Shaffer The Julian Clutch - Retail Value Listed $195

This is an exclusive sized piece made for Luxor Box. (The standard version of this clutch is $198 and measures 12 by 11 inches open. This version measures 8 by 8 inches open. To me, it seems like that would warrant more than a $3 difference in price, but the smaller size is definitely useful and fit my iPhone plus a few essentials like lip balm, blotting sheets, and hand sanitizer.)

Here it is in my hand to give you a better sense of scale:

luxor-box-july-2016-in-hand

I am thoroughly impressed with the quality of the leather and craftsmanship of this piece. The size may be smaller than the original, but I feel confident that the quality stacks up evenly.

Here it is open:

And a closer look at the tassels:

The top inch and a half of the inside of the bag is also lined in leather, and the remaining lining is made from an organic cotton:

In general, I would say this is a bold, beautifully-made piece. It may not fit everyone's style, but I like that they pushed the envelope a bit with this piece.

(And as someone who wears a lot of black, it's nice to get a small pop of color from an accessory!)

Dartington Crystal Medium Crescent Clock - Value $85

This clock is packaged in a beautiful black box and ready to gift - the clock is even surrounded in satin!

I was initially a little torn on this item. On one hand, it is clearly a well-made, quality piece. On the other hand, it has a "corporate gift" feel to me. Not that that is necessarily a bad thing, but it just seemed a little out of place to me at first.

Here it is in action on my bookshelf:

I have to say, having it staged with a few other pieces, I like this clock. The transparent crystal is fun to play with and style with other pieces.

(I can't block the view of my POPSUGAR Missoni candle!) 🙂

luxor-box-july-2016-mask

Youth Corridor Hydrating Soothing Mask - Value $115

Yes!! I sampled Youth Corridor thanks to the latest Net-A-Porter Beauty Kit and fell in love with their RetinUltimate Transforming Gel. This mask is great as well. It's a gel you only have to wear for 5 minutes (I love a quick mask) and it left my skin feeling so smooth.

One of these days I'm going to have to break down and spend $$ on Youth Corridor items, but for now I'm so thrilled that I get a full-sized mask in this box!

Another box ready to gift!

luxor-box-july-2016-set

Graphic Image Jotter - Retail Value $40

Graphic Image Jotter Card Refill - Retail Value $3.75

Graphic Image Leather Wrap Pen - Retail Value $40

(FYI - today only Graphic Image is having a Christmas in July sale - 50% off everything in their store.)

luxor-box-july-2016-folio

Here is a look at the jotter. It's a leather case with an extra pocket for storing a few more notecards, too.

This isn't something that I think I would regularly use, but it will make a classy gift!

luxor-box-july-2016-pen

Here is a closer look at the pen.

luxor-box-july-2016-pen-action

I don't own many (any?) classy pens, so this is a nice addition to my desk.

Verdict: This box has a retail value of about $478. I think that value is great for a luxe box, and Luxor Box seems to do a good job at finding quality brands that subscribers like and sticking with them! I will use or gift everything in this box, and the value is definitely there, but I think the only hesitation I had when I first opened the box is that I really didn't see a theme connecting the items.

The clutch feels very on trend, whereas the Graphic Image and crystal clock pieces feel very classic. Maybe that's a good approach, though? Make sure all styles are covered? (And then the mask is just fabulous!)

Okay, I swapped for this clock, and I must be missing something, but how in the world do you set the time or change the battery?!

Nevermind, figured it out. I didn’t want to pull to hard on the clock face and break it, but apparently I just had to pull a little harder.

Leah

I’m laughing at myself because I looked at it when I first got it, thought “oooh, so pretty,” and never considered such practical matters! So you just pull hard on the front to do those things?

Luxor is by far my favorite box. I look forward to receiving it more than any of my other subscription boxes. Month after month they hit it out of the ballpark for me. Except this month. I was so disappointed with this entire box. My thoughts as I examined each item were as follows.

The purse: Yuk. Ugly color, I hate tassels. It’s too small. About all I can fit in it is my iphone and a gloss. Given the extra balk cause by those awful tassels, I’d rather just carry my phone in my hand.

The Mask: Well there another useless item. I can’t use it since I have super sensitive skin and everything but water causes me to breakout. If I wanted masks and creams and the like I would sign up for a beauty subscription. Please Luxor, no beauty items.

Graphic Image Jotter: my first thought was, “What the heck is it?” When i finally did figure out what it was, into the useless pile it went. I have an phone app I use for notes. Who carries paper and pen these days?

The Clock: This was the only item that I didn’t hate. It is just ok for me. Good quality but as others said it’s rather corporate. I thought to myself “Did I win this as an award from work?” It nice enough to put on a shelf somewhere which I will do. However, it will soon fade onto oblivion as it will get little notice because it so boring.

So for me this box was a total miss. I’ve always had faith that Luxor would deliver top quality items that I’ll enjoy. I’m a realist and I know that there will be items I don’t love in boxes, however, to have such an expensive box be such an utter failure is a bit concerning. I will definitely be watching this box with caution before deciding to renew. I’m really hoping this is a fluke and not a new trend.

It’s so interesting to hear other people’s perspectives. Truly, what’s one man’s trash is another’s treasure. I love beauty items in Luxor Box and I love pretty paper things (I don’t even have a smartphone!). I don’t like food items because I only eat kosher so they’re useless for me (seriously, I have three food items from various boxes sitting in my room; I don’t want to dump them but I can’t use them!). I don’t work in a corporate environment so I don’t realize when things are corporate-looking! (I agree with you on the clutch though. It felt really soft and was much better quality than the Shaffer LA bag in Box of Style, but I have no use for it. I sold it. Actually I sold both this week 🙂 )

So glad you responded here as well as it went to my junk mail. I will check postage on Monday . I responded by email as well, so you may check your junk mail if you don’t see it.

I’m curious about the clock. The website calls it crystal, but real crystal is heavier than glass, so one this size would be very heavy. Like glass, it’s also easy to break or shatter, and no one has complained about this that I see.

I suspect it’s acrylic. (Acrylic won’t yellow in the sun, and is more scratch-resistant than plastic.) Nothing wrong with that! I saw a gallery exhibit once of acrylic pieces and loved them.

Nelliebelle1197

No, it is not acrylic. It is crystal and you could likely get rid of those pesky burglars pretty easily if you threw it. Darlington is a crystal objects company.

I think I would gladly pay the $3 difference to get a bigger , more practical clutch. Pity.

At first I was a bit confused and disappointed upon opening the box. It felt a bit scattered. The crystal clock felt irritating at first glance. Usually this is one of my three very favorite and very anticipated boxes. After seeing the clock arranged in your photo, I’m super excited to place it in our lake house in my spare bedroom. It will be perfect there and not work-oriented in the least. Never grow tired of luxurious masks and face creams. Although truth be told I would have rather received a cream. Love the navy pen. Note card thingy will sit in my home desk drawer. But the whole wrapped arrangement of these 2 items was cute. The purse is fun and a decent size. I’m not a clutch person, but I like that I would feel fashion forward carrying this. WHYYYYYYY THIS COLOR???!! I’m super over this color. Navy? Tan? Red? Almost anything but this same tired neon blue I’ve received from so many boxes. It makes my eyes pained bc I like the style. Wonder if I can have it professionally dyed black at a leather shop? That would make all my planets align. Not swapping anything so far, except MAYBE the purse bc of the color.

Overall nice quality–just an odd assortment, but nice box. I’m pleased. Just, please, calling allllll sub boxes… Please retire this dang color.

This was my first box with Luxor. I put most of my items up for swap. I love the jotter and pen but the purse is a miss for me because I think once you put things inside it it’s going to be a big lumpy mess. I am a huge purse fan and I absolutely love the color of it though. I agree that the clock is beautiful and very corporate but it just seems lopsided to me I feel like I’m going to have to tilt my head every time to look at it. I’m Meh with the mask. Not sure if I’m gonna keep up my subscription with this one

Amanda

I enjoy this box mostly for the quality of the items. They all feel expensive.

I do have a slight issue though, I did not receive either of the masks listed but instead received a daily hydrating creme. I was going to complain, but when I checked the website the RV is $100 more than the masks! Did anyone else get this?

This was my first Luxor box and I loved it. The clutch is perfect for a lippie, phone, and a cash & card holder. The blotter works well for me to take with me when I lecture to jot down questions to be dealt with later. The clock goes nicely on my work desk. I used the mask last night (I got the same one as Liz) and may be in love with it.

This is my first Luxor box and I was very impressed. I also ordered the petite box and was thrilled that jotter pad, pen, and mask were inside. My regular box had red leather for the jotter and pen, my petite box jotter and pen were blue. This was perfect, my sister gets the red ones and I get to keep blue. I swapped the clutch for the Greta purse from the Rachel Zoe box because I am not a clutch person. I really did enjoy this box and am looking forward to future Luxor boxes. ?

Well. I read quite a few negative posts about this box so was prepared to be disappointed . . . but wasn’t! Loved this box. Clutch is gorgeous and a great color. Everything is useful elegant and not up for swap!

Jennifer

Are these still available?

Tamara

Nope. But you can find all of these things on the swap board!

Jennifer

Thank you.

This was my least favorite Luxor box too and I have been subscribed since the beginning. The clutch is a little small and can we get something other than a mask. My pen is not as nice as Liz’s. As for the clock. maybe it does look a little like a corporate gift, but almost all crystal clocks do, even Waterford and other brands. Unless they gave us a cuckoo clock, almost any crystal clock would be a little “corporate gift”. Since I am locked into the $95 price, I will stick it out for a few more months. Here’s hoping for more diverse items and brands in the next box. Would love some more MSC items though.

Or they could just not send a crystal clock. That might work too, lol. I actually am using mine at work and it’s lovely on my conference table.

Marie

Me too

misanthropic789

This box was a miss for me taste-wise. I am right with you on the “corporate” thing with the clock (I actually have a crystal clock thank-you gift from a corporate event) and have no use for the Jotter (I carry my #bujo everywhere). I would have LOVED the clutch in the larger size, but this is just too small for me to use for anything. I’m going to give the mask a try because, well, why not. But of all the Luxor boxes I have received (and I subscribed at the very beginning) this was the one had the fewest items I will use. Having said that, everything is terrific quality and packaged beautifully. I’m not dropping them anytime soon, but I hope the next box is more to my personal taste.

Reply ButtonReply

EC

I think the box card listed the leather jotter as $15 not $40. At least I’m pretty sure mine was listed as that since my girls like to play guess the retail value and they guessed the price exactly on the first try.

I liked the box as usual but don’t have much need for an electric blue clutch. I do like the clock and it will work well in my office at work. I agree it has a bit of a generic professional gift vibe so I plan to use it somewhere it fits best. I was very excited to see the mask since I also fell in love with the gel from the Net-A-Porter box a few weeks ago. I also love nice pens and notepads so that set is a win for me too. All said I’ve enjoyed my Luxor sub this year but I think it’s time to cancel. While the items are always lovely the repeat brands and less than useful inclusions make it hard to justify the cost going forward.

Reply ButtonReply

Bev

the jotter is actually $40. I purchased another for a friend with the Christmas in July special.

I love the clutch! I wear a lot of blue, and the size is great — it’ll hold my phone, a credit card and license, plus my inhaler and a lippie. Ever since I tore my rotator, I’ve grown accustomed to carrying a clutch instead of a bigger purse; this one will definitely be a star in my collection. I got a moisturizing mask, which I’ll definitely use, The clock will look good on our mantle. I can always use an extra pen and paper set — and I like that it has its own little bag to keep it all together. So while this isn’t my all-time favorite Luzor box, I will definitely use everything,

Nicole

This is the first Luxor box that does’t make me do a happy dance … The clock and the blotter will make great gifts and I hope to find the clutch a new home with someone who will carry it! My stuff is listed on the swap page if anyone is interested 🙂

I wasn’t sure about this box when I first saw the spoilers, but once I had it in hand I realized I would use every item. I received the beta hydroxy mask (yay!) but was totally bummed when I took it out of the box and saw that it had broken at the neck. I contacted Luxor and in less than 24 hours, they had contacted the company and then me to let me know that a replacement was being sent. Even if I wasn’t in love with everything right away, their customer service will have me signed up for the long haul!!

Reply ButtonReply

Leah

Andrea, have you tried the mask yet? I got the same variety and I’d love to know more about it. My skin is pretty sensitive so if it burns your face off or something, I know to stay away!

Reply ButtonReply

Andrea

I did try it and I can say I did not feel a thing! There was no tingle or burning sensation like some (I’m looking at you GLamGlow!) But I will say that I was very aware that I was wearing it. I put on a thin layer and left it on for about ten minutes. At the end, I was ready to wipe it off, if that makes sense. I’m not sure if it made a HUGE difference, but it was a nice little luxury. I would try a test patch on the inside of your arm just to make sure, but I found it to be pretty gentle. Hope that helps!

Love hearing great customer care stories!! 🙂

Love_Cleo

Liz, the clock looked like the most boring thing… too formal and sterile, no personality. Until I saw it on your bookshelf! 🙂 NOW it looks like a fun, young, multi-possibility item. You are so good with photos!

I don’t subscribe to this box, but if I did I would be pissed. The clock is the only item I would want. Everything else is so blah.

Reply ButtonReply

Leah

I love this box! I’m going to sell the bag (hopefully) because I don’t use clutches, but I LOVE the clock (although now that you say “corporate gift,” I can’t unsee that). I’ve been trying to buy one of those Anna Cele clocks from the Neiman Marcus box since it came out. Now I don’t feel the urge for that anymore. I love the old-fashioned notes and pen. I’m unsure about the mask and I think it’s a little strange that they sent a mask two boxes in a row. I think I got a different variety than you did. Yours is for sensitive skin, I think? Mine is an exfoliator type, I think? (I’m at work and don’t have it in front of me.) I would’ve preferred your variety…

Overall, I like it enough to keep my subscription.

Thanks, Liz. As always, knocked it out of the park. Happy to see the Missoni candle went to a good home! I didnt get this box, but do like it better now that I see your pics and review (versus the spoilers from last week).
