Golden Tote $149 Tote Review – February 2017

This post may contain referral/affiliate links. If you buy something, MSA may earn a commission. Read the full disclosure.

If you aren’t familiar with Golden Tote, here’s a really quick intro: Every month you get to pick out 1-2 pieces, and they surprise you with the rest. (The surprise items are completely different from the pieces you pick from). For the $149 tote, you pick 2 items, and get 3-4 more surprise items based on your style profile.

FYI – This is not a typical subscription, each month they release a new collection and you can decide whether or not you want to buy it.

Every month they design a new tote, too!

This box was sent to us at no cost for review. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).

This review is of the Golden Tote, $149 a month, box.

Golden Tote has recently made updates to their return policy – now you can easily go into your order history and return individual items (it used to be an all-or-nothing deal). This month they’re also promoting their Facebook buy/sell/trade group, which is a great group for finding items you missed (whether or not you bought a tote), selling items that don’t work for you, and seeing a lot of reveals of the totes others get.

Personally, I think the Facebook group is a great idea and really helps reduce the amount of risk involved in getting surprise items/clothing online. You can also swap for any subscription box goodies on our swap site, too!

Puella Raglan Top – Value $40

This top is awesome! I love the print and the color/tiny stripes of the sleeve fabric. The sleeves are a stretchy knit and the graphic print is a flowy, silky material that feels great and is flattering. I love the colors, print, design, and basically everything about this shirt.

The top’s hem is lower in the back, and the material in the back is the same knit as the sleeves on top, and then the bottom half is the graphic fabric.

Knit Factor Blazer – Value $50

This blazer was one of my chosen items (aka one of the two items I picked from their February collection to be in my tote). I have wanted a knit blazer for a while now. This one has a nice long length for me!

I don’t need a blazer often, but with a blazer like this, I feel more comfortable just working it into my wardrobe more. I may have been able to size down in this because it runs a little oversized but I think that still works!

Fun2Fun Floral Blouse – Value $40

I love Fun2Fun blouses! They were a big part of my wardrobe last summer. They’re just easy-to-wear and flattering and great prints and colors.

Here’s a closer look at this tiny floral print.

Gilli Floral Midi Dress – Value $40

This may be one of my favorite dresses I’ve ever received from Golden Tote (although, I’ve received so many amazing dresses). The design is so classy and flattering, and the midi length is perfect on me. I also like the floral print that looks hand-drawn. This dress is so comfortable and easy; I can tell it’s going to get a lot of wear this summer.

Puella Pleated Dress – Value $78

This dress was my second chosen item, and I really love it! Of course I do, because it’s Puella, but I think the design is super cute, too. The fabric feels like a jersey-esque knit and is so soft and stretchy!

I think the way they did the paneling with the stripes is so stylish. They also made this in a gray and olive colorway and I wish I had also bought the olive. The waist is a little big on me, but I wouldn’t want the arms/shoulders any tighter so I’ll have to just cinch the waist in – should be an easy fix.

Beaded Choker – Value $12

I don’t usually add anything onto my tote purchases but I loved the look of this beaded choker for Spring! It’s pale pink with some gold marbled in – I think it’ll be really pretty with so many looks.

Verdict: February was a really great Golden Tote for me! My chosen items (the blazer and Puella dress) fit great and are perfect and my stylist picked amazing surprises for me! I got some great items from my favorite brands. As far as value goes, I got $248 worth of boutique clothing for the $149 price I paid – I’m happy with that.

What do you think about Golden Tote? Did you order this month?

  1. Does the $149 pay for the items you receive or do you have to purchase them in addition to the $149?

  2. Yes to the blue dress! And a fair price, too. I love the black and white one, but it’s on the pricey side. But that’s just me.

  3. The problem with the trading group is it’s almost impossible to sell things now. It use to be a super busy group with lots of activity but now it’s dead. I’ve been with GT from the beginning but things have gone downhill and so many people left. The quility has suffered and the items just aren’t as well made then they were.

Actually the fact that they gave you the tote to review is a big red sign. They’ve never given blogger totes before and I think it’s a sign of how its struggling. In all the years I’ve used them I’ve never seen so many discounts and give always as they have in the last six months. I’m sad to say that I think my days with them are done.

  4. The problem I run into with their FB group is that I haven’t purchased a tote before so I can’t join the group.

    • Hmm… I don’t think that’s a reason they wouldn’t let someone in. I’ve seen many people in the group post about how they’ve only ever bought off the FSOT on the page but not a tote. Or people saying the lurked in the group but finally bought their first tote. If you follow the link shown on the info sheet you should be able to find the group and join!

  5. Wow, you look amazing in the black and white outfit with the boots and all put together perfectly. I also love the blazer with the floral shirt under it. It looks so cute on you! Everything is awesome, but those 2 outfits are my favorite and now I’m so tempted to sub. I’m not sure if I can afford the $150 but may try the $60 one 1st. Thanks for the great review!

    • Thanks so much, Michelle!

  6. So nice when everything works! The stripes could be lined up better on the black dress but I suspect that there would still be places they can’t do it just based on the style. Love the navy dress as it’s actually long enough for you & I know have trouble getting enough length.

    • Thanks! Yes, a 100% winner tote is so great!

  7. The striped dress looks great on you, but it’s annoying that the lines don’t line up in the center. That’s now how they showed it on the website.

    • Agreed. Mine was even worse, so I emailed customer service, and they agreed it didn’t look good and said they would look to see if they had another that looked better. Fingers crossed. I know it takes longer to line up stripes when constructing clothes, but it’s irritating to show a dress constructed correctly on the site and then to send out ones like the one I received.

I also got the navy floral dress, and I LOVE it.

    • I agree, and meant to say something in the review, but I really don’t think it’s enough for me to not reach for it. I know it bugs some people more than others. I’m bummed but I don’t know itnira worth trying to exchang it for me personally.

  8. I did not receive any of your items, BUT I got the beST GT to date…..i got the $149. and I got 5 items! All are just beautiful for shopping by mail. Thank you GT!!!!

  9. Wow! What a great tote — you look wonderful in everything and it really does look like the stylists selected items specifically for you.

I’ve had bad luck with clothing subs but I would sign up in a minute if I thought I though I could get the tote you received!

  10. That blue dress was made for you! So gorgeous!!!

  11. What a great tote! Everything looks terrific on you.
