I subscribed for three months, and this was my third shipment, so they sent me a special offer to continue my subscription. 50% off my next box! That's a pretty good deal.
One of the benefits of membership in the Microbrewed Beer of the Month Club is that they provide a really thorough guide to the beers you received, pictured here. It talks about the different microbreweries and their histories, plus it provides serving suggestions.
Loch Down Scotch Ale by Arcadia Brewing Co., Battle Creek, Michigan
Now on to the beers! This is a Scotch Ale with a 8.5% alcohol content. No wonder my husband stopped after one! It features hops from Nugget plus Maris Otter and Roasted Barley malts. Scotch Ales are generally too strong in content as well as flavor for my tastes, but my husband is a fan. Look at how dark it is!
IPA by Arcadia Brewing Co., Battle Creek, Michigan
This is an India Pale Ale with a 6% alcohol content. It features hops from Cascade and Columbus, plus Pale and Crystal malts. I found this to be a kind of lightweight IPA, and more refreshing than most. It had a good flavor and a nice, light aroma.
Lawnmower Lager by Baderbrau Brewing Company, Chicago, Illinois
This is an India Pale Lager with a 5.5% alcohol content. It features Glacier and Falconer's Flight hops, plus German Malt. I wish every lager tasted like this one! I find most lagers pretty flavorless, but this one was excellent. I could really taste the hops, which is rare for a lager.
Red Tail Amber Ale by Baderbrau Brewing Company, Chicago, Illinois
This is an American Amber Ale with a 6.1% alcohol content. It features hops from Warrior and Cascade, plus 2-Row and Caramunich 40 & 60 malts. Amber Ales always seem really easy and accessible to me. There's never a good reason to turn one down. This one was no exception. It had an exceptional balance of sweet, bitter, and acidic flavors.
Verdict: First of all, I know $42.95 seems like an awful lot to spend on a 12-pack! However, I think the true microbrew connoisseur would consider this a bargain over driving around the country to different microbreweries. In this regard, I think The Microbrewed Beer of the Month Club provides a valuable service. I enjoyed sampling the different beers, and I appreciate the variety of beers that was sent. I think I found a new favorite lager with Lawnmower this month!
