No, you’re not old at all. Even we enthusiasts have hated that word. And that’s because it’s meaning has been used to convey shame and humiliation. The word has always been derogatory and demeaning. And as such, it holds too much power over women. THAT’S the reason the box has this name. To take the power it holds out of the equation. This box, and the cause associated with it, is to change the connotation of the word.
It’s to say to every person that just because I wear a short skirt or sleep with whomever I want or express my sexuality as I see fit, you don’t get to judge me. It’s my body and my life. Your silly little “slut” word means absolutely nothing. The double standard is dead. And calling me names says more about you than it does about me. The word has no more power and as such, you don’t get to shame me anymore.
As for those who say not liking the word, or the name of the box, is about having self-respect…well, quite simply, that’s the complete opposite of it’s actual significance. To say that the “slut-shaming” needs to be stopped is actually about taking back our self-respect. Changing the connotation of the word slut is about taking back our self-respect. And standing up and saying that the word no longer has any power over me is about taking back our self-respect.
I hope this makes some sort of sense. I understand that we are all different and no one person’s opinion is more important than another’s. But even for those who simply can’t come around to the “enthusiasts” way of thinking, I truly hope they can understand the rational behind it.
BTW, I submitted a response earlier to you but it’s apparently under review for some reason and hasn’t posted yet. So when you get 2 different responses from, that’s why 🙂
