November 2017 Quirky Crate "Treat Yo Self" Review

I've been reading the reviews of this box month after month and have been dying to check it out for myself! Let's see what's inside:

info card for the quirky crate november 2017 box

Silly animal-shaped things? Cute colors? Playful patterns? Yes, please! I may be 30 on paper, but my inner child is squealing over the goodies in this subscription.

a card highlighting the artist valfre

This month's featured artist is Valfré. Heck YES!!! I love this gal's irreverent designs—they're SUPER popular online, and I've been mulling over buying one of her products from her shop. Now I have one in this box!

a white mug shaped like a cat's head, complete with black whiskers, nose, and eyes, sitting on top of its box the front of a white mug that looks like a cat's head with a black cat face on it a white mug that looks like a cat's head the back of a white mug that looks like a cat's head

Kitty Cat Mug - Listed Value $12.00

Eeee! Anything cat-themed is usually a win for me, and that's definitely true with this mug. Shaped like a cats head (complete with ears and a little painted-on face), this mug is going to make my morning (and afternoon... and early evening...) coffee a lot more fun. It's ceramic, though I'm not sure if it's A-OK for the dishwasher or not. I might handwash it for now, just in case.

a pale pink beanie hat featuring a turquoise whale embroidered on it with its tag the back of a pale pink beanie hat the front of a pale pink beanie hat with a turquoise blue cartoon whale embroidered on the front

Kawaii Whale Hat - Listed Value $14.00

So, when I was in second grade, I was obsessed with whales. Like, made a poster featuring drawings of every type of whale and somehow coerced my teacher into hanging it in our classroom. I had whale folders, whale t-shirts, whale stuffed animals, and even one of those spinning kinetic decor thingies that were popular in the '90s that featured two iridescent blue dolphins jumping in circles. (Dolphins are related to whales, you see.)

I've not indulged my whale love in quite awhile, but this hat made me cheer as soon as I saw it. This is a pretty cartoonish little design, of course, but if I had to guess, I'd say this was a turquoise-blue interpretation of a sperm whale (Don't laugh! That's the name of the species!) with a little white spout. The spout looks more like a propeller to me, just based on how it's stitched, but that's no sweat. I'm wearing this soft, stretchy hat everywhere this winter!

white socks with black letters in their packaging white socks with black letters and steve zissou-style polar bears on the ankles white crew socks with random black letters and embroidered steve zissou-like polar bears embroidered on the ankles

Benjamin Bear Socks - Listed Value $8.00

Does Benjamin Bear know Paddington Bear? They seem like they have a similar sartorial vibe. Benjamin also looks like he could recommend a really good music venue. He probably has his own DJ night.

Aaaanyway, while I'm not busy writing my own Benjamin Bear fanfic, I'll be wearing these comfy crew socks around with low-top booties or sneakers. I might even sneak them under some chunky heels and give that trend a try. In addition to having embroidered bears and the black letters of the name "BENJAMIN" knit into them, these socks are pretty comfortable and have a nice amount of stretch. I like that the letters are a bit scattered so that I won't have people trying to read my feet all day!

a patch shaped like a blue moon with a yellow ring around it on a package that says "Space Case" small blue embroidered patch that looks like a moon with a ring around it

Space Case Patch - Listed Value $4.00

Not only is this patch a planet, which scores automatic cool points from me, but it has great colors that'll really pop against the jacket I'm intending to put it on. The planet part is about 1.5 inches wide, and the width at the ring is about 2 inches. In other words, it's a nice smaller-sized patch. I could see putting this above a pocket, almost like where a logo would go on a shirt, or put it on the upper arm of a jacket like a badge.

a pink foundation brush with a sparkly handle that looks like a fish tail a pink foundation brush with a sparkly handle that looks like a mermaid's tail

Mermaid Foundation Brush - Listed Value $5.00

Oh my goodness, look what we have here. I've gotta admit, I'm not totally onboard with the whole mermaid trend. (So, whales yes, mermaids no, if you're keeping track of how I score aquatic creatures.) I do, however, like how wide and soft this makeup brush is, and the pure joy of playing with something this frivolous and glittery is honestly really fun. The width of the sparkly handle offers a good deal of control, too. I still wish it wasn't shaped like a fish tail, but I'll take it!

4 sheets of emoji-shaped stickers in their packaging four sheets of emoji-shaped stickers laid out flat

Emoji Stickers - Listed Value $5.00

I love stickers, and I love emoji. So these four sheets of emoji-shaped stickers (the stickers are each just under an inch big, by the way), are right up my alley. I can totally see using them to seal greeting cards, decorate my planner, and to stick on friends' shirts to brighten their days. In other words...

😍💌💖📓🙆📬✌️💯😺

a yellow pen with black ink and a blushing emoji topper the blushing emoji cap on a yellow pen with black ink a note written in the black ink of a fine-pointed yellow pen with a blushing emoji on top

Emoji Pen - Listed Value $2.00

And should I choose to use my emoji stickers to decorate a note to a friend, it's only fitting that I'd use a pen that fits the theme! This yellow pen has black ink and a fine point that has a nice scratch to it as it writes. It also has a rubbery blushing emoji face at the top. With a little wriggling, I did get the rubbery topper off of the pen. I'm not entirely sure if it was ever supposed to come off, but... now it does. Haha! I just ended up putting it right back on the pen, though. A yellow pen is... fine. But c'mon. We all know the emoji face is what gives this pen it's personality.

a bright pink "you're so fetch" greeting card the back of a greeting card with a Mean Girls theme

You're So Fetch Greeting Card by Ohh Deer - Listed Value $3.50

Yaaaas Mean Girls reference! I like that in this season of holiday-themed subscription box surprises, Quirky Crate has come forward with a regular old, run-of-the-mill, just-wanted-to-say-hi greeting that could work for any holiday (or regular day) all year 'round. Don't get me wrong, I love the holidays (Vince Guaraldi is on regular rotation starting in, like, August), but even I can get a little tired of all the red and green and snowflakes and pine trees and... you get it. Especially when it comes to greeting cards. Sometimes I like giving cards that match the personality of the person I'm giving them to, not just the season that I'm giving them during. Y'know? So this card (made by the amazing Ohh Deer) is a refreshing sight to see. The design is almost Broad City-ish, too, don't you think? I can't wait to write my own holiday wishes in this blank card and give it to a very deserving pal. Or, I could always wait and keep it for a birthday or other occasion. This cool card is never out of season!

an oversized blue triceratops-shaped eraser in its clear package an oversized bright blue triceratops eraser an oversized blue triceratops eraser from the back the head of a bright blue oversized eraser shaped like a triceratops

Ooly Triceratops Eraser - Retail Value $2.99, Listed Value $3.00

Oh hello, little guy! This dino is more like a little friend for my desk than an eraser I'm likely to use, just because it's so big! A lot of it is tail but this eraser is actually 6 inches long! As fun as it is to have a giant dinosaur-shaped eraser, I think it's even more fun to have a giant BLUE dinosaur-shaped eraser. The color is really bright and fun. It almost gives it a modern-art vibe, too—I think he (I've decided it's a "he") will add a nice pop of personality to the pens-and-pencils corner of my desk.

a white milk carton shaped enamel pin that says "100% boys tears" in pink on it in its pink valfre packaging a milk-carton-shaped enamel pin that's white and says "100% boys tears" on it

Valfré 100% Boys Tears Milk Carton Enamel Pin - Retail Value $12.00

I'm not the type to try and make anyone of any gender teary-eyed. But oh, what a perfect pin for all the femme fatale types out there! I love the contrast of the devil-may-care sentiment and the cutesy design and colors. I've seen this design as a phone case before and loved it. It's much more me to have it as a (1.25 inch) enamel pin for days when I feel like embracing my bad gal side.

Verdict: I. Love. Quirky Crate. SOOOOO much! The folks who curate this box seem like they have a really good handle on what's cool—not just what's cute. I feel like the mermaid makeup brush and mayyyyybe the patch were the only things that felt a little on the juvenile side for me. (Not that there's anything wrong with that—I'm telling you, I'm going to end up using that brush, fishtail or no fishtail.) Was anything super sophisticated? Eh, not really. But the vibe was fun, frivolous, and playful, almost like opening a big gift bag of birthday presents from a best friend. I love it. I can't wait to see what next month holds!

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No. But order by December 13th to get the December box (shipping 12/15)!

Value Breakdown: This box cost $40.94 (price + US shipping), but going by the listed values of the items inside, I received $68.49 worth of products. That means, proportionally, I paid about the following for each item:

  • Cat mug - $7.17
  • Whale hat - $8.37
  • Benjamin bear socks - $4.78
  • Planet patch - $2.39
  • Mermaid brush - $2.99
  • Emoji stickers - $2.99
  • Emoji pen - $1.20
  • Ohh Deer card - $2.09

What a great review. Even if I hadn’t liked the box (I did!) the review was a fun read in itself.
And now I wish I wasn’t too late to buy this box. I’d give my right arm for that whale beanie! Although, I’m left-handed. lolz
