Beautiful but I’ll have to pass. With great reluctance and sadness.

Kathy

But wouldn’t you have to pay resort fees and taxes anyway if you booked at a resort?

Reply ButtonReply

Liddy

Of course you would but some people take the word free literally and assume it to mean they can leave their wallet at home and just show up.

Tat

thank you for getting on your SOAPBOX. These things are always shady. Can’t think why a luxury box with a good rep would promote this stuff.

ME

I bought it last time because I really liked the watch & that was worth the value. The travel certificate actually makes me very disappointed in this company – the sad reality is that it’s a gimmick to lure people in and pretty deceptive (read Rie’s comments).

I hate cruises and since we spend most of the year in Florida I have no interest in a vacation to the Caribbean. The cuff and watch are not my style at all, so it’s still a pass for me.
I’m still waiting for my travel box. No way would I give more $$ to Luxor until i can determine if the travel certificate in that box is worth anything. I won’t stay at 3 star properties, ever, so I am hoping the airfare will at least be worth it since the hotel is a bust for me.

Use caution/research with these certificates and do not give your money to the voucher travel company upfront without completing your research.

It is best to get the information from that voucher company about all their fees (and check on resort fees/port fees so you don’t have a surprise when you check in, get them in writing is best) and then contact the various hotel/cruise companies directly to compare their rates.

That’s the only way to know if you are getting a deal, and of protecting yourself.

A 3 night cruise to Nassau on one of those lines isn’t worth the fees you would pay to go on it.

nana

And there is the rub. Taxes and fees can amount to up to 50% of the cost of a cruise.

As for hotels, many of them have moved into making their prices seem artificially low by charging a “resort fee” of up to $100.

So yeah, these are the sort of trips that don’t really give you any value.

I am a gambler, so I bought one! It’s always better to think on the positive side that this will be a great thing! 🙂

Reply ButtonReply

Jill

Oh gosh, I’m tempted. I bought the travel box, so I could give the cruise away as a wedding gift to my good friend!

Reply ButtonReply

Liddy

I don’t think that would be a good gift at all.

Reply ButtonReply

Jill

The friend and her future husband have airline benefits, so it’s not too bad for their honeymoon. That is, if I bought the box…which I don’t plan on doing so (I have no interest in the watch or cuff)

Allison

Are you sure the vouchers are transferrable?

Jill

“Certificate is valid for 2 years and fully transferable prior to registration.”

Anastasiya

Just bought one :))))

I hope people think hard before running to purchase this box for the travel vouchers.
If you only consider the 7 day resort getaway, you can already guesstimate the MINIMUM out of pocket:

“Some fees apply. $40 per couple, per night, and a refundable deposit of $50 per person plus any locally required taxes/fees.”

So, 7 nights x $40 per night= $280
Add in an average 20% hotel regional tax (depending on where you go, I’ve seen this tax range from 15%-22%) and that 20% won’t be on the $40 per night, but on the amount that hotel “charges” regularly on a room, so if your room is considered to be $120/night, add 7 x $24= $168

$280+ $168+ $50 (refundable deposit so they say)= $498 out of pocket before you even deal with any other hidden fees.

I know this is just a hypothetical calculation, since we don’t actually know the price per night, but for those that seem to want this the most, it’s most likely due to not being able to afford going on vacation. So essentially, wouldn’t you be better off spending the $345 (cost of box) plus the extra hidden fees on the resort of your choice and know all your costs upfront? I’m certain the cruise voucher will also hold some unhappy surprises as well.

Return to regular programming/stepping off my soapbox!

Michelle

$498 is still a huge discount for a week stay at a resort.

Reply ButtonReply

Donna

It would be a good deal if we knew the nightly rates are the same as the regular rates charged by the resort. Who’s to say the travel voucher company won’t inflate the nightly rates to several times the regular rate so you have to pay more in taxes and fees? Plus there are all sorts of other hidden fees they can put into this deal so that you end up paying close to the sticker price or even more than the sticker price. That’s what these companies do, it’s how they stay in business.

Cat

That’s in addition to the $345 cost of the box itself and if the resort doesn’t charge any additional fees except tax ( which wasn’t made clear in the rules, since they used both terms “fees/taxes”).

Julie

Thanks for your explanation because I thought that $40 was for the upgrade. Definitely to risky for me.

Reply ButtonReply

Cat

I’m glad if it helps anyone make a more informed decision 🙂

Sherry

This is EXACTLY why I didn’t jump on it!! Hidden fees plus ‘optional upgrades’ equals I’d be better off booking exactly what and where I’d want in the first place (and I’d never do 7 days at a resort anyway – they lose the luster after a few).

Jenny

Sounds too good to be true and that makes me highly skeptical

Here are the details that Luxor listed so far, I bought two because it states you have 2 years to use them. 😉 It does mention it is not a timeshare, I have used similar vouchers in the past and not had any issues. I cannot vouch for these as I do not know the company being used but figure its a gamble worth taking for the price of the box. Also note there are always fees associated but they never amount to the actual cost.

Is there more details about the bonus certificate? I don’t like the box at all but could definitely use the gift certificate.
Is this the same secret company they featured at the last Travel box?

Reply ButtonReply

Connie

I feel like they have given away travel vouchers before. Has anyone out there used them? I would like to know if they were happy with their experience and how many hidden charges there might have been.

Reply ButtonReply

CaliforniaJanet

Connie, I have not received a travel voucher from a Luxor box, but a couple years ago I received what seems like almost the exact same cruise voucher (same locations/details sound the same) through a promotion. I ended up not using the voucher and just letting it go to waste, because after all the taxes and hidden fees, it turned out I could actually buy the cruise on a discount website for significantly LESS than the “free” cruise from the voucher was going to cost me! I am definitely vary wary of these types of promotions now.

They havent been sent yet, they come this month.

If like to know too. While I’m not interested in the products, I am curious about the travel.

Jennifer

They roped me in….def sounds too good to be true…Hate the spoilers but literally I couldn’t not do it

I pretty sure these come with strings. Companies can pay a few bucks a month to access unlimited free travel certificates like this to increase sales. They are advertised all over the internet.

There will be hidden fees, must book less than 60 days before so there are only scraps available and you have to change rooms midweek, any upgrades or changes are charged at an incredibly enormous rate, etc. Taxes and fees on a cruise alone are hundreds of dollars, so these vacations are far from free.

Not worth it to me, but that’s just me. I can rent a week from an owner for the same price as the fees. RCI extra vacations are this price or cheaper. Anyone can create an online account to access those for a small fee.

Reply ButtonReply

Susan

You are correct. All one has to do is google travel certificates/vouchers and you get page after page of vendors that sell these to companies as a marketing tool. Some of these only cost $100 for a year and the company can print out however many they want. There is no way an individual is going to receive hundreds of dollars in discounts when the coupon cost Luxor less than $1 per box to print.

Reply ButtonReply

Cat

Wow, that’s horrible. Basically, they are roping people in to buy an expensive box, and most people aren’t even buying it mainly for the items in the box, but these so-called travel deals! I consider these coupons the same as the ones I get in my mail box: headed for the trash.

Erin617

I’m getting this box AND the travel box. I’m sure I’ll be swapping a couple travel certificates. My concern is about the ‘industry taxes and fees’.

Reply ButtonReply

Brittany

How is this possible & not a scam??? I am so paranoid..

Reply ButtonReply

lia

Could it be one of those timeshare vacation presentations where you’re supposed to sit through a 3 hour presentation? Either way I am so tempted as I have never been on a cruise.

Reply ButtonReply

Jewels

No black-out dates and no time-share. Is stated in the rules.

TK

Does this mean that on the 7 day voucher you are paying $280 + a $50 deposit + whatever the taxes would be on the whole trip?

Reply ButtonReply

AH

I took it to mean $280 per person – so double that for 2 people plus the deposit. Plus any other fees they can sneak in there.

Reply ButtonReply

Liz

Oh my goodness!! This almost sounds to good to be true! 😊
