This month’s theme is all about Japan! It’s always a surprise with Surprise Ride!
This is the information card that details everything included.
This month, Surprise Ride included these two cards as sort of a parents’ guide. They are really helpful in letting parents know what to expect from the included activities.
Flat Stanley’s Worldwide Adventures 3: The Japanese Ninja Surprise by Jeff Brown – Value $4.99
I could not believe my nine-year-old had never heard of flat Stanley before! And I had no idea there were books about him! Fortunately, this seems to be a good leisure reading level for him. From Amazon:
A Flat Ninja?
Stanley and his brother, Arthur, are such huge fans of the movie star ninja Oda Nobu that they decide to send him something even better than fan mailóStanley himself! Soon enough, Flat Stanley is in Japan, seeing the country with his idol. But when trouble surprises them, it will take a real hero to save the day.
Of course, my son loved these!
Our first project was to plant a Japanese Dragon Tree!
These were the supplies that were included. The only thing we had to supply from home was water.
My son’s first step was to mix the soil pellet with water. We couldn’t believe how much it grew!
He then put some of the moist soil in the little pot and added the two dragon egg seeds.
The bottom of the outer pot can be detached, and he put some water in it.
He put the top of the outer pot back on the bottom and placed the inner pot inside. He also put this little transparent plastic lid on the top to keep moisture in.
This is my son’s completed planting. Once it sprouts, he can put moss over the soil to keep the moisture in instead of the plastic cover. He’s excited!
This is the instruction card for our second project, which was to create a sushi game! I like that the instructions are so well illustrated.
These are the supplies that were included, and we didn’t need anything additional from home for this project.
My son really got into making these little sushi pieces with the modeling clay! So much so that he forgot to tell me to take a picture until he was done making them. But, they were basically just like working with Play-Dough.
This is the Start board with instructions. There are points assigned to the circles that the sushi pieces are on. If you get your sushi to the finish board using chopsticks without dropping it, you get that number of points. If you drop it, you lose three points.
Action shot! Here is the completed game with my son putting the sushi on the last cycle on the finish board. The game is cute, and I’m happy he’s learning how to use chopsticks. I just love his little sushi pieces!
Verdict: Surprise Ride is awesome! I do have to mention, however, that it appears as if they have discontinued including toys in their mailings. They have been scaling back for a while now, though, so I’m not too surprised by that. Despite that, we had two awesome activities this month, and the book is also a winner. Surprise Ride is always a fun surprise!
