D.L. & Co. Candle Subscription Box Review – Spring 2018

This post may contain referral/affiliate links. If you buy something, MSA may earn a commission. Read the full disclosure.

D.L. & Co. is a candle company that recently launched two quarterly candle subscriptions. (You might have seen their candles in Box of Style and Breo Box.) This is the review of their $84.15 a season, DL Box.

The box arrives in a gorgeous reusable box with a magnetic flap lid. (The gold foil text on the lid is classy, too!)

This box was sent to us for review purposes. (Check out our review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).

The Subscription Box: D.L. & Co. Modern Alchemy Box

The Cost: $84.15 a box (Or $99 a box if you don’t want a subscription)

LIMITED TIME DEAL: Now through May 13th, use code BOX10 to save 10% off of one-time box purchases!

The Products: A collection of candles, home fragrance, and other home goods.

Ships to: U.S. only

Soleil Votive Candle – Retail Value $20

This is probably the chicest votive candle I’ve ever seen! The vessel is ceramic with metallic accents. It’s 3 ounces, with a burn time of 25 hours.

The scent is a blend of “hinoki, aloe wood, and black teas with fresh undertones of pine and cedar and a touch of smokey oakwood.” It reminds me a bit of men’s cologne.

White Silver Soleil Golden Woods Candle – Retail Value $56

This candle arrives in a fancy lidded box (everything in this box would be a great gift), and it includes a metallic ceramic lid:

It is a 9-ounce candle with a burn time of 50 hours.

The scent is a blend of green lime, patchouli, oakmoss, and hemlock and a finale of golden elemi resin.” Again, I think this scent falls into the general category of men’s cologne scents – which I really like.

Skull Snuffer – Retail Value $48

This candle snuffer is cast in brass with a gold finish. Here’s a close up of the skull:

I actually needed a candle snuffer, so this is a perfect accessory for me, and it’s one I’ll actually want to keep out on display!

Love Matches – Retail Value $7.50

Again, more accessories I’m happy to have on display instead of hidden away in a drawer!

These are longer than your typical match, too. (They measure 4 inches long.)

Historical Tin Candle – Retail Value $17.50

“Collapse into a languid, hazy cloud and submit to smoldering resins, opiates and tobacco fumes.” Huh.

This 6-ounce candle has red wax and a 35 hour burn time. The scent is interesting – I don’t mind it, but it’s my least favorite of all the scents in the box. My husband Eric said it reminded him of incense, but that’s as specific as he could get!

Honey Absolute Rare Botanic Diffuser Set – Retail Value $37

This set comes with 100 ml of fragrance, diffuser sticks, and a ceramic vessel with silver metallic accents.

The slim profile is great if you have limited counter space in a powder room or anywhere else you want to display this diffuser. The scent is sweet and floral – a nice contrast to the other fragrances in the box.

Here’s a closer look at the design:

And with this candle subscription, you can expect one or two home items that aren’t candle/fragrance related.

Pillow Cover – Retail Value $16

This pillow cover measures 18 X 18 inches, features a hidden zipper, and has a fabric composition of 60% Polyester, 30% Cotton, and 10% Viscose.

I love the idea of changing out pillow covers with the seasons to mix up the look of your rooms, but I never seem to buy the replacement covers and do it. So sending me a pillow cover in a subscription box is a perfect way to make me actually do it!

And this box also included a coupon for 35% off sitewide on D.L. & Co. (excludes sale items).

Verdict: This box has a retail value of $202! I think that’s amazing for a candle and home goods box that cost $84.15.  Everything in this box is impressive, too – the packaging and scents are all stunning, and this could be a great box to gift, or to split up into multiple gifts.

And my husband Eric and I loved all the scents (with the exception of the tin – didn’t love it, didn’t hate it). We rarely agree on preferred candle scents, so that made this box extra special!

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Yes!

Value Breakdown: At $84.15 for this box, here’s what you are paying approximately per item:

  • Votive Candle: $8.33
  • 9-ounce Candle: $23.33
  • Skull Snuffer: $20
  • Matches: $3.12
  • Tin Candle: $7.29
  • Diffuser: $15.41
  • Pillow Cover: $6.67

  1. I just checked their website and the Sparkling Embers candle only comes in 9 oz. For $45. So…… if anyone wants to sell or swap theirs, let me know! I am dying for this candle! Click on my name to get to my swap page =)

    • Kelly, your name takes you to your profile, which says “you do not have permission to view this page”. I think you need to change it to your swap page.

That being said, I need to know how to do that! LOL.

      • I just clicked on my name and it did take me right to my swap page. Maybe you can’t view it if you’re not signed up for the swap section?
And also to link your swap page to your name, or whatever website, just paste the web address in the section that says “website” after you type out your comment, right below the “name” and “email” sections.

        • If the address your using ends in “swaps” instead of “profile”, that’s why it will take someone to the “do not have permission to view” page. I am on swaps so that wouldn’t be the reason. I just put my swap link in the website line so click on my name to see if it works. Fingers crossed!
And thanks for letting me know how to do it!

  2. Oooooh goodness that soleil votive candle! That sounds like the exact description of my dream candle! If I don’t see it up for swap I’m gonna have to buy that one!

  3. I REALLY want this box!! I’m trying to decide, though, if I want this box or want to have an extra $80 for FFF add-ons…

  4. “Oh, your house smells interesting. What is that fragrance?”

“You know. Just the fumes of resin, opiates, and tobacco”.

    • Lmao! 🤣

  5. I received the Modern Alchemy palm tree box a few weeks ago and I absolutely LOVED everything. The packaging/presentation was beautiful, all of the candle scents were amazing and the journal with the palm tree was super cute and useful! I also ordered one for my mom for her birthday and she was impressed by the quality of the candles and impressed by the scents included. I highly recommend this!!

  6. Love this sub! And the Modern Alchemy one, as well. And if I don’t like any of the scents, almost everything in the box is gift-able. Or, in some cases, swap-able 🙂

I’m actually looking forward to the MA box with all of the palm leave designs. I know a lot of people are really not fans of current palm leaves trend, but I am not one of those people. I love anything that reminds me of the tropics. And beaches. And daiquiris. And oceans. Need I continue? It’s all lovely to me.

    • Yes!! I am 100% with you on the palm leave trend. That box looks gorgeous!!
