Each Lip Monthly box comes with a card detailing each product inside the bag.

Each package comes with a makeup bag. If you are familiar with Ipsy bags, I’d say the quality isn’t as good as Ipsy bags, but it is still pretty good for a bonus bag. (I’d like to see them do more playful prints like Ipsy does in future months!)

Now onto the items! We’ll start with the one non-lip item since it matches the bag!

NCLA Petite Instant Nail Fashion Wraps – Value $9

I’m pretty impressed that Lip Monthly did a collab with NCLA and matched the nail wraps to the bag!

I’ve now tried both the nail sticker wrap and the nail wrap that is made from actual polish (like Incoco) and I prefer the non-sticker kind, so I wasn’t the biggest fan of these.

In general, the actual nail strips are easier for me to apply because I can stretch them easier, remove air bubbles, and file off the remainder with ease.

That being said, I still think these look pretty cute on:

Now time for the lippies!

JCat Wonder Lip Paint in Caterpillar Smoke – Value $5

Based on the packaging, I immediately thought this company was trying to copy the look of the cult classic Lip Tar. (But looking that up, I just realized Lip Tar has changed their packaging!)

The formula wasn’t the same to Lip Tar, though. While the pigment was good, I found the formula to be too runny. (You can see in my swatch picture below that it’s already running after only putting it on my wrist for a few seconds!)

STARLOOKS Lip Crayon in Mauvetopia – Value $12

This lip crayon wasn’t very moisturizing, but the color payoff was great. The color was pretty wearable for me, too! (Swatched in lower photo.)

ModelCo Illusion Lip Liner Lip Enhancer – Value $20

This turned out being my favorite item in the box. It’s a great neutral lip color for me – something I’ll use every day. The pigment is great, too.

Swatched below beneath the Lip Paint and Lip Crayon:

Verdict: Even though this month’s Lip Monthly bag was only 50% a hit for me, I still got two full-size lip products I like out of a $12.95 subscription box! This box has a value of about $46, too – not bad!

  1. Just got my first Lipmonthly bag and it’s just AWESOME!!!! I love all the products especially the Steve Laurant lip gloss, perfect for the season. I also love the Cargo Bronzer, very ideal for my skin tone. Will keep this monthly subscription for sure. Planning to upgrade my plan to annual subscription 🙂

  2. I had to cancel my membership. I love the idea of getting new lipstick every month. However everything they send is for a pale skin tone. So I usually could only use 1 item out if 4. That just isn’t value for me.

  3. I love LipMonthly products, but I just wish their lipstick catered to ALL skin tones. I’m African-American, and most of the colors they send really only work for pale ladies. I’d say I’m only able to wear about 1-2 products out of the bag each month, and usually I receive 4 items. I love the sub, but I hope they start sending products that cater to EVERYONE!

  4. I love MSA, but I’m shocked this is still reviewed as a good option for a sub. This sub was horrible for me. The kind of horrible that involves getting your credit card company involved. I was sent a 2 month old bag – with the labeling to prove it – for my 1st subscription. I emailed and was told as a new customer I should “appreciate what others have already loved receiving” – Wow! I asked for a refund or a current bag and was denied either. I then asked to cancel and never heard back. My credit card company came thru for me, but it was a pain. I wish I had looked at this company’s reviews on other websites before I signed up. Seriously, #BoycottLipMonthly is a thing. While sub’s are personal preference, I wouldn’t recommend this one to even a diehard lipstick junkie.

  5. Hi. I’m new here, does anyone want to refer me for LipMonthly

  6. Signed up for the Oct bag, didn’t get to customize anything due to website issues, and like others was part of the ‘delayed shipment’ excuse group. After finally receiving my bag I was very disappointed in the colors – thick dark burgundy and sheer ‘nude’ not to mention the fact that the company not only didn’t give warning that things were delayed but didn’t even give 5 items much less give a ‘we screwed up’ bonus item. Not great treatment for a new customer. Seems like there might be issues there so I cancelled before it got worse.

  7. I received my first Lip Monthly today. I emailed them last week and they said there was a delay in shipping.

I love the products that i received..all of them. Will keep this sub and see if I like the rest after Nov 1 customization.

  8. I signed up using the coupon. I have to say I am very disappointed so far. It is the 17th, no bag, no emails, no communication on delays, not following their own protocol. This makes me sad, as I love trying new lip products. 🙁

    • Same here. Still waiting. Wondering if I’m even going to get a bag, being that I haven’t received the shipping email lip monthly states that I should have already received.

  9. This Month had a big surprise on me. I loved ModelCo Lip Liner and the neutral shade works with every lip color so it’s amazing! The “Opulence” Lip Crayon it’s just great for girls who love darker color like me. Every month Lip Monthly has a great package and I think others should at least try their service before they decide to be or not to be. We could give comments and everything but till a girl tries it on her own skin she won’t know. Personally I love LipMonthly!

  10. I guess I’m in the minority, because I LOVE LipMonthly. I think it’s my favorite subs, but I just added four new ones so I need to give them at least 3 months to rate. It’s just a perfect match to my needs…all color cosmetics and most of them lip. I am looking forward to being able to select my shade. I would have loved the light purple color, but I got a dark color.

    • Hi Bonnie – Currently, our customization feature is still in beta that’s why only a few will be able to customize in October. But, by November, everyone will be able to do so on the first 5 days of the month or upon sign up. Thank you for your feedback! -Mila

      • Augh. Let me guess – it’s the NEW customers that get to customise their accounts. (At least that certainly appears to be the case as the customization feature shows on the LM site for new customers, not on the one for existing customers). Thanks for helping me to decide whether to renew my soon expiring subscription. It’s a definite no!

When will subscription companies realize that customers feel jilted when they are not all treated equally, and/or when loyalty is not rewarded?

        • Hi Beth – The customization feature is still in beta for this month so only a few will be able to do so but, by November, EVERYONE will be able to customize their bags on the first 5 days of the month or upon sign up. Thanks! -Mila

  11. I’m a subscriber but probably not for much longer. I hated the j cat lip and the dark lip color as well as the nail wraps. I subbed to get lip products, tho I knew it might occasionally include other makeup. Never thought they would send nail wraps. That’s a total waste for me. They need to up their game quick. Hopefully customization will help.

  12. This month was a miss for me – I gifted or tried and trashed all for items! But I kept the bag and it’s holding makeup in my purse. Still, I’m keeping the sub. October should be better, with the option to customize the color of a couple of items. I’ll probably keep Lip Monthly another few months, then let them go.

    • How or where r options to chose shade of products?

      • Hi Doodlebug – Customization feature is still in beta but, on November, everyone will be able to customize their bags on the first 5 days of the month or upon sign up. You just need to log in on your online account at Thanks! -Mila

    • Sorry to hear that. I’ve been subscribed for Lip Monthly and I am really enjoying the “taste” of everything. I would suggest you stay for a couple of months and then see if you still like it. It’s almost New Year so I think the products will be awesome. 🙂

  13. This was my first and last Lip Monthly bag. Hated every part of this part, save the liner. The J Cat is just a mess and my crayon was a Dubl Bubl light purple – who can wear that??

    • I put my Jcat in the frig as think it got hot with shipment. Seemed to have helped. I got that light purple crayon too and felt the same way. Hoping for better in coming months or I’ve considered cancelling too!

  14. oh my goodness that JCat lip paint is awful! When i subbed to Ipsy i remember i had a JCat item one month and it popped/broke inside the bag. Everything was goopy and sticky grossness. Nothing else was damaged so i didn’t reach out to ipsy, but i remember thinking as i cleaned everything up how terrible the texture was!

    • Goopy is definitely the word for that lip paint! Sorry to hear it got everywhere! 🙁

  15. This was my first Lip Monthly. I got a very dark lip paint (think Chanel Vamp) and a purply-pink lip crayon – neither of which suited me at all. Fortunately I was able to pass them on to one of the girls at work. The lip liner is great and I plan to play with the nail wraps when I am on holidays next week! It was an okay bag, value wise, but I would rather their was some choice or curation of the lip product colours.

    • Starting October 1, there *will* be an option to customize one or 2 of your monthly selections. 🙂

      • Good to know, thanks for the info!

    • The July box had a cute sunglasses design. Yes, J. Cat has been around for a while and has been featured in other sub boxes before. And yes, it is runny. :/
