Beauty Box 5 Review – June 2015 Box

Beauty Box 5 is a monthly beauty and makeup subscription box. It’s also one of the cheapest beauty subscription boxes – only $8.25 a month with an annual subscription. They tend to feature drugstore brands, and usually the product sizes are deluxe or sample size. (Sometimes they still send out the dreaded foil packets though).

My Subscription Addiction pays for this subscription. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).

Beauty Box 5 Review – June 2015 Info

Each Beauty Box 5 box comes with an informational card detailing each item in your box for that month.

Beauty Box 5 Review – June 2015 Lol

Urban Decay Perversion Mascara– 3 ml (Travel Size) – Value $12

I’ve tried this mascara before and it does give great length and volume. I’m not sure why, but the formula irritated my eyes, so I’ll be passing this along to a friend.

LOL Rotational Eye Shadow in Splash that Cash - Value $3

I must admit, as soon as I saw the "LOL" brand when I opened this box, I assumed it was a generic dollar-store brand. (I still may be right, but the palettes get decent reviews on Amazon).

Beauty Box 5 Review – June 2015 Nails Inc

Nails Inc Nail Polish in Brompton Place - FULL SIZE! Value $9.50

Herbal Essences Body Wash in Honey, Smell Good - 1.2 oz Value $.25

I like the Nails Inc. brand, and have a few colors from their collection, so I'm happy to have another one - plus I like the cotton candy pink creme color.

The scent of this body wash isn't for me, so it goes in the donation pile.

Beauty Box 5 Review – June 2015 Coupon

This box also came with a foil packet sample card for Simple Skincare Micellar Cleansing Water and a $20 coupon code for gorgehair.com. I'm pretty annoyed that the Simple Skincare item is listed as one of the 5 beauty items on the info card - it is the equivalent of a beauty sample you'd see in a magazine, and doesn't count as a subscription box sample in my opinion.

Verdict: This box has a value of about $25. It's not a hit for me, and probably a box I wouldn't subscribe to if I hadn't signed up for an annual subscription. Lately there just seem to be too many misses for me - whether it is the brands or sizes of the samples. What do you think of Beauty Box 5?

I got the 10 Mystery box and $5 Frenzy. I don’t recall what lipbalm it was-it was dried, crumbling and turning black. I e-mailed them and they offered to replace it.
I hadn’t looked at the brand and threw it straight in the trash can. I know it was organic and had goat milk in it.
Thing is, it truly just made me weary of the other products. I threw out another lip product without even checking to see if it was ok. I feared finding something gross again.
Everything else seems fine, yet I don’t want anything else from this company.

I ordered something from the gorgehair.com gift card out of my box and I am having a shipping problem and they will not contact me back. The tracking number says it was delivered somewhere in California and I live in Indiana. they have no phone number to call. Has anyone had any issues with actually receiving this product?

Yeah I’m strongly considering cancelling my subscription to this box. I’ve been with them for almost two years now and the box has really gone down hill in the last six months. The samples and/or the sample sizes are just terrible and half the stuff I get I can’t even use for one reason or another. I’d rather kick up the extra month and subscribe to another full size/deluxe sample size product box like the BoxyCharm and GlossyBox I already receive.

I will be cancelling once my year is up (this fall). My first boxes were OK but lately I have been disappointed more than happy with my boxes. I would rather spend my money on better boxes like Birchbox, IPSY and Glossybox.

This box is one of the reasons I went for the annual subscription. The box comes to less then 8 bucks thanks to a coupon code, so crap months like June don’t hurt so bad lol. The nail polish I got in a bright orange that I love, and has really good coverage. The eye shadows I got in a neutral brown scheme, and they have good color payoff, but they’re a dollar store brand. Like, not when people say dollar store brand, but really mean Wal-Mart or target- we literally went to the 99 cent store and got a bunch of these for stocking stuffers last Christmas. The body wash smell nice and all, but like said before, nothing even kind of new. It’s not even new to me, and I don’t buy body wash from anywhere other then bath and body works. The face wash thing just angered me. A towelette that cleaned one cheek is not a real sample, not one I’d ever pay for. Or need to, as I’m flipping through Saturday’s mail, and guess what I’ve got? The same damn sample, because I’ve joined their email newsletter thing. Perversion is not a sample I’m ever happy to see, as it’s crap. I don’t know if it’s specifically formulated to not do anything if you already have decent eyelashes or what, but no matter how many times I try I get no effect. I always pass it on to my eyelash impaired aunt. Plus, this is the third time since August bb5 has sent out that same sample. So all in all, pretty awful box. Still not as bad as the month of empty bottles and toothpicks, but then, is anything? Def not resubscribing when it runs out. I’ll spend the money on something more worthwhile.

I cancelled this box some time ago and after seeing the reviews in recent months, am very glad I did. It’s sad when the samples I get out of a magazine are the same ones that are showing up in a paid subscription box.

Elizabeth

I cancelled months ago for this reason. Same with my ipsy bag. So many repeats or months where I felt like I got the same thing in a different brand :/

I actually quit right after receiving this box. I signed up knowing I would get drugstore items, but not really expecting things from the dollar store. There is no reason why this costs more than Ipsy or Birchbox.

What is interesting is that the parent company for Beauty Box 5 also puts out a higher end subscription- Lilee Box. And Lilee Box is AWESOME! This month’s Lilee Box was such a hit with me that it became the first box I have received EVER in which nothing will be swapped. I am keeping it all for myself!!

I honestly think the low value, low quality items in BB5 might actually be driving off potential customers for Lilee Box.

chris

You are correct. I am not interested in Lilee for this exact reason.

The Urban Decay mascara is the only reason I didn’t email them and ask for a refund on my remaining months. The bright pink and purple eye shadow colors in the palette I received would look clownish on me. The upside is that I can give this stuff to my step mom’s church and they will distribute it to someone happy to receive it 🙂

perfect timing! my subscription cancelled last month. no way i am going to renew now!

I have always been fond of my BB5 boxes but this month was the biggest disappointment yet. The LOL shadow has cheap ingredients that are harmful for your skin. The other items besides the nail Polish were a joke. I actually emailed them to gives feedback since they don’t sent feedback surveys

I was so disappointed with this box. That microwater sample was a joke. It didn’t even have a full use! I thought it looked like something the company would have randomly mailed as free sample out in a mass market campaign and sure enough I looked at the back of the card and it had a spot for addresses. The lol brand is a cheap dollar store brand. The Herbal Essence isn’t a new scent or formula so nothing exciting there. The full size nail polish wad nice. The onr high end brand, Urban Decay, the sample is TINY, TINY, TINY. I’m seriously thinking of canceling. I just don’t feel that they are sending anything worth trying or being excited about.

I find the drugstore samples of body wash, shampoo, conditioner and the like irritating, because I used to go to this website that would point you to the free sample promotions that brands like Dove and Herbal Essence would send out free deluxe samples if you provided an email address and home address to you for free. I did this a lot in grad school when I was very poor and saved a lot of money on bath supplies. I don’t like paying for them through a subscription. I don’t remember the name of the website, but if you look for something like that, Samantha, that could be another way to get more items for the shelter. Just be careful of those freebies websites where you have to sign up for “free trials,” that ending asking for your credit card info. There are many sites that just provide you the link to herbal essences promotional page. Make sure to set up a junk email account for all the spam you will ending up getting, for that is almost unavoidable even with the reputable freebie websites. But to your question Liz, I find BB5 to be failing behind in the the level of the quality and size of their samples.

I actually had a long list of legitimate freebie websites when I was living in FL, before I came back to WV to be with my mother, anyway I never had to buy deodorant, shampoo, razors, feminine products, you get the point. Once I found the really good sites, I was set because they would send me stuff on a regular basis and I never bought the items above for over 2 years, unfortunately I ended up losing most of the sites when my computer crashed, and I understand what you mean about the spam, I have an old email address but i just don’t have the time now to sit and fill out all those pages. The last one I tried from Facebook, they sent me a really nice set of 3 big cans of baby formula, 4 smaller bottles already mixed with the nipples and numerous other things and coupons, the problem is I’m not pregnant, but I had new neighbors move in and the girl just found out she was, so I gave it all to her and they named their baby girl “Samantha”, I don’t think it was because I gave them formula but, made me feel like I did the right thing, now I constantly get coupons for it so I pass them along to her as well. I just thought it was crazy, I do not have any children, so it’s not like I made a mistake and said I had a 1 month old. Thanks for the idea!!! I may try some of them again once the room i’m having remodeled is finished.

I quit BB5 for this very reason. Their samples simply weren’t up to par for me. This box is MORE than Birchbox or Ipsy, but you get way more out of Birchbox & Ipsy, in my opinion. Not to mention, the rewards programs. I got better samples from my Target & Walmart beauty boxes & they are cheaper! $5 & $7, respectively. I think BB5 needs to make some changes if they want to stay on the same level as their competitors or they will lose their subscribers. Their LE boxes are pretty awful too. I’ve gotten two & I’ll never get another one. Definitely not worth $35.

Hi, I was reading the reviews. I work with two women’s shelters (domestic violence mostly). I collect items to donate to them, if you don’t have anywhere to donate your items, I would be happy to pay the shipping to get the items. I do special occasions(Mother’s Day was huge) and each month I do birthdays, if you’re interested, please let me know and i’ll provide you my information. Thank you!

Liz, where do you donate your unwanted beauty products? I’m interested in doing this, too

Reply ButtonReply

Ann

I used to donate to a local women’s shelter when I was big into couponing. YWCA has locations in quite a few states.

I work at a DV Shelter, and the ladies are always happy to get makeup/perfume.
We do a manicure night once a week as well.
I would definitely encourage you to find the local homeless women’s or domestic violence shelter in your area. 🙂

Even though the value is there, I would have been mad if I’d gotten this box. I love the Simple Micellar Water, but it’s not expensive. A tiny sample of it doesn’t count any more than if they’d sent a perfume scratch card.

Liz I totally agree with you I think the simple sample should have been the same size as the body wash. I don’t even feel like the sample provided would really be of any use.
