My Pretend Place Subscription Box Review – July 2015 - Box

My Pretend Place is a quarterly subscription for kids who love to get into costume! I was so excited to learn about this subscription! Both my sons love playing in costume. Our costume box is actually much bigger than our toy box!

This box was sent to us for review purposes. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).

My Pretend Place Subscription Box Review – July 2015 - letter

This month's costume is a Fire Fighter! One very cool thing that My Pretend Place does is include a letter to the child with every shipment. The letter is from a fictional character and helps initiate the play / pretend scenario. I like that it gives the kids some practice reading, too.

My Pretend Place Subscription Box Review – July 2015 - extras

These are items that come standard with every package from My Pretend Place: a thank-you card, a big magnet, and a handle plus some stickers to decorate the box so it can be kept for storage. I love when childrens' subscription services encourage us to re-use the box!

Big Frank's Fire Truck by Leslie McGuire - Value $2.25 on Amazon

It makes me so happy to get a kids' book in a subscription box! This looks like a great book, and it got 5 stars on Amazon! I love having new books to read with my little boys.

My Pretend Place Subscription Box Review – July 2015 - craft

My Pretend Place also usually includes a craft with each costume shipment. This quarter, it's a kit to paint your own fire truck! Cool! I really like wooden toys for little kids.

My Pretend Place Subscription Box Review – July 2015 - costume

And now what we've all been waiting for - the costume! This firefighter costume is made by Melissa and Doug, and I honestly don't think I've ever seen such a high quality firefighter coat (other than on an actual firefighter)! The helment is really sturdy and nice, too! Unfortunately, this costume is just a little too small for my younger son. It looks a bit like a summer kimono on him! So sadly, we will have to swap this.

My Pretend Place Subscription Box Review – July 2015 - fireman-gear

Also included were these two essential pieces of fireman gear - an extinguisher and a bullhorn. The bullhorn actually works with batteries! The extinguisher is just a bottle, but it looks like you might be able to use it as a water bottle, which is never a bad thing to have around during play time.

My Pretend Place Subscription Box Review – July 2015 - warning

The warning on the tiny extinguisher cracked me up!

My Pretend Place Subscription Box Review – July 2015 - hose

I think this is the most awesome inclusion in the package, and possibly in any package we've received from My Pretend Place. It's a super soaker you wear as a backpack! We will get a lot of use out of this over this summer!

The verdict: My Pretend Place is great! I have been consistently impressed with the quality of their costumes. I also love that they include books and crafts. Moreover, if you look at my past reviews of My Pretend Place, you will see that they send little extra packages during the months your child does not receive a costume with additional activities that keep them interested in playing with their costume. My kids love it!

What do you think of My Pretend Place?

I highly recommend anyone who got this package be very clear with your child about what a fire extinguisher is, and that the toy is not that. I also recommend putting it away when not in use, so one of your child’s friends who you have not spoken with does not get confused. Playing pretend as a fire fighter is awesome, and this toy can be used as a great opportunity to teach your children about what to do and where to go in a fire. The warning is there for a reason though, and what is obvious to an adult is not necessarily obvious to a child. I keep the easy to use spray bottle type of fire extinguisher in several locations in my house, which I also recommend.

This looks like such a great box. I’m trying to hold off on subscribing until my kids are a little older. They aren’t into dressing up yet, but we do love the My Pretend Place craft subscription.
