This month's country is Spain. This letter introduces the box, as well as the culture of this featured location.
There's also a list of the products inside. My favorite thing about this box is the thought they put into explaining each item, why they were chosen, or how the item fits into Spanish culture.
TopMunch even includes a little Spanish language lesson! How fun!
There's also a written tour of Spain. Again, this box does a great job of really giving you a sense of place.
Here's the back of the sheet. It really makes me want to visit Spain!
As if that wasn't enough, TopMunch has put together a playlist to help add to the cultural experience!
There are also some details on how to engage with the TopMunch community (and nab a discount!).
Torres Black Truffle Potato Chips, 1.41 oz. - Value $3.51
These chips are so tasty! I'm a big fan of chips and other salty snacks, but I've never had chips with such a sophisticated flavor.
The chips are light and crisp, but unlike regular potato chips, they have the aromatic, earthy flavor of truffle. It kind of fills your mouth and billows up into your sinuses as you munch on them.
Dulma La Mallorquina Puff Pastry, 5.9 oz. - Value $3.49
According to the info sheet, these pastries are the specialty of the Astorga area of Spain.
The pastries are sort of like a stiffer donut. They have soft, sugary layers of pastry and are incredibly rich and satisfying. The glaze on the outside wasn't as gooey as I expected, looking at the picture on the box, but it was delightfully sticky. I loved the honey taste that came through, too. It added a complexity to what could've been a standard sticky treat.
Fried Fava Beans - Value $2.60?
I couldn't find this exact item online, so I linked to something similar.
I've enjoyed fava beans before, but never in snack form!
These crispy, fried beans have a slightly salty savory flavor and a heartiness you wouldn't get from chips or corn snacks. I started out thinking I'd eat just one or two, and ended up enjoying a whole handful!
La Casa 70% Cacao Chocolate Bar, 35 g - Value $0.70
When it comes to chocolate, I say the darker, the better. So I was very pleased to see this 70% cacao bar in the box!
The chocolate was smooth and rich, but not overly bitter. It tasted almost exactly like classic chocolate morsels you'd bake with, just in bar form. I kept this bar on my coffee table and broke off a square anytime my sweet tooth tingled!
Andres Gavino Tortas de Aceite - Value $5.99
These tortas were nothing like I expected, but they ended up being my favorite item in the box!
Light and crisp, these little breads look like regular tortas, but their flavor is sweeter and more intriguing than I would've thought. The olive oil in the recipe gives them a savory note, but a kick of anise and a pinch of sweetness has them really treading the line between dessert and savory snack. As the info sheet mentions, they'd be great with anything from ice cream to cheeses!
Verdict: I really love getting TopMunch in the mail. Besides the fact that the snacks are all super unique, tasty treats, the box puts so much work into painting a full picture of the culture these snacks hail from. That not only feeds my travel bug, but it helps add depth and excitement to the simple act of snacking. The value of the snacks is only about $16.29 this month, which falls a little short of the $19.00 price. But I'd say the other elements of the box, from the language guide to the playlist, more than make up for the $3.00 difference. I find this box more than worth it!
