Shtrands Subscription Box Review + Coupon – March 2016

Shtrands- March 2016- Shipping Box

SHTRANDS is a subscription box that sends you customized hair care regimens from a team of hairstylists and cosmetic chemists every two months. The hair care regimen includes 4 full sized cleansing, conditioning and styling products. Products included in the box should last you two months. At any point in the subscription you can choose to receive a completely new regimen or a mix of new products and ones you have already received and loved.

I like how the creators had the purple confetti to greet you when you opened the box. My box arrived a little beat up due to the postal service but all products were intact when they arrived.

SHTRANDS-March 2016- canvas bag

I really like the canvas bag! It will be great to reuse when traveling since it’s so durable.

This box was sent to us for review purposes. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).

Before SHTRANDS sent me the box to review I filled out a hair questionnaire. I personally believe that if you want a service that is truly customizable you should have to fill out a questionnaire. My bag will probably be different than others- I have long, fine curly/wavy non-color treated hair. I also said I will use non-organic products but it’s a plus if it is organic.

The Subscription Box: SHTRANDS

Cost: $59.00 + free shipping for 2 month plan, $149 + free shipping for 6 month plan (bag delivered every other month), or $295.00 + free shipping for 12 month plan  (bag delivered every other month). You receive one free hair care regimen (4 products) with 12 month plan purchase.

COUPON: Use code HAIRLOVE to save 15% off any subscription!

Products: Customized hair care regimen: 4 full size cleansing, conditioning and styling products.

Ships to: Continental US only

SHTRANDS- March 2016- welcome card front

Each SHTRANDS bag comes with a welcome card. This is a picture of the two creators and by looking at how beautiful their hair is I feel confident using their hair product picks!

My jaw dropped when I saw this was hand-written- I loved it! It is detailed instructions on how to use each product they picked for you.  It really makes the whole experience feel more personal!

Abba Volume Shampoo – 8 oz. FULL SIZE! $17.00

I fell in love with this shampoo! I normally buy all my hair products from drugstores so I’m used to that type of quality. This shampoo was so thick and lathered wonderfully, I’m hooked. I also did notice a slight difference in volume after I dried it! I want to buy the Abba volume conditioner now, especially since it is 100% vegan and natural.

Tela Beauty Organics Conditioner in Measure– 5 oz. FULL SIZE! $22.00 (on sale, regularly $32.00)

This is a Tela limited edition conditioner exclusively for SHTRANDS in Measure. I wanted to like this so much, I really did but honestly it was terrible. The bottle itself is a very sleek design but not practical. If you have long hair like me (goes mid-way down my back) you don’t want to have to pump 10 times to get a good amount of conditioner. Although I could get passed the design I couldn’t get passed the smell. It was the strongest mint smell I have ever smelled, however if you enjoy mint then it probably wouldn’t bother you. I will be gifting this conditioner!

Thermal Hair Glaze by Head Room Productions– 4 oz. FULL SIZE! $18.00

I have never heard of hair glaze before so I was excited to try it. I use Moroccan oil before I style my hair so I assumed it was similar. I didn’t exactly dislike this product but I also didn’t fall in love with it. I used the glaze before I put mousse in my hair and dried so that might be why it didn’t look as good as it was supposed to. I will have to try it prior to straightening my hair before I give it away.

Professional Sebastian Whipped Cream– 5.3 oz. FULL SIZE! $19.95

When I saw there was mousse in the bag I was ecstatic. I am always on the lookout for a new mousse that will define my curls without looking crunchy or wet  #curlyhairprobs. This mousse is lightweight, works awesome and has an addicting smell, so this is a keeper! I also like the dispenser because it looks like a real whipped cream bottle.

Verdict: I’m a fan of SHTRANDS after receiving this bag! This was a very customized hair regimen and I discovered a new shampoo and mousse so I’m pleased with it! I would recommend this to anyone that wants to switch up their hair routine, wants to try salon products at a lower cost or needs direction when it comes to hair care. It’s so convenient to have the products hand selected for you based off a survey and delivered to your door. I estimate the total cost of products included to be $76.95 and that’s including the sale price for the conditioner. The total cost of products is slightly higher than the cost of subscription so it was a good deal this month.

What do you think about March’s SHRANDS box? Did anyone else subscribe this month?

  1. I lol’ed at #curlyhairprobs I hear you! I have medium, thin, but thick, super curly, but coarse and then fine hair. How? Because it just is. It is a ton of hair but when you actually wrap your hands around it it’s fine and not as bulky as you thought but I use a lot of conditioner when I condition it and a lot of other product. I wash my hair maybe twice a week so this seems like it comes out way too much for me. I could see this being for me if they did it every couple of months.
I am really keen on it though because it’s so customized and it seems like they really are working toward an individual experience for each box. That’s super cool to me!

    • Hi Veronica,

Thank you for your interest in Shtrands. I am the founder of Shtrands and just wanted to let you know that now customers can chose their delivery frequency (every 2 or every 3 months). We keep the 6 month plan (with delivery every 2 months) because is our best value and very popular plan. Whatever plan you choose, you can just switch at any point to another plan that fits best to you.

  2. Great review! Really liking the look of this sub and the owners seem like such sweet women! If i wasn’t so broke with the new baby I would totally sign up for this. My hair has changed so much and I’d love to try new products but since my hair is so long samples don’t cut it and I can’t drop money for full size in for fear they won’t work.

  3. I just started this subscription. I have fine, thick hair that’s colored (Galaxy) and is waist-length. I wash it twice a week. What I liked best about the questionnaire was that in addition to the “usual” questions, there was a space provided for additional information. After filling out the questionnaire and subscribing, I received an e-mail from the owner explaining that although they usually send out the first package within a day or two, because of the length and thickness of my hair they wanted to wait a week or so because they were waiting on a certain conditioner that was bigger than most, since I use far more conditioner than shampoo. I was so grateful and impressed with this level of personalization that I am pleased I signed up for 6 months and can certainly see continuing for the foreseeable future with this subscription. I am finishing up a shampoo and conditioner I had already started, but am looking forward to starting the ones Shtrands sent me. I have already started using a Lock-In Treatment for color-treated hair they sent, and I like the results. They also sent a leave-in conditioner that I will start when I start the shampoo/conditioner.

    • Thank you so much, Mimi! Cant wait to hear your feedback! We will send you an email close to the second delivery to ask you if you would like any repeats from the regimen, or prefer to receive different products.

  4. I love mint scents! I have fine wavy/curly, frizzy hair a few inches past my shoulders. Since it’s so fine and not as long as yours, it sounds like I should look into that conditioner.

These are full-size products from what I can tell, but I actually prefer trying samples before spending that much money… especially because I usually only wash my hair twice a week so my products last forever and I have a huge stash already.

  5. Great review Nancy!

  6. Thank you so much for your honest review, Nancy! Great point about Tela’s conditioner pump design for long hair; didn’t think about that. We will incorporate your feedback in order to serve better our customers. ..thats why we really appreciate these reviews; we learn from them!
    Thank you again!
