birchbox-march-2015-

Birchbox is one of the original beauty subscription boxes, and one of my personal favorites. (I’ve discovered so many new brands through this subscription, and their rewards program is the best!)

Birchbox Review - March 2015 First Look

My Subscription Addiction pays for this subscription. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).

Birchbox Review - March 2015 Items

The Subscription Box: Birchbox

The Cost: $10 a month (get one month free and $10 to spend in the shop with an annual subscription!)

The Products: Beauty and lifestyle samples selected by the Birchbox team.

Check out all of my Birchbox reviews and the Beauty Subscription Box Directory!

Birchbox Review - March 2015 Info

Each box comes with a card detailing the items included and some tips on how to use them.

Birchbox offers an option for subscribers to pick one of their samples each month or to select a pre-curated box. This month I decided to go with the pre-curated box. From what I've noticed so far, the curated boxes tend to ship before the regular boxes.

Birchbox Review - March 2015 Dear Clark

Dear Clark Volumizing Tonic - 1 oz Value $4.30

Laura Geller Beauty Baked Blush-n-Brighten in Pink Grapefruit - 1.8 g Value $9.40

This volumizing spray is meant to be applied to towel-dried hair. I wanted to try it immediately though, so I sprayed it on my completely dry hair. I like the scent, and I think I noticed a subtle lift in volume, but I'm guessing I'll get better results following the directions.

This baked blush is a shimmery natural-looking pink - it is highly pigmented too, so this mini version should last me a while!

Birchbox Review - March 2015 Whish

Supergoop Advanced SPF 37 Anti-Aging Eye Cream - 2 ml Value $6

Whish Three Wishes Body Butter in Almond - .75 oz Value $3.50

This Supergoop sample is tiny, but the full-size eye cream is small (.5 oz), so I should be able to get a few uses out of it since you only need a small amount under your eyes. I like the formula - it seems gentle, absorbs quickly and has a bit of a sunscreen scent.

I like the Whish brand, but some scents are for me, and some aren't. I think this Almond scent works though!

Birchbox Review - March 2015 Derma e

derma e Evenly Radiant Brightening Day Creme SPF 15 - .5 oz Value $7

I love the size of this sample! It's a somewhat thick creme, so I might actually end up using it as a night cream. I really like the ingredients of derma e products too. (This cream is 100% vegan, cruelty-free, paraben-free, sulfate-free, mineral oil-free, lanolin-free, gluten free, and GMO-free).

Verdict: This box has a value of about $30. I think that's great for a $10 box, and I'm happy with all the sample sizes too. (I'm starting to think I'll have more consistently awesome boxes if I always pick the curated box for the month).

What do you think of the Beauty Solutions March Birchbox? Did you go with this box, a selected sample, or a complete surprise?

Has Birchbox ever replaced a lost box. Tomorrow will be the 9th shipping day with no scans since it got picked up. I sent them an email about it and received an automated response that they are backed on emails. Tomorrow will be day 3 of waiting for a response for BirchBox. So much for being Aces and receiving a timely response. I’ve been receiving BirchBox for almost a year and it has never taking this long for it to arrive.

I’m getting box fatigue. It seems that there have been too many issues with subs lately. I am paying them money for product. I shouldn’t have to chase after my subs, wonder if my box will ship etc. This is the first time it took awhile for Birchbox to reach me so I can’t complain about them, but there are others that I am ready to cancel.

I got a new box after emailing them 🙂 My old one never showed up…

Thank you both for letting me know. I feel better although it looks like I will miss out on the BirchPlus item I ordered. I think the weather is getting me down. It’s snowing. It’s beautiful, but I am ready for sunshine!

I got my sister a 3 month gift subscription, and her first box got lost. Birchbox didn’t send her a new box, but they extended her subscription by a month. It was supposed to end in April, but now it will end in May. Incidentally, her “lost” box eventually did show up after about 3 weeks.

Last month was my best to date and this one was poor! I wanted liz earle or Vasanti like others got. They rarely follow the quiz unless you cancel and resubscribe.

I got shampoo, perfume, more hair care the goopy highlighter and perfume sample. I think I will like the Fekkai though 2 oz is generous.

I actually been with them 10 months have yet to receive Vasanti or liz earle, I collect small face clensers.

Those that chose the #10 spray got good boxes. All my friends as the spray is 2 oz and she got Liz earle, roloxin face masks 2 pk samples and now there is soooo much hype on beauty blogs and facebook that people are trading like crazy for it. I regret not choosing the its a 10.

Lol. They used that combo in a lot of boxes. I think I need two accts lol

I’m new to BirchBox (this is my second box), though I’ve followed the reviews for a while. I didn’t get to choose any samples this month as they were all gone by the time I got the notification, but I was surprised to notice that two out of the three appeared in my box: the Amika Bombshell spray and the Beauty Protect & Oil. Weird. Is this normal? Would I actually be better off NOT selecting samples in the future? It worked out well for me, as I’ve had the It’s a 10 from another sub and it didn’t work for my hair. I do feel badly for other people who perhaps wanted to try one of the choices but didn’t get to, and somehow I ended up with two of them.

For reference, I also received Benefit’s Watt’s Up highlighter, Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentré 24 Hour Miracle Cream, and a Paula’s Choice Resist Moisture Renewal Oil Booster. So, two hair items and two skincare items, and no makeup unless you count the highlighter. But no foils or perfume, so I’m happy.

I got the curated box this month and am really pleased. I will use everything. I do miss the element of surprise, but I appreciate being able to get a box I know I will be happy with. I have been a subbed for years, although I took a brief break this winter after getting a few repeated products and ugh boxes, but I found that I missed it and re-subbed.

Anyway, the one thing I wasn’t looking forward to in this box was the blush (I just have tons and it takes me forever to use them) but when I tried it I really liked it. It will be great for summer.

This was my first Birchbox and I joined too late to pick my samples. I’m not impressed, frankly. I got the same Supergoop eye cream, but the rest of my samples were different: Beauty Protector detangler (don’t need), BeeKind shampoo (doesn’t explicitly state is color-safe so I won’t try it), Jelly Pong Pong highlighter (not age-appropriate for me) and Temple Spa body balm (the only thing I’m interested in trying.) I’ll keep it for at least another month to experience the opportunity to select sample or a curated box, but I’m rating this at the bottom of my subs right now.

Overall, I’m happy with my box this month!

I got the Amika Bombshell Blowout spray (my pick), which I’m excited to try, but I’m not sure if it will work out or not. My hair is dry and damaged, so I it’s probably not a heavy enough product, but I’ll definitely give it a whirl. I wanted the It’s a 10! product but they were already out, and I knew I didn’t want their third option.

I also got the Number 4 clarifying shampoo and masque, which I’m thrilled about because I love hair products. The masque will be a nice treat for my highlighted hair, and I use clarifying shampoos a couple of times every month to remove buildup.

I’m also excited to try the Mirenesse Glossy Kiss, but I’m not sure how the color I received (Perfect Kiss) will look with my skin tone. I tend to gravitate to cool pink lip colors instead, but I’m interested in switching it up a bit.

I also got the Mereadesso moisturizer, which is something I could also buy a full-size of if I like it enough. I’m running low on my current moisturizer.

My least favorite for the month is the Elite Therapeutics body creme I received. I’ll use it, but I think body creme is a little boring.

Birchbox did a pretty good job for me last month too, but the month before that was meh. I hope they keep up the good work!

Hi,
If you are interested in swapping the Mirenesse perfect kiss for starlet( a cool toned mauve /pink) please let me know. I purchased several last year and the starlet was awful on my warm toned skin. Perfect kiss is really Mapely brown on the lips. I just got another Starlet in my Birchbox this month so –if you’d like it…

daiseywizbang at gmail.com
If interested.
Thanks!

Got my first box today, totally bummed. The two bigger items I can’t use due to allergies – miriness glossy kiss starlet and Cover FX BB Cream. Which leaves me with 3 hair items and perfume. I don’t really mind the number 3, though I did get that in my first box. Will be trying it tonight to compare to the shampoos I have been using. Have way to much of a stock on shampoo though. Got a great perfume collection, and rarely wear any…. Ah well, last month was awesome, got a beauty blender and I get $6 in points so I still love my birch box. My other box is not looking much better though, allergies sigh 🙂

I got my box today and I didn’t get all of the same items as what they have listed that I was to get.

It said I was getting 6 items: Jouer Moisturizing Lip Gloss, Number 4 Reconstructing Masque, Number 4 Clarifying Shampoo, Amika Bombshell Blowout Spray (my pick), StriVectin Instant Retexturing Scrub, and Jelly Pong Pong Glow Getter Highlighter.

Instead I got the Number 4 Shampooo, Amika spray, StriVectin, and instead the Cargo Water Resistant Blush and Jouer tinted sunscreen.

Not sure what to think because I’ll get the points for 6 items even though I didn’t receive all of what they listed, and I was looking forward to the lip gloss. Hmm. :/ Not sure if its really worth asking them about it, I’ve always gotten what was listed before. Sounds like the hair masque ended up just being a foil though.

This happened to me too! all of the same products were changed to different products not only once but 2 times…I noticed because i look at it often…

Ashley

I just wanted to add that this is only my 5th BB, and this is already the second time I’ve received Number 4 and Whish products together in the same box. Do they repeat brands this often in general? Of course, if they were brands I was crazy about, I guess I wouldn’t mind repeats. lol I just thought it was odd that they’ve come together twice already.

Ashley

This is my least favorite BB to date. Three hair items. Blah. I know hair was their theme this month, but THREE?! I purposely did not do sample choice because they were all hair products, and I didn’t want any. Well they showed me! haha I received:

Number 4 Reconstructing Masque (foil sample)
Number 4 Clarifying Shampoo
amika Bombshell Blowout Spray (wasn’t this a sample choice?)
Whish Shave Savour Hair Inhibiting Gel (really, this could count as a 4th hair product. haha)
Cargo Swimmables Water Resistant Blush
Supergoop! Daily Correct CC Cream (I’m excited to try this!)

Reply ButtonReply

Lexie

Lol, same here. Hair products are my least preferred item so I purposely didn’t do sample choice, and still got 2 hair items in my box this month. BB is still my favorite sub though and the boxes always average out on the positive side.

CoralBunny

At least you received the blush.

Reply ButtonReply

Adele

I was just thinking that too. I didn’t receive any of the sneak peak items.

Adele

I signed up in February but never received the email to pick the box for March. For April I will choose the curated as I’m not to thrilled with what I have received. My first box was ok, it had a detangler, lip stain (too bright for my skin tone), hand lotion, sunscreen and shampoo. For March I’m receiving 3 hair products: Another Shampoo without conditioner, a hair reconstructing masque for dry/brittle hair (my hair is neither) and a blowout spray even though I indicated on my profile I almost always let my hair air dry. Also receiving a perfume (I asked for no more than 6 a year), a BB gel and a lipstick pencil. I’m happy to try the lipstick and BB gel, but 2 out of 6 doesn’t seem too good.

I’m getting the same box. meh

Do you need two difference email addresses to have two subscriptions?

I should have gone w the curated box, I’m really jealous of the Laura Geller blush!! (I have a Dipped Honey one that I had purchased after receiving the deluxe sample). For some reason I thought it was the one I already had in the box, I will have to pay better attention next time!! (although the rest of the box didn’t really thrill me – if there had been one other wow item I probably would have done this one).

Jennifer

Does anyone know when Birchbox starts to ship after signing up? And Ipsy and Boxycharm for that matter….

Reply ButtonReply

Aria

I’m happier with the curated boxes, too. Last month I chose the sea salt spray, rather than going curated, and it was the only thing in my box that I liked. It seems the value is higher in the curated boxes, as well.

Reply ButtonReply

Alicia

I got mine today, I was so excited lol. I get two each month so I can get the curated and the regular monthly one. I loved everything in it! I did give away the supergoop because im only 21 and really don’t need it yet. I can’t wait till the other one ships, I wonder when that will be?

Reply ButtonReply

kiwimangoes

I went with the curated box but haven’t gotten mine yet. I’ll use everything in it, though I wish the derma-e wasn’t in a jar.

Also added on the UPF scarf so I’m looking forward to it!

How do you choose the curated versus random? I just logged into my account and other than a profile, don’t see where you get to choose? Could it be because I’m newer? Just started with the Feb. box.

Reply ButtonReply

Beth

I started with the Feb box, too, and had a week-long Issue with Birchbox re: not getting the email to choose your sample or a curated box.. so you’re not alone, lol. Eventually they told me that some people who subbed towards the end of February didn’t get the email due to some kind of glitch in the system where it cut off too soon.

So we’ll get the email towards the end of THIS month to choose for April, but we didn’t and won’t be getting one for March.

Reply ButtonReply

Haley

It looks like you get an email about mid month for the following months box, but since you will get a box for the month you subscribe in, I would not expect to get a choice until, at least the second month.

Sneaky Burrito

You will get an e-mail with a personalized link. The selection window is only open for a little while — towards the end of the month before. Make sure you are set to receive e-mails from Birchbox. And there will be a post here to let you know to be on the lookout for the e-mail (a lot of the comments will say what people picked).

Reply ButtonReply

Sarah

Usually they release a video in the magazine section that announces the sample choices, birchbox plus (extra items you can add at a discounted price), and curated box, then later you get an email to pick your choice. Sometimes they will offer early access if you refer friends, and ACE members (those who have 500 birchbox points or more) get it a day earlier. Sample choices usually sell out, but I have missed picking one and still gotten one of the choices, and sometimes I don’t pick one if there isn’t one I’m dying to try. Never tried a curated box, I kind of like the element of surprise. I would think you should sign up for the emails to ensure that you get the invite for April.

I’m getting this same box this month, looks great.

I chose this box mostly because I wanted to try the super goop, but I am excited to try all of it now. I agree I think the curated boxes have been terrific. I miss the surprise when I get them but it’s nice to have boxes where I will use mostly everything.

I got this same box mainly because of the blush. Really looking forward to it!

I chose this box on one account because they were out of It’s a 10 (which I love). Hasn’t arrived yet, though. I’m feeling good about the choice after seeing the review!

That blush looks amazing. I want it. lol The curated boxes seem to get delivered so much quicker than the regular boxes. I got the Rent the Runway box last month and had it by the 6th. I haven’t even gotten a shipment notification yet this month.

I received an email that they updated their terms. It looks like it’s in response to the class action suit in CA. I haven’t received a tracking number yet for my box. The curated box looks nice.

Reply ButtonReply

EC

And the new terms are??? How is the change connected with a class action suit (if it’s still pending it would be a very unusual move for a party to make changes that are the subject of the litigation at issue)? Just curious.

Reply ButtonReply

Cindy

What are the changes in terms? Any idea what the class action suit is all about? Hadn’t heard a peep about that.

It has to do with their Auto-Renewal program.
