Reiko Rose Subscription Box Review - February 2015 Post Cards

This month, we received two postcards to my seven-year-old (yes, he turned seven over the weekend!). The one on the left describes the whole concept of Reiko Rose, and the one on the right is a postcard from Reiko telling about her adventures during the past month.

Reiko Rose Subscription Box Review - February 2015 Postcard Out

This is the blank postcard we received to send to a friend. It's very cute and colorful! Over the past year I have encouraged my kids to become interested in snail mail, mainly to practice their writing. I have a feeling this one will be going to Grandma pretty soon!

Reiko Rose Subscription Box Review - February 2015 Erasers

These little shell erasers are adorable! For some reason, the first graders at my son's school are very, very interested in novelty erasers, so these were an instant hit!

Reiko Rose Subscription Box Review - February 2015 Jellyfish

This jellyfish room decoration came folded up, and my son and I had a hard time figuring out what it was or what to do with it. I finally got it inflated, but it was not through any obvious process. It is cute, but he wasn't too interested in hanging it in his room.

Reiko Rose Subscription Box Review - February 2015 Hair Clips

My son was kind of insulted that his box included flower hair clips, so I had to explain to him that they probably didn't know if the box was for a girl or for a boy when they packed it for him. However, I don't see boy / girl customization options on the web site. The main page refers to 'the child in your life' in a unisex manner, but at the bottom of the order page, there is an option to input the child's birthday so that they can send something extra to 'your little girl' on that month. So I guess it's a subscription box just for girls? It's a little unclear.

In any case, my son gave me the hair clips, which worked out fine. They are really pretty, and since we celebrated his birthday over the weekend I went ahead and wore them. They made me look a lot more festive (and only slightly more silly)!

Reiko Rose Subscription Box Review - February 2015 Necklace

Even though the chain is pink, my son loved this. It's a little bit of Hawaii in a bottle! It has a tiny shark's tooth in it (along with sand and shells), so I guess that overrides the pink in terms of coolness. He wore it all weekend!

Reiko Rose Subscription Box Review - February 2015 Origami Fish

Our origami project this month was fish, and let me just tell you, googly eyes are everything to a seven-year-old! The instructions are on the left. I did the folding, he glued on the googly eyes. I wish the eyes had been self-adhesive, but we had a glue stick handy.

Verdict: This was a fun box! I think obviously a little girl would have enjoyed it a lot more. I do wish they had gender options, though! Hawaii has tons of things little boys would be into, like volcanoes and sharks and surfing. Also, I think the origami is a little challenging for a seven-year-old, but everything else in the box seems well-suited to a little one, so I'm not sure what age child this would be best for. Otherwise, I think this box was extremely well curated, and the 'treasures' were all super cute! In terms of value, I wish the price point were a little lower. I would be more inclined to think the value was there if the origami was more do-able for a little kid, but as usual, we enjoyed our time together anyway.

What do you think of Reiko Rose?

Wow… totally agree with Mamo’s comment. Definitely Oriental Trading co. cheapies. This box cost them MAYBE $5 to put together, and that’s being generous. Even with shipping, USPS flat rate is the same as the continental US and nothing in this box justifies such a high cost. I send and receive mail and boxes to/from Maui monthly and it’s not that much difference in cost. Bottom line, this company is a rip off.

Hey so I live on Maui and yes things are expensive but I can tell you right now that its overpriced because non of those items are from here. It looks like they are from oriental trading magazine. Maybe I should start a box after reviewing all this feedback! The really expensive thing here is shipping but sub boxes must get some deal?

Ouch!! The items in that box are worth maybe $8-$10 tops! Two postcards, two erasers, two barrettes, a blow up plastic jellyfish, and some origami? I cannot believe how positive this review is considering the absolutely LOW value, and also the fact that you have a boy! If I gave this to one of my sons, he would laugh! This makes me think that you are giving positive reviews on purpose just so curators don’t get a negative view of you. I come here hoping for honest reviews. This one is a HORRIBLE value for $40 a month, even if it is a cute family!

I agree.

I love this site, but come on, really?!? Price point “a little” lower?

Agree with all of the commenters. What would be great is if each box included a different book by a Hawaiian author and an activity that went along with the book, in addition to a few other novelties. That would definitely increase the value, in my opinion, to at least $30 or $35.

A book in this box would be a fabulous idea!

Happy birthday to your son, Anna!

My daughter is 6 and LOVES everything related to HI. (The barrettes are especially adorable.) She would love this box! Things are more expensive in HI, but wow, I can’t justify that much $ for this either.

For the same price, I could either buy her this box for a year or a round trip plane ticket from LAX (near us) to Honolulu.

I hope either the price goes down or the value of the contents of this box go up because she would really enjoy this.

Thank you Chris!

This is such a cute concept (especially if they either make it gender neutral or offer a boy version) but yeah— totally not worth the price. She really does need to rethink her business model. If I paid $15 including shipping for this I’d be disappointed.

I see on their website they say regarding a sample box “Like a true island girl – flower clips to wear in your pretty hair! *Alternate options are available for boys!”

Happy Birthday to your son! The box and concept is cute. I agree that the prices is high, but also aren’t prices higher in Hawaii to begin with? I wonder if that is why it costs so much.

Anna

Thanks PA Anna! Yes, I think Hawaii is very expensive, and I wondered that myself.

Echoing what’s already been said: cute stuff but WAY overpriced.

This box seems to be $32 for 3 months plus $5.95 shipping per month. Even at $16.62 a month it seems a little steep, but I would have gone crazy for this as a kid.

Reply ButtonReply

Jessica

No; that is the per month cost not the total for three months.

My first thought: Where’s the rest of it? Maybe some of the higher value items they forgot to put in the box. It’s a fun box, but not for the price. Maybe for $15 with shipping this would be a great box, not for $40

Chelsea

Wow. Just, wow.
If I got this box for forty bucks plus shipping, I would be sending this back to the manufacturer and on the phone so fast disputing this charge to my bank. I am surprised that your only (slightly) negative comment is that the price point should be lower. I am so glad that they sent this and you reviewed it. You saved me from ordering this. Thank you.

The value is so low! Like jessica said, everything can be purchased from the dollar store (or chinatown). You’re review is really nice to them, but maybe because you aren’t out $40? Origami is fun and origami paper isn’t that expensive, and you can find folding projects for all skill levels if the project provided is too difficult

Lokelani

Maybe i sound insulting, i don’t think this makes it any better but i’d be super disappointed if i paid $40 for that box + shipping

chelsea

You are not being insulting. You are being truthful and honest. I agree with you 100%. How many parents have forty bucks to waste on this…

nana

I completely agree. My daughter would actually have enjoyed everything in this box and been able to do the origami (she’s 10, which I’d say is the age limit for this box), but I’d had a heart attack if I’d paid $40 and this was all I got.

I understand that this is a mom & daughter operation, not a big company that can command big discounts – but she needs to re-think her business plan.

anna

Everything is super cute! 🙂

Forty dollars plus shipping?! I’m kind of stunned. Literally everything in this box could be purchased at the dollar store/printed online regardless of whether or not its beach themed. Next month just go buy 46 things from there 🙂 Or 40 and mail it to yourself, hah!

Jennifer

This box is not $40 a month plus shipping. It is $30 a month plus shipping (6 month sub) or $32 a month plus shipping (3 month sub).
