Birchbox Review – January 2015 Box

Birchbox is one of the original beauty subscription boxes, and one of my personal favorites. (I’ve discovered so many new brands through this subscription, and their rewards program is the best!)

My Subscription Addiction pays for this subscription. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).

Birchbox Review – January 2015 Items

The Subscription Box: Birchbox

The Cost: $10 a month (get one month free and $10 to spend in the shop with an annual subscription!)

The Products: Beauty and lifestyle samples selected by the Birchbox team.

Ships to: US, FranceSpain and the UK and Canada

Check out all of my Birchbox reviews and the Beauty Subscription Box Directory!

Birchbox Review – January 2015 Info

Each box comes with a card detailing the items included and some tips on how to use them. (Birchbox offers an option for subscribers to pick one of their samples each month, or to select a pre-curated box, and this month I decided to go with the Relax & Recharge box).

Birchbox Review – January 2015 WHen

When Travel Sheet Mask - Value $7

This mask gets good reviews on Birchbox, so I'm excited to try it. (Plus I love fun/cute packaging!)

Birchbox Review – January 2015 Lip

Manna Kadar Lip Locked Priming Gloss Stain in All of Me - .01 oz Value $1.40

Briogeo Don't Despair, Repair Deep Conditioning Mask - 1 oz Value $4.95

I like this Manna Kadar Lip Locked product a lot - it's both a stain and a gloss, which gets rid of the drying effect lots of lip stains can have. And this color is very wearable for me!

I've sampled this deep conditioning mask before, and while I didn't notice any major improvements in my hair, I like it as a regular conditioner.

Birchbox Review – January 2015 Balance Me

Balance Me Extra Care Wonder Eye Cream - 7 ml Value $19

Perlier Intensive Nurturing Body Balm with Lavender Extract - 1 oz Value $4.25

This Balance Me eye cream is the main reason I picked the Relax & Recharge box this month - the sample is half the size of the full size version - it should last me a month! I also love that it is 99% natural - I've been using it for the past day now, and it has been great for my sensitive skin.

This nurturing body balm is very moisturizing and absorbs quickly, but I'm not a huge fan of the scent. (I love lavender, but this is more of a mix of lavender and a powdery perfume type of scent).

Birchbox Review – January 2015 Tea

Teapics Tea in Chamomile Flowers and Liquorice and Peppermint - Value $1.33

These tea bags were listed on the card as a bonus item. I drink tea all day everyday, so I always like getting new brands to try in subscription boxes. I love that this brand only uses natural ingredients. So far I tried the licorice flavor - and it was way too sweet for me. I'm thinking the Chamomile will better fit my tastes.

Verdict: This box has a value of about $38 - which is wonderful! I'll use everything besides the body butter, so the value for me personally is there as well - I'm really glad I went with this box!

What did you get from Birchbox this month?

Anyone else notice their canadian box doesn’t have a great value at all? Of course this is only the second month in Canada so I’m gonna give it time but my boxes are barely breaking even.

Did anyone else not receive their Birchbox Plus order with their box? I ordered the socks- didn’t come with the box. I emailed and they said they would ship later and separately, which is not the usual.

Hi,
I just signed up for Birchbox. How do you select your pre-curated box? I understand that my first box has shipped (do not have it yet but cannot wait!!!) but was curious about more customizable options for future shipments.
Thanks,
Mary

Be careful what you wish for 😉 those that are sorry they missed the opportunity to select one of the “take your pick” samples- I did and wish I hadn’t – although not in great need of lotion I was intrigued by the Essentiel Elements Wake up Rosemary lotion, being a fan of Rosemary- at least in cooking! Well in the lotion- Holy Cow! At first whiff there is a strong essence of B.O. followed by strong notes of moth balls. It is horrific! I will try anything and am not easily offended by odors I even enjoy the perfume samples that come and go but this was quite unforgettable and OH SO regrettable!

this one was a miss for me. i rarely get the emails from BB for the pick the item or the special box and when i do i often dont get the item i select. recently ive been liking my birchboxes but my jan one wasnt a good one. they sent me gel for curly hair (i dont have curly hair), same lip gloss as you which i cant get any feedback from the company if its GF or not, etc. i can barely even remember the other items it was that bad ! oh well…maybe next month.

AmyM

The single biggest reason I canceled Birchbox was because I received something for curly hair every month. Every. Month. And I have the straightest, finest hair known to man. It aggravated me so much I finally had to pull the plug.

I love the Briogeo conditioning hair mask. I got it a while back and have repurchased the full size twice since then (I have insanely long hair so I tend to use up shampoo and conditioner quickly). I haven’t tried the Mana Kadar lip stain yet but didn’t care for their face illuminator at all. It was extremely dry and too glittery. But I’m game to try the lip stain since I love stains in general.

I love the wonder eye cream. I got it a few boxes to go and used it consistently every day until it ran out. I really did notice a difference around my eyes. I loved that product. I was torn between getting the rest and relaxation box and going for the surprise. I went with the surprise and got the Dr. Jart BB cream which I am excited to try, the Essentiel lotion ( ACE pick) and super relaxing at night, Juliette perfume- love it and generally not excited about perfume in the box, #4 hairspray- not too excited, Sumita eye liner. I like my box but do miss the wonder cream!

The code BBHELLO didn’t work for me. It shows the code as invalid. Are there any other codes before I sign up??

I received this same box. I chose it for the lip gloss, I received the same lip gloss in a different color in my box last month and it’s hands down the best lip gloss I’ve ever used. EVER!! I also received two of the masks (woo!!) and I loved them. Very soothing! Eye cream is okay, I don’t expect much from eye creams, I’ve never used one that actually does anything to impact my circles or bags. Meh. And I haven’t tried the hair treatment yet. I’ve used the Perlier lotion before, it’s good, not great although I love anything and everything with lavender.

Claudia

I got the relax and recharge too, and I completely agree with you on all counts, Liz. Especially the tea! Oh my, I don’t think I have EVER tasted such a sweet tea. I drink a ton of tea, but that’s the first one I’ve had lately that I literally almost couldn’t finish due to the sweetness. But I liked the other flavor. I also really liked the other items in the box this month! I didn’t realize the eye cream was so valuable. That makes me even happier with this box.

Jill

Liz, I got the same box as you and agree with you on the scent of the shea butter cream. The lavender/baby powder blend made me think of old lady perfume! That one is up on the swap board. Looking forward to trying the eye cream, which is the main reason (plus the lip stain) that I picked this box.

After subscribing for seven months, I have canceled my Birchbox subscription. I was tired of getting so many perfume samples, hair samples (No. 4 and Annika), and other products with artificial or chemical ingredients/fragrances. Now that I’ve discovered Petit Vour and Goodebox (thanks to this blog!), I’m much happier with those subscriptions, and I generally use every product that I receive from them.

I picked the tocca cream too. My box is :
– Tocca cream
– Number 4™ Non-Aerosol Hairspray
– Whish Shave Crave Shaving Cream
– Coastal Scents® Revealed Palette
– Harvey Prince Sincerely – 50 ml
Definitly, not a bad box but not a great one either ! I love the tocca cream, the shaving cream and the palette ! But I will never use the perfume and the hairspray…I got an hairspray also last month…but never use hairspray ! Anyway, still have 3 samples I liked, though !

Natasha

Next time I will go curated instead. My box had a shampoo and conditioner foil packet, hair oil that smelled awful, a perfume sample, and a lotion. Your box looks so much better!

brandy

I have to say my box was the best I’ve ever received and I’m STOKED!

FULL SIZE Catherine cosmetics eye liner with double end eraser as on fb sneak peak. Gorgeous packing with ribbon.

REN radiance face mask! Gets awesome reviews. I saw it on fb sneak peak.

Aloe sourse sensitive skin facial cleanser 1oz 30% aloe. (Great reviews)

Tocca hand cream (I love tocca) I received lemon scent before and this is grapefruit.

Face tint by Sweet Science (gets amazing reviews)

Most of these items have few reviews on fb so a lot of there new choices.

One of my best birchbox’s to date. Now I want the NEW limited edition box vegan/cruelty free as I’m sure I’ll use everything. Hoarding points for it! 🙂

Reply ButtonReply

Emily

Brandy, I immediately went searching for the vegan/cruelty-free box you mentioned above and didn’t find anything — was that from Birchbox, or a different sub? Thanks!

Reply ButtonReply

Megan

I got the same box (chosr the tocca) but the actual box had one of the other chosen samples in it. They somehow noticed before shipment and sent my birchbox in a larger box with the tocca wrapped in tissue. Bizarre, but great preemptive customer service!

Reply ButtonReply

Lura

I’m getting exactly the same box! I wonder if they give everyone who picks a particular sample (the tocca cream) the same box?

Reply ButtonReply

jess

I picked the tocca and received completely different items. I had the Harvey Prince Sincerely sample (I hate perfume samples), Cynthia Rowley Creamy Lip Stain in a sample size (meh…not exciting), the Tocca lotion, and then a Neil George shampoo and conditioner both in 50ml sizes. All together not a very exciting box.

Subie

I picked the TOCCA cream and received that, the eye cream & lip stain Liz got, an Argan Oil for hair and skin and It’s a 10 Miracle Leave In + Keratin. SUPER IMPRESSED with this box. 🙂

Jamie

Does anyone know when we will have the option to choose a sample or pick a curated box on the canadian birchbox site? I have yet to be given an option.

Reply ButtonReply

Subie

I believe if you’re a Birchbox Ace you get to choose a little bit sooner than general subscribers. You get to be an ACE after you accrue 500 birchbox points in a year…(don’t quote me on that, but I think that’s the magic number.)

Reply ButtonReply

Jamie

Ok thanks. This is only the second month they have shipped to Canada so I am not familiar with how it all works yet.

Charma

I chose this box too and I love it.

Elizabeth

I received my box last night and loved it but it’s not the box that’s pictured under my account! Fortunately, I love everything I got.

Reply ButtonReply

Annie

If you received different products than what shows up in your profile, you can contact Birchbox and they will send you a replacement box. That way you can still submit product review for points. If you send them a photo of the box you did receive they may even give you access to review those products for points as well. I had a similar situation with my very first box and Birchbox Customer Service blew me away!

I missed the deadline for picking what type of box I’d like to receive ;-( I believe the deadline fell around the holidays while I was on vacation. Bummer, I love the box that you received! I’m on the fence about mine. I received a small Dr. Jart Premium Beauty Balm SPF 45+, small Harvey Prince perfume sample, small Sumita eyeliner in Jaipur Gold, Small tube of Vasanti Cosmetics Brighten Up! Enzymatic Face Rejuvenator, and a small tube of Whish Three Whishes Body Butter. When I compare what I got to what you received I feel let down ;-( I guess I better pay attention to that deadline next time! There really wasn’t a wow factor for me in my box! Compared to other January boxes I’ve received this month, this one falls at the bottom of the pile for me. Thanks for sharing!

Brooke

I got that exact box. It doesn’t suck, but I agree it isn’t exciting.

I did have the early-ace PYS chance but I didn’t want either curated box and I wasn’t in love with any of the PYS except the Tocca. So in one box I picked nothing- and got exactly what you got, and in the other I picked the Tocca and don’t have that box yet…

Reply ButtonReply

Sneaky Burrito

I got this box, too.

I like the lippie but hate the container — every time I close it, some product escapes. Even though like 1/3 of the container is not full. I am losing a lot of product that way and also making a mess of my makeup bag (the times I forget to wipe it off with a Kleenex).

I haven’t tried the tea yet. I HATE licorice tea. It is an acquired taste, for sure. Got some (from another brand) in a sampler once and had trouble giving it away. Until I found a guy from Denmark who took it (apparently strong licorice flavors are popular in Scandinavian countries?).

Haha, sounds like I don’t like the box but I actually do. I wasn’t sure the hair product would have enough for my (long) hair but I have another sample of it from somewhere so if I put the two of them together, I should be able to test it out. Will try the sheet mask this weekend. Will use the eye cream once I’m finished with my current one (am trying to minimize number of open products).

Sneaky Burrito – I got 1.5 uses out of the hair mask, but my hair is not as long as yours. I don’t know why I tried it again. It left my ends dry and my hair tangled. Did anyone else experience this?

Reply ButtonReply

Jill

I got that hair mask in a previous box (and again in the same one Liz got, but I wanted the other products so it was OK). I had the same experience, where it had a negative effect on my hair.

Amber

I’m feeling a little sad about BB this month. I still haven’t gotten my box that shipped on the first. I finally sent them an e-mail about it because I haven’t even gotten any shipping updates. However, I’m not sure why I even care so much about it because I’m not interested in anything I’m getting.

For the second month in a row I’m getting a Harvey Prince perfume, I’ve yet to find a HP perfume I actually like (I actually ended up with two boxes last month because I was gifted a subscription so the first perfume came from my “Welcome Box”) I’m also getting something that I’ve already sampled from a Mystery Pack and another Whish product (the lotion) and I tried out their shaving lotion from my first box and I HATED the smell so I just feel like everything is such a repeat. Definitely a disappointing month overall.

Reply ButtonReply

Sara

Last month my box took forever to get to me. It took a full week+ after the expected arrival date.

Reply ButtonReply

AnnD

I loved my January box! I did not get one of the curated boxes (I was too late), but that’s okay. I really really like the Balance Me eye cream and I got an amazing concealer (I can’t remember the brand right now). Those were my favorites out of the box, but I also got Stainiac blush an lip stain, Curl Keeper hair product and some other stuff. I was really happy.

Reply ButtonReply

Sara

This box looks good! I got the Tone it Up box, which I like everything in it minus the Coastal Scents sampler. I already have 2 palettes and a couple samplers. I’ve been getting the curated boxes for a while but the non curated boxes seem to be better. I’m also dying for lip products in my boxes and rarely get them 🙁

Reply ButtonReply

Brooke

My advice re lippy is that you should subscribe to a lip sub (I did lip monthly) just for 2-3 months, and then you will be swimming in lippy 🙂

Reply ButtonReply

Sara

Yes I subscribe to Lip Monthly too, but I still need more lol. It seems everyone else can get lip products in their Ipsy bags or Birchboxes and I rarely do.

raisin

This is one of the best BB’s I’ve seen. I want everything!

Reply ButtonReply

cheryl

OK why did you get such a decent box? I haven’t received mine, but look what’s coming on line and it’s awful. Your boxes have been 10xs better than mine. .A little curious if they know you are reviewing as I would sign up in a second looking at what you got. I don’t understand and am disappointed.

Reply ButtonReply

Brooke

Well she chose the Relax and Recharge box, which was fully spoiled and which was an option for everyone.

I didn’t go for it personally because i have the lip stain and the body balm, I have too much conditioner, and I don’t drink tea. But it looks like a nice box!

Reply ButtonReply

anna

If you are ACE, you could also choose this box. It is one of two curated boxed this month. I chose the other one : “Tone up” which has Klorane dry shampoo.

Reply ButtonReply

Liz Cadman

This box was one of the two curated boxes subscribers could pick this month instead of picking one of their samples. This post I did in December has the complete details: https://www.mysubscriptionaddiction.com/2014/12/reminder-check-your-email-for-birchbox-sample-selection.html

Hope that helps explain it! 🙂
