This month’s country is the United Kingdom!
TopMunch includes a lengthy booklet with details about the box contents, but also about the country and its culture. I’ve never been to the UK, so this is awesome to have as a reference.
This month, TopMunch is introducing three new initiatives to enhance the cultural experience of this box: TopPhrase, TopMusic, and Top-Travel. The TopMusic section aims to provide music from the featured country and region. I like the traditional jig and pipes, along with the beloved Beatles.
The TopPhrase section is the best! I hope all of this month’s grub is blinding 🙂
I also appreciate the TopTravel recommendations for a future trip. But for now, let’s dig into the snacks!
Jacobs Jaffa Cakes, 147 g – Value $4.50
The first snack I immediately dove into are these UK-made layered cookies. The layers include a spongy, but firm cake, orange jelly center, and topped with a thin layer of chocolate. These are excellent and I immediately wanted to eat a second as soon as the first was finished. I also found the resealable packaging to work really well.
It’s a bit hard to differentiate the orange center from the chocolate when looking at the cookie but believe me, it’s there! The flavor is apparent and the three components to this cookie are perfect. TopMunch fun fact: this product was ranked best selling cake or biscuit in 2012 for all of the United Kingdom!
McVities Crawford Garibaldi, 100g – Value $3.31 (buy a 3-pack for $9.92)
This next snack is another biscuit/fruit combination and British favorite. The biscuit reminds me of a saltine cracker – both in look and taste. It’s not as crumbly, but it’s a tad bland. The currant middle layer saves this for me, though. Overall, it’s a bit dry but I agree with TopMunch that they are great paired with tea.
Tayto Cheese & Onion Chips, 37g – Value $1.14 (buy 24, 25g bags for $18.49)
These chips are tasty and an Irish favorite! They are made with 100% sunflower oil and tastes more kettle-cooked. The onion flavor is stronger than the cheese, but overall this chip is really good and full of crunch.
Tayto Hot & Spicy Mighty Munch, 32g – Value $1.17 (buy 22, 26g bags for $20.95)
This month’s second crunch snack is also from Ireland-made Tayto. Each corn snack is shaped like a monster’s paw and is like a cross between a Cheeto and a Funyun. The snack’s flavor is not quite cheesy although orange in color, but more like sriracha or spicy ketchup. There’s the right amount of heat that dissipates pretty fast unless you each a bunch at once. So beware if you don’t like spicy!
Royal Edinburgh Scottish Shortbread Biscuits, 125g – Value $2.99
Onto Scotland! These shortbread biscuits have a nice buttery and sweet flavor but a bit more bland than what I’m used to in the US. They are only made with three ingredients which may be why: flour, butter, and salt. I’m not in a hurry to finish these, but they’re a great snack to have around for my mid-day sweet craving.
Cadbury’s Flake, 2- 32g bars – Total Value $1.66 USD
I love Cadbury’s but never knew this bar existed. Essentially it’s made with thinly folded Cadbury chocolate that we all know and love. Each bite flakes chocolate so it can be a bit messy to eat. But wow is it good chocolate! This is a great and fun discovery from TopMunch.
Verdict: This month’s TopMunch box has a value of $14.77, which like last month, falls short of the $22 a month subscription cost. This is my first TopMunch experience and value aside, I’m really happy with this month’s curation. I discovered six new international snacks and gained an education about the UK, via the handy booklet. Even though I’m considering the nice assortment of snacks and amount of time that went into curating the new TopMusic, TopPhrase, and TopTravel sections, I do still think this box could benefit from an additional snack to help round-out the box cost.
What do you think of this month’s TopMunch box?
