Serena if you contact customer service they’ll send you a separate box if it wouldn’t let you select extra titles. They had to do it for me for two months in a row.

I live in the area of Brooklyn where Modern Lovers takes place so I have to get that one 🙂

I’m torn between Shrill and The Veins of the Ocean. I love following Lindy West online. At the same time, Roxane Gay has become one of my favorite writers, and I’m curious about her recommendation. Meanwhile, I haven’t even gotten to my May selection, I Let You Go. My priority-to-read stack on the bedroom chair is getting precariously tall.

I am LOVING Shrill. Listening to it on audiobook right now but I might need to own it too. BUT I am obsessed with Roxanne Gay and trust her so I got The Veins of the Ocean. Brinda if it makes you feel better I am months behind..

I ordered shrill and selected Enchanted. Lindy in a good writer & funny, and makes a lot of people angry, couldn’t pass the book up.

After an admittedly pretty quick scan of the Amazon descriptions and reviews, it appears that this month’s selection is very women focused…I read comments like “book for feminists”, “explores female friendships”, “examines the mother/daughter relationship”, etc. – that’s fine for me but I wonder if these options will appeal to their male subscribers.

I’m a woman and this month’s choices don’t really appeal to me except for possibly Enchanted Islands. Maybe I have masculine reading tastes but reviewing a book as “perfect for feminist fans of ” means it’s pretty much a no for me unless a friend recommends it. There are some female authors that I love but the action and adventure I like to escape into generally seems to be geared more towards men, maybe because 95% of my coworkers are women and anything that reminds me of break room gossip is not an escape.

Yeah, because God forbid men read a book about women. Give me a break.

My goodness. I didn’t mean to inspire such a negative reaction. I’m not opposed to this sort of genre whatsoever I was just surprised at the consistency of the theme. I feel that BOTM normally does a tremendous job of offering a pretty diverse selection but I did not get that sense this time.

It turns out my book group actually felt the I same. Every month the coordinator ask the members to submit their top two choices of BOTM selections and she sets up meetings for any of the books with more than 6 votes (the group has 20 people so most months it’s easy to get enough interest in at least four out of the five of the books as there is usually something for everyone in the BOTM offerings). This month only 2 of the books received 6 votes, which has never happened before. The group noted the lack of diversity in the options.

So again, I did not mean to imply that men can’t or won’t read books about feminists, or mother-daughter relationships, or what have you. I would have made the same comment if four of the options were about military history. Not all books appeal to all people and BOTM seemed to be missing their usual diversity in their options this month. My apologies to anyone I offended when I noted what appeared to me to be a lack of diversity.

right??

Seriously. Even as recently as February, all five books were written by men and were about men, as far as I could see. Hey, that’s okay, though; women will be able to relate to it because “dude stuff” is the default, right?

Betty

The mystery book is written by a man and doesn’t seem female focused.

Their website has NOT been working well for me lately. I’ve had to change my password multiple times, can’t access my account, and all kinds of other issues. Anyone else?

Yep…May is still up even though they have a June book in my Que.

Is it after midnight to you? I know that for me the new selections don’t load until it is after midnight for me (Which is in two hours).
