SnoozeBox March 2018 Review

SnoozeBox February 2018 box inside

This month’s box featured 5 items, primarily available from private or small sellers and on Etsy. There was no paperwork or packing slip included in this box.

My husband went to a concert, my toddler is sleeping, and it’s snowing outside – so this momma is more than ready to get to get her relaxation on!

New Moon Tea Co. "Relax and Renew" Tea

New Moon Tea Co. "Relax and Renew" TeaSmall Bag (10g) - Retail Value $4.79 USD ($6.24 CAD)

From New Moon Tea Co.:

Relax and Renew tea is an Organic herbal blend of Lavender, Lemon Balm, Chamomile and Corn Flowers. This tea is a calming blend of herbs which help relieve stress, reduce anxiety and calm the mind body and soul. Drink it any time of the day and experience the tranquility just as if you were at the yoga studio or out on a walk in nature.

Each Small Bag contains 10 g or about 12 cups of tea, and the directions are to simply steep for 5-6 minutes.

I’ve never heard of this company before, but am impressed with their website and quality of product. This company is based in Canada, and their products are small batch and hand blended. They offer some other interesting products; the maternal line of products specifically caught my eye – it is a line of teas and bath products for expecting and postpartum moms. Wouldn’t that make a great baby shower gift? But I digress…

This tea is beautiful, lightly fragrant, and delish. I’m typically a black tea kind of girl – and sometimes think herbal teas are gross – but this one hit the spot.

On a critical note, I doubt everyone has a way to make loose tea at home, so it would have been nice to include something to use to steep the tea or a tea that’s bagged already. Luckily I had a way to brew on hand!

I’m currently drinking it hot and unsweetened, but I think it would be amazing iced with a bit of honey on a lazy summer afternoon.

Vitalab Melatonin 3mg Tablets – Estimated Value $4 (value based on a similar item found here)

Vitalabs, Inc appears to be a private label supplement company based in Georgia. I couldn’t find this exact product priced anywhere, but since melatonin is a common supplement it was easy to find a comparable product.

My husband is a huge fan of melatonin, and takes it often to help him sleep. I typically stay away from it, as I find it gives me strange dreams. I think with any supplement, you need to figure out what works for you! This is a very small, safe dosage (3mg) and he is glad to have another bottle on hand.

Enchanted Slumber Sleep Balm from The Wood Sprite Shop2 oz. - Retail Value $5

The Wood Sprite Shop is an Etsy store, based in Florida, specializing in custom orders for soap, shampoos, balms, and other bath products. From Wood Sprite Shop:

Ingredients: coconut oil, grapeseed oil, beeswax, lavender and cedar wood EOs.

The calming scents of cedar wood and lavender will relax you and make you believe you're actually falling asleep in an enchanted forest. Rub this magic potion on your pulse points and Zzzzzzzz. Night night, Sleeping Beauty!

I’m a big believer in lavender essential oils to aid with sleep and often diffuse it at night in my bedroom. I love the smell of this balm, and the quality ingredients make for a silky product. I know this little tin will last quite a while and I’ll keep it on my nightstand.

SandyLand Studio Chamomile Bath Salts, 3 oz. - Retail Value $3.25

This is a handmade item made with European Spa Salt, Dead Sea Salt, Dendriti Salt, Epsom Salt, Fragrance, Chamomile Flower Oil, and Color.

SandyLand Studio is another Etsy store, based in Wisconsin, specializing in soy candles and European spa and dead sea bath salts.

I love to get baths and was excited to get to try a chamomile salt.

First, I loved that this was a white salt – and dissolved into a milky and relaxing bath (that I knew wouldn’t cause me a ton of clean up!) The smell is heavenly and relaxing – I don’t know what Chamomile smells like, to be honest, and to me this salt smells like very soft, fresh, light, and powdery. It actually takes me back to a smell from my childhood – that I can’t quite place – but is very pleasant. I can’t stop smelling it!

I used about half of this pouch in my bath – and I’d estimate that you could get anywhere from 1-4 baths from this pouch depending on how fragrant you like your water. I’ll be able to get two baths from my bag.

"Brady's Bedtime Lotion" from 3 Sisters & A Chick2 oz. - Retail Value $4

Again, 3 Sisters & A Chick is an Etsy store, based in Indiana, featuring several product lines based on essential oils. The ingredients in this lotion are Paraben-Free Lotion Base, Lavender Essential Oil, Chamomile Essential Oil. This lotion contains only 3 ingredients, so I would be comfortable trying it on my toddler. This is a lightweight, fast absorbing lotion with a spa-quality lavender smell.

The label on this bottle specially says:

Made especially for little ones – to help with a goodnight sleep… Night Night Baby, Sweet Dreams!

The Verdict: I’m very pleased with the assortment of sleep aids featured in this month’s SnoozeBox. It is my first box from this company, and I was unsure what to expect. I liked that the products featured were small batch – and many were from Etsy stores – enabling me to learn about products and vendors that I might not have stumbled across otherwise.

In an effort to sample all of these products, I started by drinking a cup of the tea and then soaked in the bath salts for about 20 minutes while listening to some music. Next, I applied a thin layer of the lotion to my skin and some of the balm to my pulse points. I’ve taken melatonin in the past and personally don’t care for it so I’m going to skip that final step. But I can tell you I feel like I spent the day at a luxury spa. I am a pretty good sleeper to start with - but sometimes have a difficult time "turning off my brain" to fall asleep. I slept really well after that whole relaxation ritual. I think the warm bath with the salts, and the soothing tea blend helped me to relax my mind and amplified my relaxation the most. The lotion and the balm were probably a bit less effective for me, but I did enjoy the scent and it certainly didn't hurt matters! I've been using the balm on my pulse points nightly, along with my essential oil diffuser and think that I've been sleeping a bit more soundly.

However, I think the value was quite low considering the price of the box. The box costs about $35, and from my estimate, I received about $21 in products. Granted, that doesn’t account for all of the shipping charges that I would have had to pay to each individual Etsy store, but I guess I’m used to getting a hero, or high priced item in a subscription box.

The Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No. Their shipping cycle is at the end of the month, so if you subscribe now your first box will arrive at the beginning of April.

Value Breakdown: The box cost $34.97, but I estimate that I received $21.04 in value. That means that I spent approximately the following on each item:

  • New Moon Tea Co. "Relax and Renew" Tea: $7.96
  • Vitalab Melatonin 3mg Tablets: $6.65
  • Enchanted Slumber Sleep Balm: $8.31
  • SandyLand Studio Chamomile Bath Salts: $5.40
  • "Brady's Bedtime Lotion" from 3 Sisters & A Chick: $6.65

I saw this on another blog and the box they received was different but still low value. I’m not impressed with their citation of tiny products for a monthly box for sleep. It’s sad too because if the value was there I’d sub right now for at least 3-6 months.

Ms Bomer

Subbing for 6 months would be $29 minus %5 (so $27 approximately) and no shipping according to their site. I’d say it’s a good deal!
