I have to say that requiring the return of the gift mascara is kind of petty and pointless. What if a customer already used it when they realized they needed to return something else? BB wants a potentially used mascara back? For what possible purpose? And how on earth would they ever enforce that, by denying an exchange or refund for an item that was paid in full? It’s just odd.

Requiring customers to return the free gift with purchase (unused) to return other items is a technique some cosmetic-selling sites use to avoid having returns at all. That’s why certain websites give samples with every order. They’re betting you’ll open that foil packet, and lose your ability to return anything. It doesn’t sound like the typical Birchbox MO, though.

It’s probably just to deter people who might be tempted to order something they intend to return right away just to get the gift. I’m sure they wouldn’t send out the mascara again once it had come back to them.

I know. Once they sent me a mascara by accident, instead of an eyeliner I ordered. They told me to keep the extra mascara, gave me 100 points, and sent the correct eyeliner out separately.
Probably they just cut and paste boilerplate language without thinking too hard about what the implications are for a particular item.

They only do it in hopes of preventing people from ordering things that they don’t intend to keep to score free mascara. Quite a few people out there actually order things with plans to return them just to get the gift that was with the purchase. The people who abuse the GWP offers make these companies spend thousands in restocking fees. The Macy’s and Belk near my house do the same thing if you participate in a GWP offer.
