Love Yourself First Now (LYF-now) is a new subscription box for young women ages 14 and up, intended as a monthly reminder to love themselves! What a nice idea!

This box was sent to us for review purposes. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

Love Yourself First Now Subscription Box Review September 2015 - inside

The Products: 4-6 fun products designed to inspire young women to love themselves

Ships to: US for sure, all other countries listed, probably at an additional charge

Love Yourself First Now Subscription Box Review September 2015 - info

This is the info card that was included in the package, detailing the items in the box. This month's theme is "All Eyes are on You Gorgeous!"

Love Yourself First Now Subscription Box Review September 2015 - tweezers

Glitzy Tweezers - Value $5

When I was a teenager, I would have loved receiving this set of tweezers, but more importantly, the instructions on what to do with them! I think learning to take care of oneself (including unwanted hair management) is an important part of loving yourself and powering through to womanhood.

(I am relying on the information provided on the card for these tweezers.)

Love Yourself First Now Subscription Box Review September 2015 - mary-kay

Mary Kay @ Play Baked Eyeshadow Trio in Neapolitan - Value $13

Cute eyeshadow! I think Mary Kay is a great choice for young women because their makeup always looks nice and pretty natural.

Love Yourself First Now Subscription Box Review September 2015 - lash-curler

Kleancolor Wonder Eyelash Curler - Value $10 (on the manufacturer's website for $1.99)

I wish I had learned to curl my eyelashes as a youngster! This is another fun skill for young women to learn so that they can look their best and be confident.

Love Yourself First Now Subscription Box Review September 2015 - gloss-mascara

Kleancolor Delicious Lip Gloss with Shea Butter - Value $6

This lip gloss smells super fruity, but it definitely is not delicious! It's soft and moisturizing, and goes on clear. Perfect for teens, especially when trying to emphasize the eyes, as this month's theme suggests.

Kleancolor Girls Talk Volumizing Mascara - Value $10 ($5 on ebay)

This is a simple, inexpensive mascara for young women. I think mascara does so much to enhance the eyes! Lip gloss and mascara were the first things my mom let me wear when I was a teenager. Good call, Mom!

Love Yourself First Now Subscription Box Review September 2015 - bag

Makeup bag - Value $6

I'm using the value given on their info card for this item as well. I think it's a great touch to also provide a nice little starter makeup bag to keep all these goodies in! Plus it's really a cute and girly one.

The Verdict: I would really need to see more boxes from LYF-now before I could make a proper evaluation of their service overall. I think this was a great makeup starter kit for teens, and it aims to teach them some of the basics of taking care of yourself. Makeup can be really helpful in trying to feel better about oneself, especially in those confusing and critical teen years. The value of the items at sale prices is about $42, so that's terrific for the $29 cost of the box. On the other hand, I think beauty is only one small part of life, and it's really important for young women to know that their self-worth should not be wholly derived from their appearance. I just don't know if all the boxes are beauty-themed or not. I would love to see other boxes contain things that help young women love themselves spiritually, mentally, and emotionally by inspiring them to build skills and better themselves in the many other areas of their lives.

While I don’t love all the products in this box I don’t have a problem with the theme If you look at the subscription as a whole. Last month included a journal and affirmation cards, I think if they keep having different themes each month focusing on different aspects of a typical teenagers life it would make for a well rounded subscription. I have two teenage girls but I think it would be better a better fit for younger teens 12-15 year olds. I like that the products they included were focused on bringing out their natural beauty, so many girls at that age wear tons of makeup that is completely not age appropriate. While the products aren’t high quality they are appropriate for the age they are targeted for. Most girls at that age care about how they look and if they feel good about themselves if will help them feel more confident in general. Sorry that was long but overall a good idea but not great quality products.

This months theme is “all eyes are on you”. The focus is to sudtlely enhance your natural beauty. The informational card shares this concept and refers a professional website to get a tutorial on how to apply makeup and accessorize. Most girls are lost on where to begin. Please visit @lyfnow to see posts of lasts months bob and contents. A few items were a set of affirmation cards and a nice journal with direction on how to use. Each box has a theme to guide young women to love themselves first. Thank you for all your comments it helps LYFnow move in a positive direction.

The message of this box seems to be “you aren’t pretty enough, teenager,” and that really bums me out. Based on this I would definitely not give this to any teen in my life. I love makeup, but I don’t like to see it branded as the key to self worth.

Just awful. As others have stated- you can get Kleancolor at Daiso for $1.50, so the pricing on that is WAY inflated. Even if you take everything else at their value, you barely get over the price of the box and I’m just going to guess that bag is not worth $6.

Couple that with the “message” of the box vs. the contents and this box really rubs me the wrong way. I was hoping for encouraging books or mirror clings with positive messages. Maybe a journal or even pampering bath & body stuff would be good. But all of this is focused on your appearance. Just awful.

Wow. Great review!!!! The subscription is a great concept, but not a great box.. . But, I’m glad I read your review. I’m going to share it with my daughter. Awesome job! ??

Thanks Britt! I do really hope their other boxes have a different focus.

Yeah, this box is not worth it. You can get Kleancolor makeup at Daiso (which is like a Japanese dollar store) for $1.50 each.

This is just wrong. Love yourself by wearing dollar store, potentially toxic Chinese makeup and using flimsy tools? Seriously?

This box is both a rip-off and an insult to its own message.

I have a young teen and would love to get her a makeup subscription. I tried Ipsy but too much of their stuff is Chinese made (but at least it’s $10, not $30). I’m really hoping that Sephora will expand their subscription to our area. I think sample size makeup would be ideal for teens who are still trying to find the right colors and brands, but I want it to be high quality.

Anna

That’s a good point, nana.

....

I would have liked getting this as a teen but as an adult, I don’t think it meets the ‘love yourself first’ theme. It doesn’t seem better than Ipsy at nearly three times the price.

I agree with the 2nd part of your verdict 100% and believe you stated it very well! Thank you!

Thanks Bets! That means a lot to me.

Agree! I was shocked to see it was all makeup. Honestly with all the popular magazines targeted towards teens, they can figure that part out. What I couldn’t figure out as a teen was accepting myself for who I was…not trying to fit society’s standard, which caused me years of pain and self-hate; I think teens need a ton of self-love education instead.
