The Little Book of Hygge: Danish Secrets to Happy Living by Meik Wiking – Retail Value $20 (On Amazon for $13)

Book Summary from Amazon:

Embrace Hygge (pronounced hoo-ga) and become happier with this definitive guide to the Danish philosophy of comfort, togetherness, and well-being.

Why are Danes the happiest people in the world? The answer, says Meik Wiking, CEO of the Happiness Research Institute in Copenhagen, is Hygge. Loosely translated, Hygge—pronounced Hoo-ga—is a sense of comfort, togetherness, and well-being. “Hygge is about an atmosphere and an experience,” Wiking explains. “It is about being with the people we love. A feeling of home. A feeling that we are safe.”

Hygge is the sensation you get when you’re cuddled up on a sofa, in cozy socks under a soft throw, during a storm. It’s that feeling when you’re sharing comfort food and easy conversation with loved ones at a candlelit table. It is the warmth of morning light shining just right on a crisp blue-sky day.

The Little Book of Hygge introduces you to this cornerstone of Danish life, and offers advice and ideas on incorporating it into your own life, such as:

  • Get comfy. Take a break.
  • Be here now. Turn off the phones.
  • Turn down the lights. Bring out the candles.
  • Build relationships. Spend time with your tribe.
  • Give yourself a break from the demands of healthy living. Cake is most definitely Hygge.
  • Live life today, like there is no coffee tomorrow.

From picking the right lighting to organizing a Hygge get-together to dressing hygge, Wiking shows you how to experience more joy and contentment the Danish way.

Stay home, eat sweets, light candles, surround yourself with blankets and pillows, and wear comfy pants? I guess Hygge is an introvert’s dream! I’ve been unknowingly practicing it for years!

(I’m slightly kidding – there are still parts I need to adopt – like turning off your phone, for example.)

But, I really like the parts of this book I’ve read so far!

Erno Laszlo Firm & Lift Hydrogel Mask – 1 Mask Value $16

This is a two part mask (forehead and chin are separate) so it’s easier to get a perfect fit on your face compared to a standard sheet mask. The material is gel-like, and the serum was super hydrating. This was a refreshing mask that looked a little less scary than a typical sheet mask – I’m a fan!

Wilma Schumann Skincare Hydrating Collagen Eye Pads – Value $3.60

(FYI – the listing for this box says 2 pairs of these eye pads, but I only received 1 set.)

More masks! These collagen gel eye masks were great for boosting hydration. (You can also use them on your smile lines instead!)

Parker Thatch Eye Mask Value $48? Value $25

Even more masks! Every variety of mask!

This is a pricey brand of sleep masks! It’s made from canvas material with a little padding, so it’s comfortable and blocks out light well.

Kusmi Tea Paris Be Cool Tea Tin – .7 oz Value $6.70

This loose leaf tea blend is made with Apple, Rosehip seeds, Verbena leaves, Peppermint, Aniseed, and Liquorice root.

I love the blend, and the peppermint really stands out to me in the flavor – a perfect bedtime tea!

Kusmi Tea Paris Tea Ball Infuser – Value $5.90

And the tea is paired with an easy-to-clean silicone tea infuser! (I love that they added this since not everyone getting this box might already be drinking loose leaf tea.)

TokyoMilk Dark Lip Elixir in Pretty Rotten No. 33 – FULL SIZE! Value $7

This is hands down, my favorite scent in the box. Usually, apple scents don’t work for me, but this “rotten” version is just lovely! The lip balm works well, too. It’s great if you are looking for a natural, more no-shine finish.

Votivo Aromatic Candle in St. Germain Lavender – FULL SIZE! Value $12

This scent is described as “a refreshing wash of white linen and seashore breeze gently gives way to soft lavender fields and a sweet grounding of tonka, vanilla and patchouli.”

It actually smells more like a traditional cologne to me! (And I like it!)

JUARA Candlenut Body Creme – Travel-size (1.5 oz) Value $7

I’ve sampled this body cream before and I love it! The formula is decadent and moisturizing without leaving my skin feeling greasy. Plus, it is ingredient-conscious, too!

Kérastase Nutritive Masquintense – Travel-size (75 ml) Value $23.40

This hair mask is designed for fine hair (mine would be considered medium), but I tried this out and it still worked well to soften and hydrate my hair. (And you only need to leave it on for 5 minutes!)

Smith & Cult Nailed Lacquer in Fauntleroy – FULL SIZE! Value $18

(You’ll either receive this color or Exit the Void)

I love the Smith & Cult brand! Their formulas are great, and the bottles are so pretty. (That indent on the cap is part of the design.)

This shade is a bright, creme lilac. It feels perfect for Spring weather. Here it is on:

It took two coats for full-coverage.

Dylan’s Candy Bar Gummy Bear Stack A-Round – Value $14

These gummy bears are a little larger than your standard bear and they are better tasting, too! My husband and I split these and we loved them. (And I like to think we accomplished the sweet treats + togetherness parts of Hygee just a little bit!)

Lollia by Margot Elena Shea Butter Handcreme in Relax – Travel-size (1.5 oz) Value $9.40

Lollia products always have the most gorgeous packaging! The scent wasn’t too relaxing for me, though. I didn’t detect the lavender too much, but rather an overall sweet and floral scent.

Tata Harper Rejuvenating Serum – Travel-size 10 ml Value $32

Tata Harper is a luxe, ingredient-conscious beauty brand that rarely makes appearances in subscription boxes, so this is a treat! The serum is hydrating and feels wonderful on my skin. (It also has a subtle, natural rose scent.)

Marcelle Gentle Eye Make-Up Remover for Sensitive Eyes – Travel-size (50 ml) Value $5.60

This makeup remover worked well on my stubborn eye makeup, and it has no scent!

Whish Shave Cream

L’Oreal Mythic Oil

(I won’t count these toward the value of the box since the samples vary.)

Verdict: This box has a value of about $199! I think that’s a great value! (And even better with the 10% off HELLO coupon code). Plus I love the Stay-In theme of this box. It felt like an indulgent Treat Yo’ Self experience! Perfect for a Mother’s Day Gift, or a gift to yourself!

Sad I missed it, does anyone bought an extra they would sell ?

Betty, I do have an extra one I can sell you, if you’re still interested. I got the boxes a while ago, but just now looking through mine. It’s really a great box. The other one I got for my husband’s friend who helps out in our shop a lot, to give to his wife (who always seemed so understanding about him working so much). Well, then his wife left him.

Not to be cheap, but… $14 for gummy bears? Seriously?!

Awesome box, but it’s not in the budget at this time. Enjoy!!! 😉

I totally grabbed this box (with the HELLO coupon) and I’m so glad I did. My husband and I are really enjoying reading the hygge book. Do I literally love every item.

I like everything in my box, but I noticed that my Tata Harper serum has more of a strong herbal scent rather than a subtle rose scent 🙁 I wonder if it’s just me?

Perfect box – I’ll use everything in it! For those of us with beauty product overload these lifestyle boxes are what’s needed to get me excited.

FYI — it looks like there is colo variation for the Kusmi Tea Paris Tea Ball Infuser. I got pink!

Liz Cadman

Thanks for the heads up! 🙂

How big is the eye mask? I have a big head and many eye masks tend to fit too tightly.

Liz Cadman

I have a big head and this one is a little on the snug side for me. (I’m hoping I can stretch it a bit.) Hope that helps!

We have big heads and PROUD!!

Parker Thatch Eye Mask – Value $48 – How this eye mask can cost that much?? How is it different from what you get on airplane for free? (pardon my ignorance).

Agreed! I love the box overall so this isn’t a complaint of the full package, but that eye mask in basic canvas with thin elastic strapping is possibly even less luxe than the free masks you receive on airplanes.

Ha, was wondering the same thing. You should ask the Parker Thatch peeps.

The sleep mask is actually only valued at $25. The $48 one is because it’s personalized.

In addition to being a great box overall, this one would make a great Mother’s Day box. 😀

Liz Cadman

Def! I will definitely be grabbing one as a gift. Maybe one for a giveaway, too! 🙂

This was my favorite LE box. I will use everything. Sad about my mystery pack- all foils.

Mine, too! First over their summer one a few years back with the knockaround sunglasses. Q

Liz Cadman

Yay for your favorite LE box!! It’s definitely one of my favorites, too!

I love this!

Liz Cadman

Yay! 💕

I just tried and it wouldn’t let me use the HELLO coupon and choose a gift with purchase gift. It said only one promo allowed. 🙁

Liz Cadman

Sorry about that – Birchbox only allows one coupon code per order.

Thanks! I thought it sounded to good to be true… 😉

The temptation is strong. I think I need to get this.

Liz Cadman

It’s such a great box! 🙂
