TokyoTreat

TokyoTreat is a snack subscription box filled with candy and other tasty goodies from Japan. A little salty, a little sweet... all very authentic to what you'd find walking through a convenience store in Japan.

TokyoTreat December 2017 Review

TokyoTreat Box December 2017 -0004 TokyoTreat Box December 2017 -0005

I didn't receive an information booklet in my December box—just a card about the subscription box in general. I am not sure if this was just an error, but I was really bummed to not receive one. They are always super helpful in navigating each snack.

Koikeya Savory Salt Potato Chips - Estimated Value $4.94

I estimated the price above based on similar item, since I couldn't find this exact snack online. These chips were a very unique snack! The blend of sweet and salty made this so much more than a potato chip. The salt seasoning has a light sweetness with hints of sugar. Then, each chip is seasoned with mellow seaweed, which I thought I tasted a hint of but wasn't sure until I read the ingredients. This snack bag was enormous, and perfect for sharing, which was great for me, since both my husband and I couldn't seem to put this bag down!

Grape Chocobi - Retail Value $4.58

These little corn puffs are a seasonal snack that only come out in the Autumn. The grape flavor is meant to represent the autumn season in Japan, which was really fun to read about since here I think of grapes as a summer food. Each corn puff is super soft and coated in this incredible grape icing that is oh-so-sweet! The grapes add this tart fruity flavor that I couldn't get enough of. My son also loved sharing this fun box with me! As an extra fun surprise, this box had a Crayon Shin-Chan sticker inside.

Lotte Memory-Enhancing Gum - Buy a pack of 5 for $13.00 here

I thought the "Memory-Enhancing" name was just a funny title for this green gum. However, after looking into this more, it is believed that this gum will help improve your memory! The gum candy is filled with gingko biloba extract, an herb that is often found in various herbal teas. I remember my parents taking gingko when I was younger because it helps you to recall and retain. So interesting to see that they could have gotten their daily dose in a fun gum packet! The gum itself was a nice minty flavor that reminded me of ordinary gum, but we all now know that this gum is extraordinary!

Wild Strawberry Path Hard Candies - Estimated Value $3.50

I based the value above on the price of a similar product, since I couldn't find these candies online.

This is a classic Japanese candy that tastes and smells like summer! The hard candy has a wild strawberry flavor that is so sweet and delicious. The candy itself has a hard outer shell that gets sweeter as you go. I loved that they came in a resealable bag so that I could enjoy and share this fun hard candy.

Dondonyaki Kimchi Rice Cake - Estimated Value $1.99

I had to guess at this value as well, based on a similar product I found.

This was probably my favorite snack of the month because it combines so many different flavors into each little bite size cake! The rice cake is flavored with a delicious kimchi seasoning that is so salty with a light spice. You don't get a strong vegetable flavor, which was interesting, but instead, you get the yummy seasoning that goes along with kimchi. I gobbled this whole bag down!

Mini Strawberry Flavored Corn Chips - Retail Value $0.45

I have received a few of these corn chips in previous snack boxes, but have never tasted this yummy strawberry flavor! This mini bag is a new bite-sized version of the Shimi Choco Corn Japanese snack. The bag itself is perfect to enjoy on the go or at your desk, and you could finish the whole bag in minutes like I did! The corn chips have a sugar coating of strawberry flavor that is sweet and fruity.

Corn Potage Umaibo - Buy a pack of 20 for $6.93

Corn potage must be the hit Umaibo flavor for the fall and into the winter! I am not complaining though because I absolutely love the corn flavors. This Umaibo had a festive wrapper that was almost too cute to open. The corn flavor is always that perfect mix of sweet, like a sweet corn pudding, and saltiness that you would get from a chicken stock. So yummy!

Kameda Seika Happy Turn Rice Crackers - Retail Value $3.85

These were very interesting and are a bit hard to explain. First off, the packet was huge with a long line of the individual bags all attached. So you could be snacking on these for weeks, or sharing with a group of friends! The rice crackers were super thick and dense with a pretty big crunch. I got a strong sugar flavor that was very sweet, but then was hit with a saltiness. I would have to say that the overall texture and mixture of flavors weren't a win for me. I always do enjoy trying something new and thought that the packaging was so unique and fun!

Puchi Puchi Art DIY Kit - Retail Value $4.25 (Found here for $1.99)

This DIY kit was hard! You basically mix the powder into water, and then use the image template card to make the designs in the water. That water base then turns into fun, fruity candy that you can eat. I really messed mine up though, so I didn't even get to try the candy. The little water dropper was tricky to use, so I was either not getting enough of the colors or too little. Each drop seemed to spread, which made my images just turn into big globs. I'm not sure if I used too much water or just didn't have that gentle touch. The person that did the example in the YouTube video that I watched made theirs perfectly, and it looked delicious!

The Verdict: TokyoTreat is always a great box filled with unique flavors and cool packaging! I love learning about each snack and discovering the flavors that are popular in Japan, especially when the box has a seasonal theme to it. This month did fall a bit flat for me though, and I was sad to not receive the monthly booklet that helps me learn and explore each snack. While I enjoyed each snack, the flavors weren't anything too out of the ordinary, and I thought that the strawberry corn snacks were both very similar. While I didn't love this box as much as I have my past TokyoTreat boxes, I am excited to see what January has to bring!

To Wrap Up:

Can I still get this box if I sign up today? No. Sign up today you will get the January box.

Value Breakdown: This box is $14.99 a month and I received 9 total snacks in my December box. The value per item calculates out to $1.67, which is a great overall value considering most of these snacks only come in bulk packaging. Each snack also comes in a larger size bag that allows you to have tons of leftover snacks that will last, or you can always share with your family or friends!

You not getting the booklet with this box was not a mistake, they’re not including them anymore starting with this box. The descriptions can be found online now. I’m pretty bummed about it not being included anymore either, I really liked them.

Thanks so much for your post, I didn’t realize that! I have noticed a few other boxes moving in that direction as well.

I tried to sign up for the $14.99 / month snack box and it wasn’t an option. It only has the regular and premium options now. Bummer!
