This month's box is about smoke as a culinary delight!

Now, on to the items!

Breville The Smoking Gun - Value $99.95

This is the main event in the box, and it's one of those items I would never have thought to buy myself, but turns out it is really fun!

The kit includes a battery operated smoker. (Batteries were included as well.)

And it comes with two flavors of wood chips:

You just put the wood chips of your choice in the chamber of the top of the smoking gun:

(Thanks to Marne and her fabulous nails for being the hand model in these photos!)

Make sure to set up what you want to smoke with a lid/plastic wrap before lighting a match to burn the wood. Then...

Voila!

Again, make sure to put the hose in a covered bowl of food with a lid/plastic wrap - our office smelled like smoke for a bit thanks to this picture! 🙂

Robb Vices included some smoking recipe ideas, too:

When I first saw this smoker I was thinking of traditional uses like on meat dishes. But popcorn? Cocktails? These things are much more my style!

Next up, Robb Vices included everything you need to make a smoked hot chocolate copmlete with bourbon marshmallows and drizzled goat milk caramel!

Fat Toad Farm Caramel - Value $14

This caramel is made with just goat's milk, pure cane sugar, and baking soda.

It's super drizly, and was a hit with everyone who tried it.

Wondermade Bourbon Marshmallows - Value $8

Another simple-ingredient item - and ingredient #2 on the list is Maker's Mark!

I've sampled Wondermade marshmallows before and I love them!

The bourbon taste is there, but not overpowering. (I think this is how I like my buorbon - with a ton of sugar!)

And you can combine the marshmallows and caramel with hot chocolate:

Ticket Chocolate Hot Chocolate on a Stick (2) - Value $9

You get one of each flavor: Belgian Milk and French Truffle.

If you aren't familiar with hot chocolate on a stick, you just swirl it in steamed milk, and it's good to go in a minute or two!

Verdict: This box has a value of about $131. I think the box is unique and delivered on providing me with new experiences and high-end delicious brands. (I never would have tried smoking food without this box!) But, I'm used to a higher value from Robb Vices, so while this isn't bad for a $97.90 box, it's lower than the norm.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, typically once a box has shipped, it is no longer available. I believe if you sign up now, your first box will be the November box.

Coupon Use code MSAVICELOVE to receive a bonus gift when you sign up for a 6- or 12-month subscription!

Value Breakdown: At $97.90 for this box, here’s what you are paying approximately per item:

  • Smoker: $74.73
  • Caramel: $10.46
  • Marshmallows: $5.98
  • Hot Chocolate Sticks: $6.73

Let’s be honest. How many people have taken the smoker out of its box? How many will? How many will re-gift it at the earliest possible moment?

Also, as an on and off RV subscriber (depending on finances) who signs up with bonus box codes, RV will still send your bonus box even after you’ve cancelled, so if you are unhappy you don’t need to feel compelled to stay subscribed. Also, their Facebook message customer service team is great.

Would desperately love to get my hands on one of the smokers

I got the deal in September where you got an extra box with one box purchased. I bought them for my husband as a birthday gift thinking he would get some interesting things for his bar. Our ‘bonus box’ was August’s box with the sauces and sunglasses. The sunglasses were a total loss for us so the box value was very low with just 3 sauces. I had high hopes for the October box (the one I paid for) but it was a disappointment too. We liked everything the box (especially the smoke gun) but were left feeling like something was missing from the box. There should have been one more item included in the box to make it complete.

This box is not that impressive for the price. I wouldn’t be excited to get this. I’ve been watching this box and thought about subbing if they have a good BF deal, but I’m not sure now as it seems to be going downhill.

I want my extra box from the Gilt deal. I put my order in at the end of Aug because I knew that most who got the deal would put theirs in all who knows so I waited to put in after the 25th. I do get a subscription so Im just waiting and I emailed them a month ago about it in hopes to at least see for my bday and they didn’t have any idea. Why have the deal. I didn’t sign up to get a box and then get another 3 or 4 months later. This would of been a great gift for many I n my list if they do it again but I will never ever do it now. I’m supposed to remind CSA if I don’t have it by November. Yes remind them. I truly love this box and don’t want to be mean but they should of said that on the gilt site. Am I wrong to feel strange about this?

I’m not happy about it, either!!

Not at all. I signed up with the MSA bonus code in July (August was the first box) and have still not received a bonus. CS stated in the next few months but that just seems odd, why does it need to come months later?

LB,

I feel the same way. I joined in August under Gilt promo as well. I have been so disappointed in their curation choices, that I have contacted them twice about the complimentary box purchased with the promo, so I can cancel. The box is beautifully presented and packaged, but these are simply not items my husband and I will use.

The first time I contacted them, they responded “their intention was to not send the gift box for several months after joining”.

Their second response is as follows:

Thank you for reaching out. All of our complimentary boxes and bonus items ship separately from the monthly box shipments. The Gilt City promotion has not shipped for any of our members yet. We are working on shipping them out now that the October boxes have shipped. If you have not received it by mid-November, let us know and we will see where you are in the shipping queue! Once it ships, you will receive a tracking number.

I’m confident, most of us who joined with this promo, did so expecting to receive the gift box with, or soon after, the first shipment. Certainly not several months later. Hopefully, they will send them out now, especially with more customers contacting them and voicing their frustration. Fingers crossed!

Happy Halloween tomorrow all!!

I got my bonus for a 6 month commitment after the 6th box….

Taren

Sounds like that’s how they stop people from canceling! They want their money outa you! Lol a page right outa Glossybox’s book! I’d be irritated as well.

Although the items are thoughtfully created…. the past couple months have been very low value and just not the “wow” of prior months. At this price point – other subs are delivering 3x or more the retail value. I’m in a six month subscription with RV now and will not renew.

This box really hit it out of the park for me, despite the lower RV. I’d rather have a lower RV with things I’m actually going to use all the time (the smoker), rather than a higher retail value with things I would use less often (the sunglasses from two months ago) or never (the pen and notebook from last month). I also like a non-consumable item occasionally over a consumable one, although high-end alcohol is still a fun treat.

Received this as my first Robb Vices box: Huge disappointment, especially after reading about their great boxes in the past. I will never use this smoker and the overall value here is terrible.

My husband and I have been getting this box since June. The June box was the best, at least for us, and after they’ve been just average. This month is certainly the most disappointing but we aren’t major foodies so it’s probably ok for people who enjoy that sort of thing. This smoker will likely get shoved in the back of the cabinet with the egg cooker, immersion blender and all other rarely used small appliances. We’re going to hold out another month or two to see if things improve. I really hope so because I love the concept of this box. I hope they include some really great champagne for the holidays!!

I just realized I can make the most delicious candy apples 🍎 with that caramel!

I love this sub. Got it for my fiancé for his birthday in April and he decided to subscribe. I don’t know which one of us loves it more.

It’s true (for us) that you get something you don’t need, or weren’t aware of, but you are thrilled to discover.

I have been very disappointed the last 2 months. I saw so many fabulous boxes before subbing, but they have just been very expensive duds for me and my hubby so far. One more box and we’re done.

nelliebelle1197

Yeah, I feel like my sub starting in August was the downfall of RV!

Sammee

It’s weird – I had the same feeling when I subbed a year ago last October. Like maybe I jinxed it or something. There have been a couple of great boxes since then, but I feel that their first year was their golden age. That said, I’m no longer subbed and I’m sure that sooner or later they’ll come out with a box I’ll kick myself for months for not getting. I hope RV comes through with a great box for you soon!

Connie

I was very happy to get the smoker as I have been wanting one for awhile. Not one of their higher value boxes but one of my favorites.

The forum folks are awesome — so many cool ideas of what to do with a smoker. It makes me want to get one!

Jeanette

Is the smoker, when not using the chips, could also be used to finalize a creme brulee? Or is this a different type of device?

Reply ButtonReply

Beka

Different type of device. You’re thinking of a chefs torch 🙂

Wow, this is awesome. This sub is #1 on my wishlist
