The box came with this information card, which basically directs you to their website. I have to admit, I liked the old brochures more – you could instantly tell which snacks were vegan, gluten-free, etc. Now you have to read the tiny print of the ingredients lists, instead…Anyway, there are also usually some coupons and/or product literature.
This month, like last month, there were also deals for Hello Fresh and Book of the Month.
Skinny Dipped Almonds in Dark Chocolate Cocoa (0.46 oz) – Buy 5m 3.5 oz pouches for $30
You don’t see these out of the package because they melted and fused into one big chunk (they were still kind of melty when I took the photos). I guess October would normally be OK for sending chocolate to more parts of the country than, say, July, but it has been unseasonably hot here (temperatures in the 80s). These were basically just chocolate-dipped almonds and I did enjoy them, though they didn’t look very pretty once the chocolate re-solidified.
Nature’s Bandits in Blueberry (1 oz) – Buy 16 bags for $19.99
These were fruit strips or fruit leather or something along those lines (never really sure what to call things like this). Definitely kid food (you will usually get some kid food with this subscription). The blueberry flavor was VERY strong. I liked it, but I can see how some people might find it cloying.
Brownie Brittle in Dark Chocolate Sea Salt (1 oz) – Buy 12, 5 oz bags for $44.99
Brownie Brittle is a Love with Food standby. This actually survived the trip relatively intact. I think my personal favorite is the kind with the caramel, although you can’t really go wrong with chocolate either. (I maintain that the edges of brownies that get all crispy in the oven are NOT the best part – no, the best part is the gooey, practically uncooked center.)
Door County Kettle Chips in Jalapeno (1.75 oz x 2) – Buy a 6 oz. bag for $3.50
I love potato chips. I lost weight last year and have successfully kept it off by counting calories, so I don’t get to eat chips too often (these were 250 calories per bag!). When I do, they are especially delicious. I loved the flavoring here (it was spicy and salty) although I did find it coating my fingers after finishing.
Halfpops in Butter and Sea Salt (0.75 oz) – Buy a 1.4 oz. bag for $1.29
You know, I actually liked these better than I thought I would. I am not the biggest fan of popcorn shells (you know, they get stuck in my teeth all the time), but somehow these managed to not be very hard (that was my other worry) and not to get in my teeth. I’d be interested in trying these in other flavors.
Country Archer Turkey Jerky (1.5 oz) – Buy a 2.75 oz. bag for $6
As you may know, I am a vegetarian. My husband isn’t, but he’s not a jerky fan. I took this to work and left it on the “free snacks” table so I guess it was a highly desired item, though I don’t know who took it so I couldn’t ask any follow-up questions about the product. This is a good time to remind readers that Love with Food does not promise to be vegetarian (most of the snacks usually are vegetarian-safe, while fewer are vegan-safe).
Kashi Chocolate Almond Sea Salt Chewy Granola Bar (1.2 oz) – Buy 6 bars for $2.99
Kashi bars have been showing up in Love with Food fairly often. This was a little melty (see above note regarding temperatures) but that didn’t strongly affect the flavor. The almond part of this was less noticeable, whereas the oats were pretty obvious. (I don’t know if this is exactly the same item linked to, but all the Kashi bars at Target.com were the same price.)
Darrell Lea Australian Soft Eating Liquorice (2 count) – Buy 8, 7 oz. bags for $14.14
Um. If this is “soft eating” licorice, “hard” licorice must be difficult to cut even with diamonds. My husband said the texture of this reminded him of hot melt adhesive (i.e., the sticks you put in glue guns). It tasted all right but was REALLY hard to chew.
Nogii Protein D’Lites Dark Chocolate and Sea Salt Caramel (1 oz) – Buy a Bag of 18 for $22.50
These are gluten-free (everything from the Nogii brand is) but actually pretty tasty (chocolate and caramel is an excellent combination, as far as I am concerned) and the texture is also nice. It reminds me a bit of a Rice Krispie treat (there are little protein crisps in here). This chocolate also kind of melted and resolidified.
Thinkthin Protein and Fiber Hot Oatmeal in Madagascar Vanilla, Almonds, and Pecans (1.76 oz) – Value $2.39
Thinthin Protein and Fiber Hot Oatmeal in Honey Peanut Butter (1.76 oz) – Value $2.39
I ate the one on the left and my husband ate the one on the right. The cups are an excessive size for the amount of product in there, and the fill line is only about halfway up. I found this to be better if you pour hot water in (instead of microwaving) and also if you add water slowly with stirring, not necessarily up to the fill line. I think I’d like to see a version of this with less sugar as oats and vanilla are already pretty sweet, but my husband didn’t make the same statement about the one he had. These are a bit high in calories at 190 and 200, respectively, for instant oatmeal for me to buy again.
Smashmallow Cinnamon Churro (1.1 oz) – Buy a 4.5 oz. bag for $4
This made me sad. Marshmallows are NOT vegetarian. (This one did have kosher gelatin.) And it smelled really, really good. My husband was the guinea pig here and he says I would’ve loved these if I could’ve eaten them. I am trying to figure out now how to make something similar with Dandies.
Unreal Dark Chocolate Almond Butter Cup (0.53 oz) – Buy 6, 3.2 oz. bags for $29.99
You don’t see this one out of the package because it, too, melted. This was actually probably the worst case of melting in the entire box. We scraped it out of the wrapper and divided it in half and my husband and I both ate a bit of it. My usual preference is for milk chocolate peanut butter cups, but this was surprisingly good considering my Reese’s-adjusted sweet tooth.
Verdict: There were 14 items in the October 2017 Love with Food Deluxe Box, which works out to about $1.43 per item. (I am counting the licorice as one item since it is so small, but the oatmeal and bags of potato chips as separate items.) That is definitely a reasonable value for the oatmeal (I saw it at Whole Foods today going for more than that), the jerky, and the chips if you are purchasing individual bags, though it seems a bit steep for some of the other items (especially considering the small size of the Nogii bar and the exactly 7 almonds in the almond package). I felt like this was a decent mixture of item types, with some savory and some sweet, but I was disappointed to receive FOUR chocolate items that were melted. (Last time I got melted chocolate, I complained to customer service and they gave me 500 points.)
Also, please note that Love with Food has changed the rewards points a bit, so there are many fewer items to choose from, and a large portion of what was there in the Rewards Pantry when I visited was either out of stock or a gluten-free baking mix, which I have no interest in. I believe you have to pay shipping for items you redeem from the shop, too, although I can’t test that right now because I haven’t done reviews for approximately six months so I don’t have any points to redeem. Ever since they put a ton of animated GIFs in their review forms I don’t have the patience to scroll through all of that stuff.
What do you think of the October 2017 Love with Food Deluxe Box? What’s your favorite snack subscription?
