Swap Site & Subscription Box Directory Update

Swap Site Update - January

Just a quick update to the swap site to share! If you are negotiating a swap with someone, and they have received negative feedback on one or more of their past ten swaps, you will see this pop-up.

This is not to say you shouldn't swap with that person, but just to call your attention to their feedback page in case you haven't already checked it out.

The reason I wanted to add this feature: When someones reaches out to me about a bad swap experience, often times they say they wish they would have looked at the swapper's feedback page closely before doing the swap. (They would have seen the negative feedback and avoided the swap or handled it differently).

Let me know if you have any feedback or questions!

And in subscription box directory updates, we've added a geek category!

And you can now browse the category by boxes that were recently reviewed:

(More swap site and general site updates coming soon!)

Love love love all the hard work that you put into this Liz.
I do have a suggestion—would it be possible to put up a “free” section?
There are often small things ie those darn tattoos or small samples that could just go in an envelope and would cost a stamp or two.
I’d be thrilled to send those to people that want them and I don’t want anything in return

Thanks so much Kim! And what a generous suggestion! I’ll add it to our list of features to work on. 🙂 (I’m not sure how easy it would be to implement since the system is built on a 1 for 1 swap exchange, but maybe there’s another way around it). If you have any other suggestions for how it should work let me know!

I have faith in you and Eric 🙂
You may already have this somewhere….an FAQ for the swap section?
For example the need to really consider shipping costs! I had no idea there were zones (yes I was rather silly). I traded a heavy mug for a scarf so the value was there but then I had to pay $12 to ship it across to the east coast.
Or encourage people to use the comment sections…..instead of just declining I had someone make another proposal that I accepted and it worked out so well for both of us. It’s sometimes hard to know the value (or perceived value) of items so I’d love to have someone say will if you drop x then we have a deal than just outright decline.

Again I am amazed by your website and all you do. 6-7 weeks ago I had no idea about any of this and now I’m immersed. Check your reviews at least twice a day and now subscribe to at least 10 boxes!

Chelsea

I haven’t received negative feedback but in other swaps I’ve done (craft swaps) there was a way to reverse negative feedback. I am wondering if this is an option to think about. For example, negative feedback due to not sending out an item can be reversed when a person sends out the item or an equivelant?

Thanks for your hard work.

Love the swap site! Have done over 60 swaps – mostly positive but have been burned a few times, but that’s ok! It was for small items!

One feature I’d love would be either a “last time logged into the swap site” or “last time they swapped with someone”. Recently I have requested a lot of items and there is never a response. So I have no idea if the person is an inactive trader or not.

I love this feature and I have been burned twice by swappers with less than 100%. My new rule for 2015 is not to swap with anyone with less than 100%. I work hard to maintain my rating and I love swapping soooo much that I’ve invested in beautiful packaging, extras and thank you cards! Cheers to Liz for all of her hard work! Thank you!

PS
One quick note on the MSA box….It was my all time FAVORITE box! Thank you for amazing curation and all of the time and effort, sweat, blood and tears that went into the box! I LOVED it and would subscribe again with my last dollar!

Thanks Liz! I appreciate this addition. I tend to stick to swappers that only have 100% positive feedback, so this helps. I often wonder if there’s a way to block a person from sending swap requests? I’ve had some people with lots of negative feedback send swap requests and I usually just decline. But, it would be nice to just have a block list so as to not have to bother with it. I hope this doesn’t come across as nasty because I don’t mean it that way at all. I just think it would be a good time saver for all involved.

Liz, I sent an email ages ago about it, but I was wondering if you would add 1Up Box to the swap site and the new geek directory? I’ve put items from there in other box listings, and I see others doing that too. Give us a home! 🙂

sorry about that – we’ll get on it! 🙂

How does one sign up to swap?

I figured it out, signed up for the wait list…..

I was given a negative review because I didn’t respond to emails the woman was sending me. This was the first month I was trading and didn’t have the system totally figured out, still don’t! One of the things was I thought if you were done , your interaction with that person was not as sharp looking as a new comment.
I completed the transaction but I can’t believe what an awful person she was. I am over 60, have a hard time with technology, have lupus and am often down for days at a time. Do I really need to let everyone know this?
I have been trading on ebay for years and have over 1000 transactions all positive. So this was really annoying. Is there anyway I can get this removed?

Jessica

Same thing happened to me! I am a top rated seller on eBay and yet since the swap site is so unregulated I received my first negative feedback ever. I guess it is the nature of the beast, but I wish there was something to be done.

Glad you added a geek category. I just started getting boxes and they are so much fun. I’ve had to cancel a few beauty boxes to fit the geek boxes into my budget. Yet has been well worth it. Lots of fun.

I don’t look at feedback most the time when I like an item. It is great you added this new feature. On negative feedback stuff happens, and if someone has at least 10 positive feedbacks after 1 negative feedback, I take the risk and swap with them, unless there are valid reasons in the negative feedbacks not to swap. To me communication is the most important thing.

I think this is great! Unfortunately with both of the negative swaps I’ve had (not receiving items) the rate was 100% before the swap. I think it would be great to have an option when you rate the swap to check if you never received the items and it’s been over 2 or 3 weeks so that the user can be looked into or kicked off the site if they are a repeat offender.

Liz, I would love to see the option of searching by item category under someone’s swap listings rather than having to dig through 15+ pages of items. I know other swappers have missed some of my earlier listings when choosing items since there’s no way to sort them. I would also love to be able to search for items using more than one keyword at a time. I know you have a million other things to attend to, but thanks so much for always being open to feedback!

I don’t know if this already exists, but can there be a buy it feature? Linked to lets say paypal? So if I don’t have anything to swap you for, we can negotiate a price and then I can just pay for it? Because I have to admit, I tend to hesitate reaching out to people when I don’t have what they are looking for. But if I could outright buy it, and use a reputable user friendly platform like paypal to pay for it, it would be AWESOME!

I understand the need for this feature, and a few other swappers have asked for it as well, but I am extremely hesitant to ever add a payment option. First, I’m worried it could change the atmosphere of the swap community on the site. The second reason is that while this is a free use-at-your-own-risk swap site, I still feel responsible for it, and I think adding a money exchange to the mix is too much responsibility. I hope that makes sense!

Geordana

I completely understand and respect your reasoning. It was just a suggestion. Personally it would have made the swap site more accessible considering I have cut down so much on my subscription boxes so I don’t have the items most people are looking for. Strictly trading could be an option regardless of wether a money option exists, so for the two ladies above that were so adamant of the buying option, that wouldn’t take away from the trading. Again, it was just a suggestion. I understand where you are coming from considering that whenever there is an issue people come to you. I’ve seen comments of people complaining about swaps gone bad, I am sure money would only aggravate that.

Sher

I appreciate your reasoning. All too often, money can change relationships, and this swapping community is mostly fun.

Emily

I would not like to see this feature added, personally. I find it really insulting when swappers suggest I might buy something. If I wanted to shop, I’d be on eBay. I’m here to TRADE.

Reply ButtonReply

sarah

I’m here to trade!!!

lily

That would be great. Sometimes I would like to buy the item. Yet there have been times sellers have asked if I wanted to buy the items, I thought it was nice of them offering, yet in a way it seemed in appropriate because it seemed as if they did not want to swap at all or wait till I got new items listed and keep the swap open a bit. I did not like that aggresive sales approach, after all this items are for swap. At that time I had 50 items listed. yet they did not seem interested in 1 of them

Danielle

I really appreciate this update. I’ve had some bad swaps where I made the mistake of not reading feedback first (I just trusted people before realizing you can’t do that with everyone!), and unfortunately now I really scrutinize everyone’s feedback before I decide to swap with them. I think a majority of people on the swap site are honest and great swappers, but there are bound to be a few bad apples. I think this update really helps avoid negative swapping experiences, so thank you!

Liz, thank you so much for adding the geek category! I just found out about the existence of subscription boxes one week ago, and I have used your site exclusively to learn all about them. My oldest son is turning 18 in a week and I have been here many times looking for geek type boxes! And I had just been hoping you would someday have that category!! So thank you! By the way, I signed him up for loot crate and I already got my first box, he is going to be SO excited about that Star Wars comic book!!

Ake

This is a great update. Thanks for adding it!

This may already be in the works, but I would love to be able to see who is following the items I have. Sometimes I’m looking to clear out my swap items items rather than get a specific item and it would be nice to see who wants what I have.

Thanks again to you and Eric for setting all of this up. I have so much fun “shopping” the swap site.

Reply ButtonReply

sarah

Yes that’d help in swapping for something I’m wanting to. I mean I can see if they are following an item if I pick them but also searching for somebody looking for the item…. especially in cases where there’s lots of the items out there would def help. and for new items popping up not that I haven’t followed. Like I’ll see an item send some requests then follow. Lol if that all makes sense

Reply ButtonReply

Emily

Just wanted to second this request! This would be a great feature.

Reply ButtonReply

Christine

I’ll third it. I’d love to offload some stuff even for lesser valued items just because how much freaking Purlisse does one need? I’m drowning in excess items yet I keep subscribing – do you think I have a problem? ha! But seriously it would be great to find people that want items I have and then start from there.

Jen

I agree! This would be a great feature.

Melanie

What a great addition to the site! I hadn’t had a thought to check feedback before. Thanks so much!

Nicole

Hey Liz, I signed up to join the swap site a while back and it said I would be put on a wait list. Do you know how long I should expect to wait? I just thought I would check. Thanks!

Reply ButtonReply

Liz Cadman

It should be about 2 weeks. Thanks!

What about people that are “inactive” on the swap site? There’s one person that has one feedback and has only swapped the one item and doesn’t respond to my requests or others. She seems to be inactive to the site. Maybe their items will pending or suspend or have a note hey they been inactive for 6 months or something??

Reply ButtonReply

Danielle

I like this idea, too. I’ve had a swap “pending” for months because the person won’t accept my cancellation request or respond to any of my messages.

Reply ButtonReply

HH

I think it’s a great idea to show when the last time was that a person was active.

Jessica

Thank you for your hard work with the swap site! I am so enjoying swapping and am continually touched by the cute extra touches swappers include – I regularly receive cards, notes, and extra samples and the items are often beautifully wrapped. I know occasionally things don’t work out, but I think the majority of experiences are very positive. Thank you so much for creating this forum that not only adds more value to our boxes, but quite a nice community as well!

Liz Cadman

Thanks so much for letting me know – I’m so happy to hear it! 🙂

Thank you for this, Liz, and thank you for running the site! While I was still wait listed to join it, I did a swap of a very expensive item with another commenter on MSA, and I never received my item! It is so disappointing, because they seemed like a very nice person, and confirmed several times that they were going to ship my item, even saying they would put a “bonus” in it, because it was expensive to ship and a higher value item than I was getting. Then they went dark, and I have not heard from them in over a month despite my emails. By contrast, all the swaps I have had through the swap site have been marvelous, every item received and everyone gracious.

If anyone has any advice for what to do about my missing item from the off-site swap, I’d love to hear it. It was the Alexander J perfume from Oui Please and it kills me to have paid to ship it for nothing.

Reply ButtonReply

Barbie

Girl, I feel you. I lost a $70.00 clutch to a girl. I shipped my item the same day as the swap, and waited about 3 weeks (emailed her with no responses) and finally complained. Once she got thrown off the site she started emailing me, said she’d send the item anyway “despite how rude I am being”.. and when I sent her the address and asked if she understood why I was frustrated she says “You know continuing to be rude isn’t your best bet bitch” .. and of course still never received anything.

Unfortunately you prob will not get a resolution and just learn a valuable lesson to not trust everyone. 🙁

I have had a swapper disappear once on me. But just kindly persisted and found out they somehow were unable to log in. It was over a month. Im sorry you had a bad experience. 🙁 wish you the best and that it works out. 🙂

Love the site, love the swapping – helps me obtain things from boxes I missed out on while offloading things I’ll never use.

I recently ran into an issue, I have an agreed to swap with someone who was new (0 feedback at time of acceptance, now she has 3) and I said I’d ship as soon as I got her tracking number. I’ve sent 5 messages over the past 10 days or so to let her know I don’t even have her address to send her items to and to let me know if she wants to cancel. What is a reasonable time to wait before cancelling, and what if she doesn’t respond to that either?

Reply ButtonReply

Liz Cadman

Hi Christine,

If you haven’t already, I recommend emailing her directly if messages from the site aren’t getting a response. (Sometimes our emails can get marked as spam by accident, and then that person won’t get any more emails from us unless they let us know).

If you’ve already done that, I’d say you can request a cancellation whenever you want. If she doesn’t accept the cancellation after a while, let me know. (liz @ mysubscriptionaddiction . com)

Thanks!

Christine

Thanks Liz I’ll give that a try too.

Thank you for your hardwork. Thanks to Eric also. He answered a couple of my questions, so I wanted to send a shout out 🙂

Thanks! I’ll let him know 🙂

Liz- similarly, is there anyway you can add a feature so that swappers can leave one comment (max) in response to feedback? Since there are no categories to rate swappers on your site, such as ease of communication, shipping time etc, sometimes negative feedback can be at a whim and misrepresentative. If you allowed for one response from the swapper to appear beneath the negative feedback it would give a full picture. My biggest problem with the swap site is that the only recourse is retaliatory negative feedbacks between swappers. For example, someone left me negative feedback saying I was “impatient and rude” because I pointed out the site said they needed to enter tracking first. It seems unfair that I can’t explain this situation on my own profile or appeal the negative feedback in anyway. Hope this makes sense, as I know the swap site is always a work in progress!

Reply ButtonReply

Ally

I think that’s a GREAT idea!

Reply ButtonReply

Tammy

Yes, that would be great, just a one time chance to present both sides of the issue. I haven’t had a problem yet, but sometimes point of view may be all that’s off.

Liz Cadman

Thanks for letting me know. It does make sense, and I appreciate the feedback. We’ll work on it!
