OrangeGlad includes a really beautifully designed booklet to accompany the sweets, that gives a little information on the individual artisans and the goodies themselves.
I received 5 sweets this month. The Artisan Partner this month is Nicole's Naturals.Nicole was diagnosed as gluten intolerant in 2002 and worked to develop gluten free breakfast recipes that are just as delicious as their gluten filled counterparts. Several items in this month's box are gluten free.
Bakery Street Raspberry Butter Shortbread
This came really crumbled unfortunately. The only part of the cookies still intact was the jam filling. This was a replacement for two of the treats that they couldn't add to the box this month. Bakery Street is a San Francisco local bakery that has been open since 1982!
OrangeGlad Exclusive - Apricot Streusel Cobbler
This streusel cobbler is an OrangleGlad exclusive, inspired by Nicole's Naturals, the Artisan Partner this month. This streusel is similar to a granola or trail mix, and is gluten free.
There you can see the completely broken apart cookie (the rest is crumbles in the bag). These really were delicious though. They are not gluten free. You can definitely taste all the butter in these - I don't think I want to know the calorie count!
The streusel was good, but a little odd to me. It has walnuts, dried apricots, cinnamon and streusel cookie chunks and puffed brown rice. It was good, but seemed weird to eat it as is. I think it would be great on yogurt though.
OrangeGlad Exclusive - Almond Honey Florentine
This Florentine cookie is gluten-free and is made up of almonds and caramel mostly. It is a delicious, crispy cookie and I really enjoyed this with a cup of coffee.
Fine Sconehenge Baking Company Gluten-free Ultimate Brownie - $2.50
I love the play on words in the company's name! This brownie is gluten-free and absolutely delicious. The wheat flour replacement here is rice flour, but please keep in mind that this brownie was made in a facility that processes nuts, wheat, and dairy. I know that can cause cross contamination, so it's always best to be aware.
The brownie itself was very chocolatey and dense. I loved the flavor! The vanilla really came through here, and I love vanilla and chocolate together.
Hillside Candy Organic Honey Candies - $3.08
These are good, but there's nothing special about the flavor. All honey drops taste similar to me; this one is no exception. These candies are gluten-free though, and they are made with only cane sugar, brown rice syrup, and organic honey. That's an ingredient list you can feel good about if you're looking to avoid additives in your food!
Verdict: I always enjoy my OrangeGlad boxes, but I will say that they seem to be pretty scant as far as value goes. There were a few items I couldn't find a price for, but those items (the OrangeGlad Exclusives and the Shortbread Cookies), can't be more than $10.00 combined. The value I was able to determine is just $5.58, so if you were to assume the other three cost about $10.00, the value here is just under $16.00. Several items are exclusive to the box - that raises excitement, but I'm still not sure that makes up for a $9.00 loss on the box.
What do you think of OrangeGlad? Do you think the price is justifiable based on the value each month?
