Deck of Scarlet March/April 2018 Review

This month's palette was designed by LA makeup artist Roxette Arisa. Known for her fearless and glowy looks, the palette and accompanying lip and eye pencils are inspired by the exotic blue water and shimmering sandy hues of a tropical beach getaway.

Check out Roxette's tutorial for Deck of Scarlet's Edition 07 box here.

Deck of Scarlet January 2018 - note Deck of Scarlet January 2018 - back of envelope

Each box comes with a couple cards that introduce the brand as well as a cute personalized note.

Cute! Let's get to the makeup, shall we?

The palette arrived in a protective paper sleeve that mimics that design on the palette itself. Deck of Scarlet does such a good job with their exclusively black-and-white palette designs! They're always bold, modern, and unique.

"Make waves. Turn heads. Take the plunge." is the headline on the back of the sleeve. Looks like we're going to find warm metallics, bronzy, gold tinged-highlights, and flushed pinks inside. All ingredients are listed here as well.

This palette's graphic is so striking. It reminds me a bit of Nefertiti! I love that each edition plays off of the same black and white design style so that they all feel like a cohesive collection. It's also awesome that this month's palette includes a separate opening flat for lip colors (a few don't include this feature).

Super convenient for keeping lip and eye products separate and secure - especially in your bag if you choose to bring the palette out with you.

Here is the back of the palette. The Deck of Scarlet website offers so many tips and tricks that are specific to each palette!

The makeup inside arrives with a protective plastic barrier. These shades are gorgeous, and, honestly, exactly my style! In fact, I've been on the hunt for a retro blue-leaning turquoise shadow that's exactly like Bora Bora. The remaining shades are warm and perfect for spring. And the included mirror is nice and generous for on-the-go touch-ups!

There did appear to be a bit of excess shadow around Starry Eyed, but it wasn't used - just a little messy.

This palette includes the following:

2 lip colors:

  • Smootch - Peachy nude cream
  • Swept Away - Rosy, berry-tinged nude

3 eyeshadows:

  • Starry Eyed - Warm, matte nude brown
  • Bora Bora - Shimmering turquoise
  • Bronzed - Subtly metallic bronze

2 cheek colors:

  • Roxstar - Champagne gold shimmering highlight
  • Lovesick - Bright coral flush

An eyeliner and lipliner are also included:

Long-lasting Eyeliner in Goddess - Rose gold shimmer

Long-lasting Lipliner in Foxy - Matte warm rose

Here's everything swatched. L-R (or bottom-top): Foxy lipliner, Goddess eyeliner, Smootch, Swept Away, Starry Eyed, Bora Bora, Bronzed, Roxstar, Lovesick. My skin is about an NW20 for context.

And here's my own look! Aside from tinted moisturizer, concealer, mascara, and brows, all items used are from this Deck of Scarlet palette.

I already mentioned that I'm super comfortable with warm, bronzy hues, so I was really thrilled about the selection of shades that this palette has to offer! For this look, I wanted to go pretty neutral overall, but I just could not resist trying out the beautiful blue of Bora Bora.

After applying my usual base, I started off my eye look with Starry Eyed in the crease. I love that it's such a versatile matte neutral - perfect for blending. I then applied Bora Bora all over the lid with a wet brush. Wetting this formula made the turquoise shade more vibrant and allowed me to achieve that bold, nod-to-the-60s blue eye. It's awesome that such a statement-making shade is sandwiched between two warmer neutrals in the palette. Really makes for lots of fun in playing around with different combination options! I added a bit of Bronzed to my crease and bottom lash line for some depth and finished the look with Goddess on my lower lash and water line. It's super impressive how sparkly this liner is! Really adds a beautiful twinkle, and it would look great with a neutral eye for every day as well. I've never owned anything like it. It's really nice that these shades cater to daytime with a light hand, but they easily transition to evening with slight adjustments in application approach.

Onto the rest of the face! Lovesick surprised me. It's so, so pigmented! Make sure to use it sparingly, as I had to blend it out for awhile to remove some product. The coral is so saturated that it created an amazing peachy flush. This shade was definitely a highlight for me! But onto the actual highlight: Roxstar is a wonderful champagne shimmer that would look amazing on a range of skin tones. I applied it along my cheekbones and temples as well as my cupid's bow and inner corners of my eyes.

I finished the look with Smootch on my lips. I'm usually not big on nudes, but this creamy formula was peachy and flattering. For an evening look, Swept Away would look amazing with Foxy liner.

I'm so happy with how this look turned out! The eyes are the star of the show, but the additional warm tones really complimented my coloring.

Verdict: I'm loving the quality of Deck of Scarlet's palettes and accompanying liners! This was definitely the best that I've received. Bora Bora was a perfect turquoise, and I had so much fun playing around with it! Goddess liner was another favorite. With so many shimmering hues that are ideal for warm weather, this palette is a springtime winner.

The listed value from Deck of Scarlet is $80, and I'd agree that this set is worth somewhere around that range. This box is a terrific value considering the $29.95 price tag. If you enjoy experimenting with your makeup, this box would be perfect for you. I can't wait to see what future palettes have in store!

Great review Jess! I’m not sure if these colors would work for me – I’m fair and cool toned but I’m still going to give it a try. I need more makeup about as much as another hole in my head LOL but couldn’t resist. Plus, with the first time subscriber discount the total only came to $20.95! I Justified this for when I do some sunless tanning before vacation, this would be an excellent palette to bring with me.

Btw it would be nice to see all the months laid out beside each other, inside and outside to show how they’re all different/similar.

If you click the link and go to their website, they actually have a page where all the palettes are laid out and you get to select which one you would like to be your first pallet. It was interesting to see all seven of them together.
