The Story Box Picture Book Review + Coupon – November 2016

story-box-november-2016-box

The Story Box is a monthly children’s book subscription. They offer three subscription options: Board Books Package (children ages 0 – 2 1/2 years), Picture Book Package (children ages 2 1/2 – 6 years), and the Family Package (for multiple children in various age ranges).

What I find unique about The Story Box is that the boxes are curated by a speech pathologist and the included parent guide (or tip card for board books) give language activities and hands-on activities that go along with each story. The picture book parent guide is divided into three age ranges (toddlers, preschoolers and early elementary) so you can pick which language concepts best match your child’s age and ability.

My Subscription Addiction pays for this subscription. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

This review is of the Picture Book, $19.99 a month, box.

Wild About You! by Judy Sierra – Value $15.51 on Amazon (retail price $17.99)

Wild About You! is another title in the Wild About Books series. It’s a rhyming book about different animals that live in the zoo and their unique kinds of babies. It also sends the messages that everyone in the village (or zoo as the case may be) helps to raise a child (or animal!). Marc Brown’s illustrations are spot on as always.

My daughter and I used the suggested language concept for toddlers. She named the animals as we read the story the second time and also pointed out their body parts. It was a great vocabulary building exercise because there were many new animals she was unfamiliar with.

Too Many Moose! by Lisa Bakos – Value $11.53 on Amazon (retail price $16.99)

If one moose is the perfect pet, then more moose must be even better, right? Not quite…Martha discovers that what started out as one perfect pet moose soon becomes quite a headache when she orders more and more. This funny, creative, colorful, rhyming book just screams to be taught in an alliteration lesson at school!

The Parent Guide concept we used this month was the role play activity for preschoolers. Both my kids joined in the fun for this fun activity. We took turns pretending to be Martha and ordering all different kinds of animals online to be our pets. We all played the parts of the animals and mailman too and had a blast.

Verdict: The Story Box has been sending such fabulous selections lately. We can’t pick a favorite book, we loved both. Though I review numerous children’s book subscriptions and we have been enjoying them all, I especially like how Story Box includes the parent guide. The ideas in the guide are so approachable and help build vital language skills. The value of this box was more than $27 which I am happy with.
