Lillypost September 2017 Kid's Book Subscription Box

Lillypost sent a special custom print this month to commemorate their first birthday.

The print features their mascot the fox. He’s reading next to a stack of books and the bird on the branch above the fox’s head is wearing a party hat.

Mother Goose’s Pajama Party by Danna Smith - retail price $17.99 (out of print)

This was a fun twist on Mother Goose’s old rhymes. The text used many of the characters from beloved Mother Goose originals and the artwork was bright and cheery. The story was entirely written in prose and had a great beat which just begged to be read aloud. I especially liked that at the end of the book all the original Mother Goose poems were included so children not familiar with them could learn those as well.

Love Monster and the Last Chocolate by Rachel Bright - $10.43 on Amazon (retail price $17.99)

My kids loved this book featuring Love Monster. When he gets back home from vacation he sees a box of chocolates has been left on his doorstep. He initially thinks about sharing it with his friends but then fears there might not be enough. I liked the message in this story about sharing, generosity, and following your heart to do what is right. This was a big hit in our house!

Little Wing Learns to Fly by Calista Brill - $11.76 on Amazon (retail price $17.99)

Little Wing is a dragon and he desperately wants to fly on his own and have some independence. But when he ignores his mother’s rules and gets lost he realizes the rules are there to keep him safe. The story had a happy ending as his mother finds him, but the story felt a bit too preachy.

Bugs by the Numbers by Sharon Werner - Value $19.99

I’ve never seen a nonfiction book done in quite such an artistic manner. The book is filled with bug facts all related to numbers. There are huge fold-out spreads and the design is modern. This is more of a perusing book for random trivia than a read page to page type book, but my son loved poring over it. Each time we pick it up we find some new interesting fact by which to be amazed. I think this nonfiction book was a great selection this month.

Verdict: The value this month was over $60 (using Amazon’s prices) which I’m thrilled with and is more than double the cost of the box ($26 a month with free shipping)! The books are always well curated, beautifully wrapped and represent a variety of topics, authors, and illustrators. Our favorites this month were Love Monster and Bugs by the Numbers. This is my favorite children’s book subscription of all the ones I have had the pleasure to review and I highly recommend it.
