About KoKoStyle

The Products: A mix of full size and sample size items ranging from makeup, skincare, haircare, and body care.

Good to Know: This box will occasionally include skin tone specific makeup like BB creams and foundation, so when you subscribe you choose between light beige and dark beige. However, KoKoStyle acknowledges that doesn't work for everyone:

“Korean makeup can be quite limited for darker skin tones. If you use a darker foundation, please send us a message and we will put an alternative item of the same value in your box.”

KoKoStyle March 2018 Review

This box comes with an info sheet with instructions (in English!) on how to use the products

They also included this fun sheet with a few exercises to learn Hangeul, the language spoken in Korea.

Skinfood Beauty in Food Blueberry Mask

Skinfood Beauty in Food Blueberry Mask - Retail Value $2.36

Ahhh, Skinfood! This is a Korean Skincare brand I recognize, thanks to ULTA now carrying the line. I hadn't tried this particular mask before, and it checks all the boxes on a good, simple face mask. It isn't too strongly scented, the product doesn't drip down my neck while wearing it, and it doesn't irritate my skin. My face felt soft and smooth after using, and it was comfortable to wear.

Tony Moly The Chok Chok Green Tea Mask

Tony Moly The Chok Chok Green Tea Mask - Estimated Value $2 (Buy 2 masks for $4 here).

Tony Moly, aka my first introduction to K-Beauty! This is another line I am familiar with thanks to ULTA carrying it, and I think I’ve tried Tony Moly through Birchbox or Ipsy in the past as well. This mask is pictured on the info sheet but it didn't have any instructions the way the other products did. Luckily, this is a Korean skincare line that has a bountiful website in English, so I was able to see that the powerhouse ingredient in this mask is fermented green tea. Based on that knowledge I was hesitant to put it on my face (aka surrounding my nose), but luckily this mask has a light scent that doesn't smell fermented in any way. It is a bit thin, and my nails poked a hole in this mask as I was unfolding it. Not the end of the world, and I was happy with how big this mask was— it definitely reaches to my hairline and jawline. It left the tiniest bit of sticky residue after using, but that faded quickly. This mask isn't groundbreaking, but it makes for a pleasant 20 minutes.

IPKN Newest Honey Facial Mist, 100 mL

IPKN Newest Honey Facial Mist, 100 mL - Retail Value $15.11

This is the clear winner of the box— It is VERY refreshing, and the light scent reminds me of getting facials at a spa. You know the part at the end of a facial (or massage) where they spray something over you before officially ending? I never knew what that spray was, but it very well could be this lovely stuff right here. Made with Honey Complex and Coral Water, this is designed to provide hydration when your skin is feeling dry. It added hydration without leaving me feeling greasy, and the spray was a relatively fine mist. Some parts of the spray was a little heavier than others, but overall it provided an even mist. I plan on keeping this in my purse to refresh my skin on those hot Louisiana days!

Saemmul Under-eye Maker

Saemmul Under-eye Maker - Retail Value $4.65

Right off the bat, I thought this was a plain eyeliner, and I was excited to get an eyeliner that wasn't black, dark brown or dark grey. BUT, this is cooler than that! This nifty guy is an “Aegyosal” pen. Aegyosal is the Korean term for the tear bags under your eyes. Because of my Eastern European heritage, I don't have very pronounced tear bags, but I was still down to try this out because it is designed to make you look “young and angelic.” To use, you take the light brown eyeliner and line under your lower lash line (about 5 mm below, according to the directions). Then, you blend in the pencil gently. Finally, you take the sponge end that is dusted in the shimmery powder (that is stored in the lid) and apply it between the eyeliner and your lash line. Since I wear contacts I am very wary about applying any type of eye powder to my lower lash line, because if it gets in my eye and irritates it I am going to be unhappy and uncomfortable for the rest of the day. This powder didn't get into my eyes and was non-irritating— Win! You can saw it swatched below.

Skinfood White Grape Fresh Foundation in Light Beige - Retail Value $11.31

This right here is one of the main reasons I was excited to try KoKoStyle— how many other subscription boxes include foundation? I love that this box sends more than just sheet masks. When my subscription was started the “light beige” option was selected for my skin tone, and this foundation is a surprisingly good match! This was really comfortable to wear and had a light, refreshing scent— I do not know that I would call it a grape scent, but it definitely doesn't smell like your regular foundation. This is definitely a light coverage foundation, but you can build it up a bit. The grape extract is designed to keep your skin hydrated while you wear it. This wasn't able to combat the natural redness of my cheeks, but I could easily wear some concealer underneath to look fresh-faced without having heavy foundation on.

Here is a swatch of the foundation with the Aegyosal pen underneath.

Here I am wearing just the foundation and the Aegyosal pen on one eye. I wanted you to be able to see how it made a difference compared to my plain eye. I like the natural look it gives, and it definitely brightens my eye area (does it make me look angelic and young?). I am surprised by how well the foundation works with my natural coloring and I bet a good coat of mascara would make my eyes look super big. Both products are awesome additions to my makeup hoard.

Verdict: I was so excited to try a K-Beauty box that didn't focus on sheet masks exclusively, and KoKoStyle did not disappoint! I really feel like I got a box of the current popular beauty products in South Korea, and I was happy to see uncommon items like the foundation and Aegyosal pen! I think this is a very well rounded box that delivers on its promise to give 2-3 full-size items centering around current beauty trends in Korea. This box doesn't promise a certain value for the box, but I was happy to see the estimated value came in above the cost of the box (I calculated a value of $35.43).

To Wrap Up:

Can I still get this box if I sign up today? No, the next box you will receive is April's.

Value Breakdown: This box cost $29.99 and I estimated a value of $35.43. That means you are paying approximately the following for each item:

  • Skinfood mask: $2.00
  • Tony Moly mask: $1.69
  • IPKN mist: $12.79
  • Aegyosal pen: $3.94
  • Skinfood Foundation: $9.57
