The information card listed the book phone case of the month: Wicked, Son of a Witch! It also listed the other Wicked themed gifts. The back of the card was a quote from Wicked from Elphaba.

Book Phone Case - Value $29.00

I was so excited to see that this month’s theme was Wicked! I have seen the play twice on Broadway and absolutely love it. I also think it was very fitting for October. The phone case is made from faux leather and is more like a phone wallet in that it opens with a snap closure and has slots for credit cards. The piece that fits around your phone is hard plastic and reminds me of my normal iPhone case.

The phone case also comes with a cleaning cloth and protective film to apply to your screen.

This is the back view of the case. I love the Elphaba quote they selected: “Everyone deserves the chance to fly.”

Here is the case up close so you can see the attention to detail. The case really looks like an old book cover!

Elphaba’s Necklace - Value $8.00?

While this necklace isn’t my own personal style it looks like a perfect Elphaba necklace and for that reason, it’s so kitschy and fun! And of course, the stones had to be green.

A Wicked Witch Broomstick Pen - Value $1.00?

The perfect pen with which to write your magic spells!

The Wicked Scarf - Value $8.00?

Once Upon a BookCase recommends wrapping this scarf around your neck, purse or even to tie up your hair. The deep emerald green is a gorgeous shade.

Verdict: I really enjoyed my first Once Upon a BookCase box. I’m a children’s librarian who loves all things books, so as soon as I found out about this subscription I had to give it a try. The phone cases are so unique and well-made. I think the value is fabulous too. This month’s value with my estimations is about $46! The phone case alone (if you purchase it on Etsy) is $29.00 so everything else they add to the box is just a bonus in my eyes. I’m so excited to see what theme they pick for November!

What do you think of Once Upon a BookCase? Do you think these phone cases are as special as I do?

Eek, I would not have been happy with this from a book-themed box. They seem to take it for granted that their subscribers aren’t actually familiar with the books they’re referencing. Like how Wicked and Son of a Witch are different books. Or how the art and quotes are not from the book Wicked, but from the musical, which is entirely different in tone, ending, etc. Or how the necklace is a copy not of anything Elphaba wears or is said to wear, but of the necklace that Zelena wears in Once Upon a Time.

The items THEMSELVES are lovely and I’m glad you like them (subscriptions are always, to me, more about how much I LIKE the items rather than their tag value) but I would expect better from a supposedly book-themed subscription.
