Mantry Subscription Box Review & Coupon – January 2015 Tailgate

This month's theme is Tailgate Tour. (This box arrived in time before the Super Bowl, I'm just a little late on getting the review posted).

Mantry Subscription Box Review & Coupon – January 2015 Info

Each box comes with a fold out card detailing each of the producers behind the food included and where they come from.

Mantry Subscription Box Review & Coupon – January 2015 Clouds

Rosemary & Sea Salt Pork Clouds - Value $4

Molly & Me Pecans All Natural Sweet Heat Pecans - Value $9.75

We tried a different flavor of these Pork Clouds in a past Mantry box, and my husband was happy to have more.

These pecans were so good! ( I lucked out because they are gluten and dairy free). The sweet heat was a perfect combination for me - sweet enough to be a dessert treat, but with enough heat to make me not want to eat the entire bag at once!

Mantry Subscription Box Review & Coupon – January 2015 Bean Dip

La Esquina Black Bean Smoky and Savory Dip - Value $5.75

Owl's Brew The Classic - Value $10

We enjoyed this bean dip for the Super Bowl - it was perfect with tortilla chips, and another gluten free and dairy free item for me!

And the Owl's Brew goes to our bar for the next time we make cocktails - Mantry recommends combining it with vodka and lemonade. It sounds like a perfect summer time drink.

Mantry Subscription Box Review & Coupon – January 2015 Honey

Mike's Hot Honey - Value $10

Aurelia's Dry Cured Chorizo - Value $9

This Hot Honey is recommended for using on pizza, chicken, ribs, biscuits, salads, fruits, cheeses and ice cream. I think it will be great for marinating chicken.

And my husband grabbed this chorizo as soon as I finished taking pictures - he loved it!

Verdict: This box has a value of about $50. As usual with Mantry, the values of the items themselves don't equal the cost of this box, so I recommend this subscription only if you value the curation and presentation as well.

As far as the items go, I think the Tailgate curation this month is great, and every item we've tried so far has been delicious. What do you think of the January 2015 Mantry box?

I just received the Feb. box and am totally underwhelmed. The same chorizo that was in the Jan box makes another appearance in the Feb box, and the only interesting item in an Oliver & Sinclair chocolate bar & a bar of pistachios (which I think I have seen you review in a box but are new to me). Overall box value is $47 – I’m canceling. Definitely not worth it!

I think if they only sent a crate with your first box or let you choose whether or not to get it, they could knock down the cost by a lot. I love the idea of this sub but would never feel okay with overpaying for it.

They could easily drop the price and make a cardboard box look like a crate a la Kiwi Crate….

Or at least give you some cool ideas of what to do with the wooden crates.

I have considered getting this sub for my husband so many times but I never pull the trigger because the value just isn’t there for us.

Or possibly give the option to pay less and not get the wooden crate.

Agree with Jennifer above. $75 might’ve been fine to change when they were starting out, but a few years in, they need to really look into reducing costs. After the Fancy Boxes ended, I was really looking for another subscription box to get into and seriously considered the Mantry. Ultimately, I would’ve paid $50 for this box, but $75 was just excessive for what you end up getting.

I’ll never understand why this sub is so expensive. I bought Mantry once with a pretty decent discount, and only then did I feel the box was definitely worth it. Curation and packing just doesn’t add $25 of worth. I expect those things out of any subscription because they are a service.
