The box came with this full-color foldout card featuring more information about the items and brands included in the box.

CAUSEBOX Subscription Box Review Winter 2015 - basket

SoloHope Estrella Basket – Value $32

I couldn’t find the exact same color on the SoloHope site, but the size sounds right for the one I linked to above.  SoloHope is a nonprofit company based in Georgia, but the products are handcrafted by artisans in Honduras, who use the proceeds to help provide for their families.

Here’s a side view.

CAUSEBOX Subscription Box Review Winter 2015 - candle

Bridgewater Candle Company Sweet Grace Mingle Candle – Value $20

This isn’t a holiday scent but it is a little wintry (the description on the Bridgewater site says “passionate fruits,” “sparkling tea,” and “classic patchouli”).  I guess I can see where they get that.  At any rate, this is a really good candle.  My kitchen was kind of smelly (I may or may not have had 15 dog food cans full of water soaking on the counter because I was lazy and didn’t rinse them out…) and I lit this.  I could even smell it upstairs!  Every candle purchase provides three meals to children in international orphanages.

CAUSEBOX Subscription Box Review Winter 2015 - necklace

Landmine Design Seven Bead Necklace – Value $34 (?)

This is an exclusive for CAUSEBOX so I had to guess at the value based on similar pieces in their shop.  The photo on the left is the artisan who made the necklace.  These necklaces are made in a village in Cambodia that has the largest concentration of landmines anywhere in the world.  Giving jobs to the women who make the necklaces helps them escape the dangers of human trafficking.

CAUSEBOX Subscription Box Review Winter 2015 - passport

The Root Collective Passport Holder – Value $30 (?)

This is another CAUSEBOX exclusive so the price is a total guess.  I don’t actually have a valid passport (mine expired years ago) but this would make a great gift for someone about to go on an international trip.  It also came with a $45 promo code for a pair of Root Collective shoes.  Unless you happen to have very small feet (there are some size 5s in their sale section), you will have to pay something out of pocket, so I didn’t include the value of the coupon.  Root Collective shoes are made from handwoven Guatemalan fabric.

CAUSEBOX Subscription Box Review Winter 2015 - serum

One Love Organics Gardenia + Tea Antioxidant Body Serum (4 oz) – Value $39

I didn’t know body serum was a thing – it may be one of the only beauty products I don’t have 20 of.  This has a definite floral scent.  It took a bit of time to absorb into my skin and one of my cats really wanted to lick it off my arms.  One Love Organics is manufactured in Georgia in an ECOCERT licensed facility (one of only 10 in the US).

Alter Eco Dark Almond Organic Chocolate Bar – Value $3.99

After this month’s Escape Monthly and Yogi Surprise Holiday Bonus Box, this is my 9th chocolate bar in December.  So I hope you will understand when I say I haven’t opened this yet!  But I’ve had other Alter Eco chocolate bars and know they are good.  Alter Eco chocolate is organic and fair trade and their ingredients are sustainably sourced.

Verdict: I calculated a value of about $160 for the Winter 2015 CAUSEBOX.  This definitely meets the promoted value of the box.  Even if some of the values are a little inaccurate (I did have to estimate on a few), you are at least getting your money’s worth, and you know that your purchase is supporting good causes around the world.  I thought the box contained a nice collection of food, beauty, lifestyle, and home items, and I will be able to use or gift most everything (I’m even thinking of using the shoe coupon since I am in need of a pair of neutral flats!).

These guys have the worst customer service ever. I emailed them repeatedly, messaged them on Facebook, and it took me posting a public message on their Facebook wall to get a response. I was so upset that I asked for a refund on my annual subscription with them today.

Just an FYI, if you are thinking of subscribing.

Hello, I just wanted to add my 2 cents to this. I did have a circumstance with the December box where they had a glitch with their system and my box was sent to the wrong place. It took several emails and FB posts for this to be fixed and I got it quite late (beginning of January) and was unable to use for Christmas gifts as I was hoping. That being said, I believe so much in the mission of this project that I am willing to forgive something like this. They are also a new company and still working out some details. The situation was resolved and the box was amazing. They say it is for the younger woman but I love it at age 40 and my mother loves hers at age 70. I am really impressed with what they have created and wish them success with this.

I’ve actually had good customer service from them. They accidentally sent me two boxes in December. When I let them know by e-mail, they got back to me within 2 days and sent me a prepaid label to send the duplicate box back.

I loved this box. My favorite piece was the necklace. It’s beautiful and the story behind Landmine Designs made me want to go purchase something to support them. I will be shopping there for myself and for gifts. The candle smells lovely and the body oil does, too. I won’t eat the chocolate but someone else will be happy to have it.

I love the basket! The necklace is gorgeous, too! The candle smells wonderful. I haven’t looked at the shoe site yet, but will soon.

Is the Root Collective code a general promo code or an individual coupon? I’d love to get a pair of shoes, but nobody has listed the code on the swap site. My swap profile link is attached to my name on this comment!

Ragan

It’s a general code, I just covered it up because I felt funny about listing it and taking advantage of a charity like that.

Just to clarify, The Root Collective is a for profit business and not a charity. They believe in the good that for profit can do in scaling artisan businesses, as well as non profit, which has its place as well. They give back SO MUCH to the communities that they work in! I have a bunch of their shoes and love every pair!

Ake

Okay. That makes sense. Thanks!

Ann

Yes the One Love body serum! I have been wanting to try it since I saw it in Popsugar and then Rachel Zoe!

I got my box last week and was able to score a free pair of shoes! They were on sale for $35 and I had to pay five or $6 shipping. They’ve already shipped out and my package is expected tomorrow!
