Akibento is a monthly subscription box for anime & manga enthusiasts. Aki is short for Akihabara, a district in Tokyo famous for their anime and manga goods. Akibento sends "authentic and original figures, collectibles, manga, apparel, accessories and more" with a guaranteed exclusive t-shirt and $60+ in value each month.

My Subscription Addiction paid for this box. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

Akibento-March-2016-Card1

Akibento-March-2016-Card2

This month's theme is Mecha. The info card is so creative! Each item is arranged in a section of a bento box. For example, the Akibento pin is located in the soy sauce partition!

Akibento-March-2016-Tshirt

Exclusive Mecha Shirt - $12?

This month's exclusive red t-shirt features two mecha suits in heated battle. It's a normal Gildan unisex cotton shirt. I like the "raw edges" look on the design.

Akibento-March-2016-Figurines

Evangelion: 3.0 Assault Action Q Action Figure - $7

Subscribers received 1 of 6 Assault Kingdom or Evangelion action figures. I received the Evangelion 3.0 02'γ model. Assembly is required! It's interesting how Evangelion 3.0 mecha suits look considerably slimmer than those from other shows. All the sites I visited listed this as "sold out" so it may be a discontinued item. If this action figure series is discontinued, wouldn't that make the items worth more in the long run?

Mobile Suit Gundam Build Model - Guncannon - $4.36

Subscribers received 1 of 5 Mobile Suit Gundam models, and I received #2 Guncannon. These are apparently made of rubbery pieces instead of the hard plastic kind. I've never seen the Gundam series so I may pass this on to a friend who'll appreciate the model!

Akibento Mecha Pin - $1?

The monthly Akibento pin features several cute mecha figures. I wonder if one of them is a Transformer. Actually, do Transformers even count as mecha?

Akibento-March-2016-Poster

Mecha Poster - $10?

This is a large glossy print of four giant mecha suits. Unfortunately I have no clue which mecha is from what show. If anyone can identify them please let me know!

Akibento-March-2016-Towel

Code Geass Suzaku Kururugi Bath Towel - $16.95

Subscribers get 1 of 6 towels from Code Geass, Gurren Lagann, or Gundam. Luckily I got the Suzaku towel from Code Geass, one of my favorite anime of all time. It's a good thing, too, since this is the most valuable item in the box. If you have never watched Code Geass, I wholeheartedly recommend it. There's fantasy, action/adventure, drama, tragedy, school comedy, and mecha, all tightly woven into 50 episodes.

Verdict: I thought this month was all right, but only because I'm not familiar with these classic mecha anime. The estimated total value this month is around $51.31. It doesn't reach the $60+ value that Akibento promises, but that's probably just a discrepancy with how I valued things. If it wasn't for the luck of the draw on the Suzaku Kururugi towel, I probably wouldn't have enjoyed the box as a whole. However, I think this would be a good subscription for someone who's looking for collectible models or figurines. Since each month's theme is different, here's to looking forward to next month!

The red mech is the Gurren Lagann (from Gurren Lagann).

On the poster, the top purple one is EVA 1 from Neon Genesis Evangelion & the bottom one is Wing Gundam or Wing Zero Gundam from Gundam Wing. At least I think so.

Also forgot to mention, I also recommend Code Geass! A well balanced and entertaining anime.

In regards to the poster, I think the white and gold one on the right is the Mecha used by Suzaku in Code Geass.

Ah it could be Suzaku’s Lancelot! Thanks, looks like it’s time to rewatch the show 🙂
