KiwiCo offers boxes for different age groups: Cricket Crate is for 24-36-month-olds, Koala Crate is for 3-4-year-olds, Kiwi Crate is for 5-8-year-olds, and Doodle Crate and Tinker Crate are for 9-16+-year-olds. There really is something for every age with this company.

This review is of the $19.95 a month Koala Crate, for 3-4-year olds. Disclaimer: my son is not yet two, so I simplified some of the steps to accommodate his age (I will note anything I did to accommodate him).

Koala Crate March 2018 Review

This month’s theme was the FARM!

Koala Crate sends a magazine every month called “imagine!” It’s full of activities and stories for little ones. My son loved flipping through it, as it is both colorful and nicely illustrated.

There is also an instruction booklet included. I love the clear directions with illustrations and a step by step guide. It is very easy to follow and preview before beginning the project so you can prep everything. There were three projects this month: Vegetable Garden, Barnyard Finger Puppets, and Barn Tote.

On the back of the instructions is this guide that shows a messiness scale and the level of grown-up involvement. It also shows the skills the project works on, such as fine motor skills, exploring, or creating. I love this added information as it gives me a sense of how difficult this will be for my son. I also appreciate how the company is really thinking about these the educational aspects of these projects and what skills they can work on through these fun projects.

Project 1: Vegetable Garden

This project required very precise fine motors skills to thread the beads over the pipe cleaners.  It was a little repetitive doing that part, but decorating the box was so much fun! The stickers were very cute and my son loved them! Planting the plants at the end was easy with this cool planter box.

The end result was very colorful and looks really cute! My son LOVES gardening so he got a big kick out of his garden.

Project 2: Barnyard Finger Puppets

This project required my son to decorate the finger puppets with sticky accessory pieces, such as eyes, tales, hair, or noses. His favorite was definitely the googly eyes as they move. There were decoration ideas, or you can just choose what to do. We decided to try to recreate the ones on the directions. I was very involved with this one and we had fun. This project can range in difficulty based on whether you want the puppets to look like animals or you simply want your little one to let their imagination run wild.

My son loves finger puppets, so he was excited about the end result.

Project 3: Barn Tote

This was the least creative project but required excellent direction following skills. The way they did the dots on the cardboard made it really easy to do with the color coding. This company really does an outstanding job with the directions. I honestly never have a problem with any project because they are so clear.

The final product was super cute and my son decided to carry the finger puppet animals in his new barn. My son is pretty hard on his toys but the thickness of the cardboard means this won’t fall apart immediately.

Verdict: I enjoy everything that KiwiCo makes, and my son really loved this Koala Crate! Like KiwiCo’s other offerings, Koala Crate does require adult involvement and supervision. It varies from month to month, but some supervision is always needed.

If you want to hand your child something to keep them busy, this is not good for that. This is more about bonding with your child, crafting and learning together. It’s very well put together, and it’s a pretty amazing value at $20 a month, as thinking of these projects, getting all the supplies, and prepping them would take a VERY LONG time. I loved doing this project with my son and cannot wait for the next Koala Crate.

My daughter just got her first Koala crate today. I did a one time kit to test it out before subbing, and while I haven’t done the activities with her yet, I’m impressed. This helps me take it a step beyond the basic coloring, playdough, watercolor paint, etc that I normally let her do on her own. To me, the value is there because I wouldn’t come up with these ideas on my own, nor would I have the time to prep it. I’m looking forward to doing these with her!
