barkThins Snacking Chocolate in Dark Chocolate Almond with Sea Salt, 2 oz. – Value $1.70 (buy a 4.7 oz. for $4 at Target)
These are dark chocolate chunks filled with chopped almonds and a hint of sea salt. I’m not a fan of super dark chocolate but this snack gets just the right balance of bitter and sweet for my tastes. Personally, I like the Pretzels and Sea Salt flavor from the Girl’s Sunshine Cube more, but this still has a lot of deliciousness that will keep me munching until the bag is empty.
LaraBar Fruits and Greens Strawberry Spinach Cashew Bar, 1.24 oz. – Value $1.25 (buy a box of 4 for $4.99)
I received the same Larabar in the Girl’s Cube and boy, was it a staggering discovery. Larabars are now regular additions to my weekly diet. This fruit and nut bar is made from only 5 ingredients: apples, apricots, cashews, strawberries, and spinach. The texture is dense, soft, and chewy. Needless to say, it’s also very filling. I taste the slightly sweet and tart flavors of apples and strawberries as well as the savory, nutty flavors of cashews. There might be a little spinach but I don’t really taste it at all. Plus, this bar is gluten free, vegan, kosher, and it has no added sugar.
Late July Jalapeno Lime Chips, 5.5 oz. – Value $2.99
These tortilla chips are also a great discovery. They’re lightly salted with a lime kick that sneaks up on your taste buds after a couple of bites. That said, the lime flavor does not overwhelm the rest of the chip at all. I can eat these by themselves or with salsa or with guac. Basically, they’re delicious. Two thumbs up!
Albanese 12 Flavor Gummi Bears, 7.5 oz. – Value $2.49 (buy a 1 lb. bag for 2.99 or a 5 lb. bag for $11.99)
This snack tops my “Best Food Discoveries from a Subscription Box” list. I was first introduced to these gummies in the Girl’s Fresh Start Cube back in January. Since then my life has changed for the better. They embody my ideal texture and consistency: soft, squishy, and chewy without sticking to my teeth. There are some gummies that claim to have different “flavors” but taste more or less the same, but not these! These 12 flavors are definitely distinct and very delicious. I don’t mean to be dramatic, but if you have a sweet tooth like me, this might change your life.
The Cookie Department Awaken Baked Espresso Cookie – Value $2.91 (buy a pack of 12 for $34.95)
This cookie contains the equivalent of one cup of coffee. I’ve heard of coffee shots and coffee energy bars, but this seriously raises the bar for caffeine-laden snacks. At first, I wasn’t a fan of its intense bitter espresso smell. However, the cookie tastes great. It has chunks of chocolate and bits of ground coffee in every bite. The hint of sea salt balances out the richness as well. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the hearty coffee flavor despite being skeptical about tasting ground coffee bits.
Fatty Sundays Sprinkles Pretzels – Value $3.49
These are chocolate covered pretzels with sprinkles. The pretzel is light and crunchy while the sprinkles add texture and sweetness to the overall flavor. I wish there was more chocolate, though. Also, the retail value is kinda high. I loved eating them but I wouldn’t necessarily go out and buy them at that price point.
This is a sample of SmartyPants’ new Adult Probiotic dietary supplement gummy. The texture is more like a gumdrop than a gummy. The Lemon Creme flavor is sugary sweet with a hint of lemon– it tastes just like candy. I eat gummy multivitamins every day so I love the idea of keeping my gut healthy with gummies too.
Banana Boat Sunscreen Lip Balm SPF 45, 0.15 oz. – Value $1.99
It feels weird getting so excited about lip balm, but this is my favorite item of the box! Everyone needs sunscreen, especially for the lips. I will be the first to admit that I neglect my lips when it comes to sun protection. It’s hard to find a good lip product that also has high SPF, you know? Well, my search is finally over. This balm has a faint sweet scent that fades quickly upon application. It is a little slick on my lips but doesn’t feel greasy. Plus, depending on how much I apply, it’s great layered under other lip products. I had no issues applying cream or liquid lippies over the balm. It has no color, either, so it is perfect for guys as well.
Dude Shower Wipes x2 – Total Value $2
These are body wipes for dirt and sweat because “access to a shower is not always a realistic option.” Each wipe contains aloe and Vitamin E to soothe the skin. They’re also alcohol and paraben free. I think these are great for taking outdoors, to the gym, or even to work. I’ve already passed these on to my boyfriend, who says they’ll be great for emergency situations.
Harry’s Foaming Shave Gel 4 oz. – Value $4
This shaving gel is a repeat item. It contains aloe and cucumber to hydrate and refreshes the skin. It smells like generic men’s body spray to me and creates soft, plush lather; my boyfriend uses it with no complaints.
Harry’s Truman Razor in Total Orange – Total Value $17
This razor is another repeat item. It is made with a comfortable, matte rubbery grip with a weighted core for better control. The blades have a flexible hinge and lubricating strip. Overall, it looks and feels like a high-quality item. Also included is a coupon code to redeem four free blades plus free shipping from the Harry’s website (redeemable for new customers). The razor is worth $9 and the redeemable blades are worth $8.
I took gratuitous amounts of photos this time around. The handle design is sleek and ergonomic.
It’s easy to switch out blades, too.
Smartphone Waterproof Pouch – Value $5?
This waterproof pouch is perfect for camping, beach trips, music festivals, and more. It’s an appropriate addition to this Cube since there are so many situations in which this pouch would come in handy. It’s large enough to hold a smartphone, some change, and a couple of credit cards. I like that you can fold the zipper down and secure it with the velcro for extra protection. It has an adjustable strap on the side and the hole that connects the strap to the pouch is reinforced with a plastic button (a smart move).
Verdict: The total value is about $45, which is a little higher than the cost of the box. My favorite item is definitely the Banana Boat SPF lip balm. I like the curation– the balance between delicious snacks and practical items is on point– but it doesn’t have the same cohesion as the Girl’s version. For comparison’s sake, the Girl’s Sunshine Cube was valued at around $61-71. It may or may not be more difficult to curate guys’ products around a cool theme, but I think the more important part is that both Cubes should have similar value if they’re to be priced the same.
