My Texas Market May 2017 Review - Info Card

This month's theme is: "The Bee's Knees." From My Texas Market:

This box is all about the bees y'all! We're celebrating the beginning of spring by partnering with some our favorite Texas apiaries and bee-loving businesses. We're also donating 10% of our procees this month to bee conservation and education in Texas!

My Texas Market May 2017 Review - Info Card

My Texas Market always includes an info card with details about the items included in the box. The information on each company is pretty detailed - I always love when subscriptions include as much info as possible!

My Texas Market May 2017 Review - Chocolate Buttons My Texas Market May 2017 Review - Chocolate Buttons

Chocolate Honey Buttons from Srsly Chocolate + Two Hives Honey - Value $8?

I'm guessing on the value since these were created specifically for this box!

I always gravitate towards the chocolate first, so these were the first item I plucked out of the box. These rustic little chocolates were delicious! I am a fan of dark chocolate in general and thought these were right in the sweet spot of being flavorful but not too bitter, likely thanks to the addition of the Two Hives Honey. They didn't last long!

My Texas Market also included this card from Two Hives Honey with more info about their brand and about honey bees.

My Texas Market May 2017 Review - Lip Balm My Texas Market May 2017 Review - Lip Balm

Sweet Orange Lip Balm from Gretchen Bee Ranch, 4 oz  - Value $5

This lip balm is awesome. It does soften quickly so it's not something I'd want to carry around in the summer heat, but it's perfect for stashing on my vanity or on my desk at work. I am a fan of citrus, and this smells amazing! The beeswax, coconut oil, and shea butter blend is very moisturizing too.

My Texas Market May 2017 Review - Info Card

We also received a small info card about Gretchen Bee Ranch, where this balm is from. ( I love the idea of a ranch full of bees and honestly can't help but imagine tiny cowboys and bees wearing cowbells.)

My Texas Market May 2017 Review - Beeswax Bars My Texas Market May 2017 Review - Beeswax Bars My Texas Market May 2017 Review - Beeswax Bars

Beeswax Bars from Moore Honey, 2 x 1 oz bars - Value $2

When I pulled these out of the box, I was definitely wondering what on earth I was supposed to do with them! The info card suggests a quick Google search for ideas, which turned up a few interesting uses:

  • Melt and mix with coconut oil for furniture polish
  • Melt and apply to fabric to make your own eco-friendly cling wrap replacement
  • Waterproof shoes and other outdoors items
  • Various DIYs for candles, lip balm, moisturizer, etc

I'm not sure what I'll end up doing with them yet, but I am intrigued by the furniture polish and cling wrap idea! I thought it was pretty cool of My Texas Market to include this item, especially since it's something I'm guessing a lot of people may have never really seen or thought about before.

My Texas Market May 2017 Review - Citrus Beeswax Candle My Texas Market May 2017 Review - Citrus Beeswax Candle

Citrus Sunshine Candle from Mind Your Own Bees Wax Candle Company, approx 4 oz (35 hours) - Value $13

As mentioned earlier, I love citrus scents, and this candle smells amazing! I love that the blend isn't just one citrus in particular; it really is very sunshiny and cheerful. This has a 35 hour burn time, too, so it will last awhile.

My Texas Market May 2017 Review - Wild Raw Honey

Desert Creek Raw Texas Honey, 1 lb - Value $6.69

Raw honey is definitely always a treat! I use it mostly for sweetening tea or drizzling over granola and yogurt for breakfast. Did you know that honey takes on different flavors depending on the flowers that the bees are feeding on? I thought this one tasted a bit like a wildflower honey, but it definitely is a little mellower than honey I've tried from local beekeepers in Pennsylvania.

Fun fact: This company was started by a 13 year old as a hobby, and he grew the business to over 400 hives before he graduated high school!

My Texas Market also included this brochure for bee keeping classes from Texas Bee Supply. This would be a really fun way to take this month's theme further 'out of the box'! Since we don't live in Texas we won't get to use it, but I will say my interest is piqued.

Verdict: This was a really fun little box to explore! Definitely worth checking out if you're local to Texas and want to support local brands. I think this would also be a fun gift for Texas ex-pats who are looking for a little piece of their home state each month. Value wise, we came in at $34.69, which is almost the same as the price of the box - so you'd be hard pressed to put together your own version of this box for less. The curation especially was really good in this box, with items that I think nearly everyone could use and appreciate.

I must say I am surprised the honey is valued that low. There isn’t a vast difference, but around here 16oz of honey goes for $1-2 more.
