One-Punch Man Manga Vol. 1 – Value $8.45 on Amazon (retail price $9.99)

One-Punch Man is a series about a small-time hero, Saitama, who “accidentally” becomes the strongest man alive, defeating monsters with a single punch. I’ve mentioned this before but One-Punch Man is one of my favorite series this year. Many of my friends (as well as many people on the internet) have high acclaim for the anime and manga. It is a satirical look at the superhero trope and includes an eclectic range of characters. There is plenty of action and plot development too.

This volume has a variant cover based on artwork from the Japanese edition of the manga. Here’s the summary:

Nothing about Saitama passes the eyeball test when it comes to superheroes, from his lifeless expression to his bald head to his unimpressive physique. However, this average-looking guy has a not-so-average problem—he just can’t seem to find an opponent strong enough to take on! Every time a promising villain appears, he beats the snot out of ’em with one punch! Can Saitama finally find an opponent who can go toe-to-toe with him and give his life some meaning? Or is he doomed to a life of superpowered boredom?

Tokyo Ghoul Standee Keychain Set – Value $8?

Tokyo Ghoul is a dark fantasy series about an alternate world inhabited by ghouls, creatures that look human but must eat human flesh to survive. These keychains feature protagonist Ken Kaneki and fellow ghoul Touka Kirishima.

The keychains double as standees, as shown above. Tokyo Ghoul has been featured before in Loot Anime but I still haven’t had the chance to read or watch it. It looked a little too scary. The cute art on these keychains may help change my mind, though.

Twin Star Exorcists T-Shirt – Value $15?

Twin Star Exorcists is about two powerful young exorcists who are destined to get married and have the ultimate exorcist child, despite hating each other’s guts. Talk about a match made in… heaven? I have not seen or read this series but it’s on my list of to-dos. The artwork is great. I think any fan of Twin Star Exorcists would enjoy this shirt.

Bleach Watch – Value $20?

Bleach is a well known, long-running series and is one of the top titles in anime and manga (alongside One Piece and Naruto). To my surprise, I learned that it ended recently in August! This watch comes secured with padding. The black-white-red color scheme matches the outer box– the dude on it is protagonist Ichigo Kurosaki.

I’m impressed by the details. The watch features sturdy canvas straps and black metal. Notice the chain link design around the watch face! The 3, 6, 9, and 12 indicators are printed in Japanese. Ichigo looks pretty creepy here.

DEMI-HUMAN Phone Charm – Value $2?

This month’s phone charm is half of a kitsune (fox) mask worn by Yume, the Loot Anime mascot, on the poster. It’s fitting since masks are notable in a lot of fantasy shows such as Bleach, Tokyo Ghoul, and Twin Star Exorcists. I guess it comes with the demi-human territory?

Verdict: The One-Punch Man manga is really all that is needed to satisfy me this month. The estimated retail value is around $55, which is nearly twice the cost of the box. That’s on the lower end for Loot Anime. Like most months, all the items are exclusive to the box. Exclusive items can be either a boon or bust in other subscription boxes for various reasons, but Loot Anime consistently bring out high-quality items. I think maybe one more item would have rounded out the box a little more, but like I said, if I see One-Punch Man, I give two thumbs up.
