Skein of the Month Club Subscription Box Review - June 2015 - box

Skein of the Month Club is a subscription box for knitters.  There are a couple of different price points and you can customize based on amount of yarn, yarn weight, etc.

My Subscription Addiction pays for this subscription. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

The Box: Skein of the Month Club

The Cost: This is a review of the classic club box in #4 weight (worsted). The classic club box was $24.99 for 2-4 skeins. However, we have recently learned that Skein of the Month Club has discontinued their subscription service. Their Facebook page is inaccessible and their online shop has been down for awhile. All current subscribers should receive refunds in the next 5-10 business days.

The Products: Soft, colorful yarn from Sunstag Yarns.  Perfect for building your stash!  Weights will always match and you can choose 1 (fingering), 3 (DK), 4 (worsted), or 5 (bulky).  Please note: this is a subscription for yarn only and does not include any notions, projects, or other supplies.

This is a review of the classic club box in #4 weight (worsted).  There was no information card included.

Ships to: US (free).

Skein of the Month Club Subscription Box Review - June 2015 - lilac

Summer Breeze Yarn in “Blooming Lilac” (2 skeins, 50 grams/75 yards each) – Value $20 (?)

This is a 60% Cotton/40% Modal blend. Modal is a semi-synthetic cellulose fiber and is often used in combination with other fibers such as cotton.   I like the color but I haven’t had a chance to make anything with this yet (I’m moving in three weeks and packing has to come first, unfortunately).

Skein of the Month Club Subscription Box Review - June 2015 - wool

100% Peruvian Highlands Wool in “Frosty Heather” (2 skeins, 50 grams/110 yards each) – Value $20 (?)

This is a soft yarn in a good, neutral color. It’s perfect for fall or winter. I’m adding this in to my scarf from last month because the yarns are the same type of wool and the grays will go together well (plus I made the scarf a bit too wide so I will need more yarn to complete it).

Verdict: I calculated a value of about $40 for this month’s shipment. That’s about $15 over the cost of the box. Although the value was definitely there, I think the selection of yarns was odd – coordinating colors were promised, and I suppose the colors go together, but I’m hesitant to use two different types of yarn in the same project. Washing, fabric drape, wear, etc., would be different in different sections. It felt a little bit like they were just throwing leftovers in the box, especially since their shop website has been down for awhile now.

What did you think of the Skein of the Month Club? Are there any yarn or knitting subscriptions you’d recommend or that you’d like to see reviewed on MSA?

  1. Did I misread? If there is no longer yarn box subscription service why would it be reviewed?

    • Yarnbox is still around.

This is for “Skein of the Month” which closed up shop this month. The box was received well in advance of the notification that the subscription service was shutting down. Plus, by posting the review, we could let people know that subscriptions are no longer active (in case they missed the e-mail or were thinking about signing up for the first time) and ask for other boxes MSA readers are interested in, in the same general area.

Although I don’t have access to the visitor statistics to the site, I notice that people tend to comment more often on review posts than on coupon/sale/box news posts, which suggests to me that more people read the reviews than the other posts. Hence a post like this would be better at getting the word out.

Plus, MSA regularly reviews limited edition and one-time boxes that are no longer available for purchase.

      • Thanks for the explanation Ragan. I mistyped and meant to type Skein of the Month.

        • No problem. I was just trying to cover all the bases.

  2. I subscribe to Yarn Box. They offer several different plans and always nclinclude patterns. I have been very happy with them.

    • Totally agree. And the yarn is extremely lux.

    • I agree with this 110%. They have four subscriptions there now at Yarnbox. The first shipment of their newest one ships tomorrow. I’ve been a subscriber since the beginning and received all their boxes. The owners are wonderful and really try their best.

    • Very beginner knitter here. How difficult are the patterns that come in that box? I think challenging myself with new projects is the best way for me to learn, but I’m worried about over-shooting my abilities and losing interest.

  3. I agree that the boxes this month weren’t really curated but were comprised of overstock. I only received this one month so I don’t really have a point of comparison personally but a girlfriend who has been a subscriber for over a year says the boxes were typically well curated and that this month looked like a dumping ground for all that remained in stock. I would be very reluctant to use two different types of yarn in one project for all the reasons you noted. I love the colors you received; mine were totally different though I also subbed for the #4 weight. More proof they sent the leftovers. I got a brown ombré blend that doesn’t exactly scream summer but will work well come fall, along with a brick red.
