One of the benefits of membership in The Microbrewed Beer of the Month Club is that they provide a really thorough guide to the beers you received, pictured here. It talks about the different microbreweries and their histories, plus it provides serving suggestions.
Steamboat IPA by Bent River Brewing Co., Moline, Illinois
Now on to the beers! This is an American IPA with a 6.8% alcohol content. It features hops from Warrior and Citra plus 2-Row, C-10, Honey Malt, and Carapilsner malts. I drank this one evening by itself and I thought it tasted pretty much like an American IPA should. It wasn't too hoppy or too sweet, and it was medium-bodied.
Paddle Wheel Pale Ale by Bent River Brewing Co., Moline, Illinois
This is an American Pale Ale with a 5% alcohol content. It features hops from Cascade, plus 2-Row, C-80, Extra Special, and White Wheat malts. I drank this beer with two friends and we all felt like it was a really smooth, accessible beer. Very pleasant. You might even call it friendly.
Jefferson Stout by Lazy Magnolia Brewing Company, Mississippi
This is a Milk Stout with a 5% alcohol content. It features High-alpha acid bittering hops, plus Munich, Caramel, Barley, and Chocolate malts. This stout was brewed with sweet potatoes, which I thought was completely brilliant. It turned out to be a little sweet for my tastes, but my husband really liked it.
Southern Hops'pitality IPA by Lazy Magnolia Brewing Company, Mississippi
This is an Amerian IPA with a 6% alcohol content. It features hops from Citra, Cascade, Centennial, Nugget, Simcoe, and Summit, plus 2-Row, Carapils, 40L, and 15L malts. Once again, the hoppiest beer wins my highest praise! I went through a long phase in which I thought the hoppier, the better, but lately I have gotten tired of IPAs that just taste like hops. Maybe my palate has evolved somewhat? In any case, this was the perfect amount of hops for me: a lot, but not too much.
Verdict: First of all, I know $42.95 seems like an awful lot to spend on a 12-pack! However, I think the true microbrew connoisseur would consider this a bargain over driving around the country to different microbreweries. In this regard, I think The Microbrewed Beer of the Month Club provides a valuable service. I enjoyed sampling the different beers, and I appreciate the variety of beers that was sent. I really loved the Hops'pitality, and I discovered a beer that I think anyone would enjoy in the Paddle Wheel Pale Ale.
