WODBOM
4.3 overall rating

WODBOM stands for “Workout of the Day – Box of the Month” and is a subscription box designed for CrossFit enthusiasts, by CrossFit enthusiasts.  (Although, I don’t think you absolutely have to be into CrossFit to get something out of this box, as long as you are interested in working out!)

This box was sent to us for review purposes. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

wodbom-may-2016-dice

WODDice by PhysEd – Value $34.99

This set is a cool idea.  These dice are a way to randomize your workout and are designed with the same methodology taught in Level 1 CrossFit certification courses.  This set has six dice, each of which is 12-sided.  Die 1 is “task or time,” die 2 is “number & type of movements,” die 3 is bodyweight movements, die 4 is weighted movements, die 5 is mono structural movements, and die 6 is for number of reps.  You will need to go to www.gophysed.com to download instructions because there are a lot of abbreviations on these (out of necessity, since each die face is pretty small).

Epic Mountain Medley Trail Mix (2.25 oz) – Value $5

This trail mix has beef in it so I will be passing it along to someone at work who will appreciate it.  The jerky is from grass-fed beef and the mix is designed to balance sweet and savory flavors.

Next Level Apparel Born Primitive Shirt (men’s M) – Value $27

Apparel is always appreciated (though we asked for a women’s small for me and ended up with a men’s medium; WODBOM confirmed I will receive the correct size in next month's box. I can use this for cardio days but not lifting or kettlebell days when the bagginess would get in the way).  Born Primitive was founded by an active-duty military family and supports military and firefighter charities.  I also like that on their site, they show photos of not just men but also women doing strength-training activities!

wodbom-may-2016-supplement

Viter Energy Vitermints Wintergreen Flavor (0.63 oz) – Value $3.33

These are making the rounds in fitness boxes; I got them in GymBag not so long ago.  These are sugar free and made in the USA.  They have caffeine and B vitamins for energy.  I am taking this tin to work for those days when I need a bit of an afternoon pick-me-up.  (I work out at night so I don’t want caffeine then or I won’t be able to sleep later…)

Sierrasil Joint Formula 14 (90 capsules) – Value $32.99

This has a lot of minerals that are supposed to help joint function.  It’s vegetarian which is awesome. I have been looking for a joint supplement as I have had a bit of knee trouble in the past and I can’t take regular glucosamine and chondroitin because they generally come from animal sources.  It’s too soon to tell if this is having an effect but I definitely appreciate getting a full size bottle to try.

Spider Chalk (250 mL) – Value $19.95

This is also something that will definitely be useful to me, though perhaps not in a CrossFit setting.  I like to work out with kettlebells a couple of times a week.  I have been slowly increasing the weight of the kettlebells.  But I don’t like to wear gloves (I have very small hands and even size “small” weightlifting gloves are often too big) and sometimes my hands get sweaty.  I don’t want to launch a 25-lb kettlebell across the room (or drop it on my foot!).  So this is a nice compromise – gives me a good grip without wearing gloves.  And the mess really is almost nonexistent.

Verdict:  I calculated a value of about $123.26 for the May WODBOM.  Other than the WODDice, I would say that although the items in this box could certainly be useful for CrossFit enthusiasts, most of the items could be used by anyone who is into working out, even if not specifically doing CrossFit.  The value is also incredible, at over three times the cost of the subscription.
