Ipsy Review - October 2014 Box

Ipsy is a monthly beauty and makeup subscription box. Each month you get full size or deluxe-sized products, plus a cute makeup bag. I think it’s one of the best value beauty subscriptions and a great way to build out your makeup collection on the cheap!

(FYI – Just like Birchbox, Ipsy sends out many different variations of their bag each month – so my review is just one of the bag variations you might receive!)

My Subscription Addiction pays for this subscription. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).

Ipsy Review - October 2014 Items

The Subscription Box: Ipsy

The Cost: $10 a month (free shipping)

Ipsy Review - October 2014 Indie Lee

Indie Lee Brightening Cleanser - .5 oz Value $4

Albertini International Warm Love Pumpkin Exfoliating Mask - .5 oz Value $2.30

I fell in love with this cleanser thanks to the latest limited edition POPSUGAR Must Have box - it's made with natural ingredients and smells like strawberries!

Ipsy Review - October 2014 Lip Gloss

Figs & Rouge Rose Berry Hand Cream - 20 ml Value $6.50

StarLooks Lip Gloss Mini in Guilt Pleasure - Value $4?

Skone Cosmetics Tattooed Waterproof Eyeliner - FULL SIZE! Value $15

This hand cream is very moisturizing, but I'm not sure if I love the scent yet. The starlooks lipgloss is surprisingly small for Ipsy, but still useable, and the eyeliner was pretty easy to apply - I'm a fan!

Verdict: This month my Ipsy bag has a value of about $32 - pretty low actually for Ipsy. I'm surprised to see there was only one full-size item in my bag this month, but I'm still pretty happy with this box because I like a lot of the brands they included. (I'll take an Indie Lee sample over a full-sized Be A Bombshell product any day!) (And of course the bag itself is cute!)

What did you get in your Ipsy bag this month?

I’m way late to this conversation, but this was my first ipsy bag, and I got the same as you. The turquoise is one of my favorite bags to date as far as bags themselves, and I really enjoyed the contents. At the time though I was sorely disappointed that I didn’t get more makeup or either of the fun nail polish choices and got tiny tubes of face wash and scrub instead. In hindsight, this was a good bag. I ended up using everything, loving the hand cream (cute tube!), gloss and eyeliner, and enjoyed the mask’s yummy scent even if I used it up in 2 uses. I am so glad I chose to join ipsy! I have gotten so many wonderful things. Thank you for posting about it!

As long as IPSY continues their current unethical and sleazy marketing practices, I will NEVER subscribe. I tried to subscribe, but was put on the wait list because of overwhelming demand. Oh but look, if I post to facebook to help them “grow the community” I can skip the wait list. Yeah, the logic of that move escapes me. I wrote to them to complain. They offered to let me off he wait list without posting. Yeah, again lack of logical consistency makes me lose faith in a company. Their reps were polite, but the (obviously) canned responses were an insult to my intelligence! I really wish more people would stand up to unethical companies like this!

I got the exact same Ipsy bag as Liz … my first subscription box EVER. At first I was disappointed but after using the products since October 10th I love everything in my bag except for the Warm Love (I may have gotten a sample without any actual scrubs in the exfoliant). I have purchased: the Smashbox primer I normally use with the Ipsy discount code, the lipgloss (sticky at first but I still find it fine and I love the color), the Indie Lee cleanser, and the hand cream (in a different scent because the Rose was sold out) for a friend who borrowed it from in my purse and loved it. I have since subscribed to BB5 (I am in Canada so am limited) and can’t wait to get more boxes!

This was my first Ispy and I loved it! I got a lot of the same items – loved the cleanser, hand cream (I got mango mandarin scent) and the eyeliner. I also got the gloss and the highlighter (the only thing I wasn’t really a fan of).

I loved my ipsy bag this month! It’s my 2nd month subscribing.

I got:

Nicole by OPI Nail Polish in ‘On A Gilt Trip’ – such a gorgeous matte gold, great for fall and the holidays

Ayres Patagonia Body Butter – the scent is light and the formula is really nice, not greasy at all. I want this in full size.

Indie Lee Brightening Cleanser – this stuff! I actually love it. Gentle on my skin, leaves me feeling oil-free. I also want this in full size.

Skone Tattooed Waterproof Eyeliner in black – I have been looking for a liquid eyeliner that works for me and now I’ve found it. I love that ipsy sent this in full size, and since I won’t use it every day, it should last me a while.

Noyah Lipstick in ‘Deeply in Mauve’ – this is the one item I was slightly disappointed with. The color is lovely, it feels nice and not too thick on my lips, BUT the sample is tiny and on me, it isn’t a long-lasting formula (lasted maybe half an hour of talking, sipping water). I will use it, but I don’t think I will be buying full size.

Two months in a row I have loved my bag. Can’t wait for next month. If they keep it up, I’ll never cancel!

I Have two subscriptions to this box, I took the quiz two times with different answers that work best with me.
Thee first box I received:
-Nicole by OPI in ‘Feeling Very Cherry’
-Èpicè Purifying Exfoliant
-Figs and Rouge Hand Cream in ‘Rose Berry’
-ModelCo Volumeyes Extreme Black Mascara
-Starlooks LipGloss in ‘Guilty Pleasure’
I love everything about this one except I’m a little on the fence about the hand cream, it feels like it doesn’t really moisturize and I’m not sure if I can get into the smell. Overall, love the box.

In my second box, I received:
-Nicole by OPI Nail Polish in ‘On A Gilt Trip’
-Noyah Lipstick in ‘Deeply in Mauve’
-Ayres Body Butter
-Indie Lee Brightening Cleanser
-Skone Tattooed Waterproof Eyeliner in black
I love everything in this one, no buts about it. And of course. The bag is cute!!! Can not wait until next month!!

The only other box I get is Luna For You and they shipped it to the wrong address in the wrong state and no one will get back to me about fixing the problem so I’m probably going to cancel that. Thanks to Ipsy for making my month!

I just signed up for Ipsy, I will be starting in Nov. Your 2nd bag is perfect, exactly what I would have picked for myself! I have tons of subs but for some reason, I never tried Ipsy. I liked October’s bag, so thought I’d give it a try.

I got *almost* the same bag! Mine came with…

Starlooks lip gloss: $4
I LOVE the color! Its a bit sticky, but the shade is perfect for my fair skin.

F&R hand cream in mango mandarin: $6.50
The scent is lovely.

Skone eyeliner: $15
Officially my new favorite liquid liner! The application was beautiful and precise, and it didn’t smudge or fade throughout the entire day.

Indie Lee cleanser: $4
I love the scent, and it left my skin feeling very clean and soft, but my tzone felt very tight the entire day. Not bad, but slightly awkward.

H2Glo highlighter: $15?
I HATED this highlighter. It lacks any pigment and left my skin looking like I’d just rubbed olive oil on it. 🙁

Total value was $49.50. I’m extremely happy overall with my items, and this was only my first month! And the bag they came in was super cute!

I love this and wish I could get it! Too bad I can’t wear makeup.

I received my bags, I have two accounts and my points items which were the gorgeous cream eye shadow, bare minerals eye shadow and the nyx smokey eye shadow pallet and my next bag should have 5-6 more points items meaning I have ALL there points items and all I did was post links to Facebook 5-6x and people are still joining with my links. Wow!!! Right now I have 14,000 points. The thing is on my other account I bought nothing with points but only posted my link once. With my other account the first time I posted I have many people join so I hope that link works and I can post the link and get more freebies of the same items and it will be great for gifts.

All being said that $10 for Ipsy is worth it because my bag value plus point freebies = approx 105 for 1 bag !!! 🙂

I am glad that Ipsy encourages us to post the link and allows it BUT Birchbox blocked me for posting my link to there facebook. Granted I got 2 people signed up and earned 100 points ($10) and the mystery sample 2 pack but NOW I am no longer able to post or leave comments and cannot see everything. I am disappointed that they did that. It is not like I posted anything from another company.

I really liked the bag and contents. I got a full size Nicole for opi nail polish – the shimmery champagne color called on a gilt trip, a full size NYC big bold curl kool color mascara, 1 oz. AYERS by Patagonia body butter w/essential oils of jasmine and rosemary, 1 oz. Epice purifying facial exfoliant and the starlooks guilty pleasures lip gloss which is perfect purse sized and a fall color. I’m very happy with the value and products.

I got the same bag as you, Liz! I don’t care for the lip gloss, the smell is intoxicating and the color is lovely but it’s a bit heavy and sticky for me. I also won’t use the liquid liner, I can’t for the life of me figure those things out! I didn’t care for the smell of the hand cream at first but the rose scent lingers and it smells great! Plus it leaves my hands super soft. Over all I liked the bag, but again, I’m not as impressed with this subscription as I thought I would be. I think I may cancel by January.

I just joined Ipsy and you really have to jump through hoops to get off their waitlist…. Wow

Kristy

I know right!!!! I had to open accounts just so i could do it!!!! To be honest when companies do that I usually don’t do business with them. To me i find it really shady and to some extent feel almost bullied into it. I should’t have to be forced to do things when i’m trying to purchase their products. Either way though i did it b/c i wanted to get the make up samples.

I received

Ecru Acacia Protein BB Cream for hair 1fl.oz.
I can’t stand the way it smells

Noyah lipstick in Deeply in Mauve
Nice color, but smells like cheap lipstick

Fig and Rouge hand cream in Mango Mandarin
It’s okay, I’ll use it, but it’s not amazing

Jesse’s Girl Mineralized Baked Powder Eye Shadow in Graphite Frost
Nice color and seems to wear well

Indie Lee Brightening Cleanser
Smells amazing and I’m excited to use it

I’m getting pretty irritated with how long my ipsy bag is taking to get here this month.

Reply ButtonReply

Linds

First month subscribing, pretty pleased with my box.

Doll 10 Beauty H2Glo Highlighter , $13.50 – Very strong smell that I don’t love, but I’m excited to get a highlighter since I have no idea what it is or how to use it, and exploring this stuff was kind of my ipsy goal.

Figs & Rouge Hand Cream in Mango Mandarin, $6.50 – Meh, hand cream. I work in a hospital, so not super useful. Will probably gift it.

Indie Lee Brightening Cleanser, $4 – Excited about this, since it gets amazing reviews. Debating if I want to save it for travel or see what the hype’s all about.

Skone Cosmetics TATTOOED Waterproof Eyeliner, $15 – Had never used brown eyeliner or liquid eyeliner, and this was both! I really like it – and I still had a clean line after standing under the water in the shower for a few minutes, so definitely waterproof.

Starlooks Lip Gloss in Guilty Pleasure, $4 – Kind of sticky and the color is way too pink for me, but at least it’s small.

So ~$43 value and at least three products I’ll use and one to gift. Plus I’ll learn 2 new girly makeup skillz. Good first month, I think!

I got the Exact same bag as you! I was excited to get the highlighters because this is a major staple for my beauty routine. I agree the smell is a little medicinal. I use this product for tops of cheek bones, under my eyebrows for a brow bones highlighter, and on the inside of my eye area.
I’m usually only a fan of eyeliner pencils that go on super smooth, but this pen was VERY easy to use!

I’m getting the same bag-not sure of the scent on the hand cream. I’m hoping it’s mango-mandarin. If I get the rose one I know someone that loves roses though. This will be my first, and I love the color of the bag itself. I was hoping for more make-up and full-sized, but I’ll have fun, and I’m exciting to hear the cleanser smells like strawberries! I will enjoy that! Love your reviews! I want all the boxes now. I’m just doing Ipsy and BB5. 2 at a time is my limit. :>

Both my ipsy bags
One is marked specifically for skin care/rarely wearing makeup and the other Specifically makeup.

Skin care bag.

Exfoliator (forget the brand)
figs and rouge hand cream
H2glo highlighter
starlooks lip gloss
mica eye shadow

(no face mask or cleanser I specifically marked both.)

I am still happy though!

Ipsy bag 2

Model co mascara
city lipstick
skin iceland cleansing cloths
h2glo highlighter
figs and rouge hand cream

I specifically had Pore issues on both and primer on one acct. I always want to try items for my pores!! I always rate them highly. Like my dr brandt pores no more.

I would have loved that Smashbox pore primer and the face cleanser/ the mask or Ayers body butter and OH I had nail polish marked on one account and they offered two brands of nail polishes this month and I did not receive. I am still pleased!

The quiz is kinda iffy but I received no repeats and complete opposites on both accounts last month.

I think my value for both bags is approx $80

Your 2nd bag is the same one I got. Everything was a hit, but the highlighter. I especially loved the Skyn Iceland Glacial Waters Cleansing Cloths. They smell divine!!!

Reply ButtonReply

Brandy

The cleansing cloths do smell amazing!
Some say it is too strong but it is perfect for me.
I only had one other makeup remover cloths so those come in handy.

The city lipstick I hated as it is drying, tastes bad and the color washes me out but I really like the Starlooks lip gloss a lot. 🙂
The epice exfolliant is nice and the hand cream in.mandarin mango smells divine. I am a fan!
The highlighter barely shows up on my skintone. The Mica eye shadow, shimmery is pretty but not blending well for me and the Model co mascara is nothing special at all. I would not pay $20 for the full size as the Urban Decay and Benefit work better.

My favorite items were the Epice exfolliant, the cleansing cloths, the Mandarin mango figs and rouge hand lotion, the mini starlooks lip gloss. I wont get any use from the city matte lipstick (hate) the highlighter or the eye shadow. I will use the mascara on occasion but not my favorite.

I want to try the Face cleanser, Smashbox pore primer and face mask. I also hope to try Ayres body butter.

All in all I am thrilled to discover new beauty items. I find that I end up loving more skincare in Ipsy then anything else. There makeup just feels so cheap, besides one or two items each month and I have loved almost all the skin care, etc. Suprised I did not get the nail polish and kind of happy I did not get perfume or hair care. 🙂 I really enjoy Ipsy and the cute bags!:-)

I have been subscribing since May and still have not received a nail polish 🙁

Dootsie Bug

So my bag was a little different. Still, very low value for Ipsy. I was pretty pleased with my bag. Honestly, I was just really happy I didn’t get that awful Revlon mascara.
Same hand creme – $2.50
Same lip gloss – $4 ish
Jesse’s Girl baked eyeshadow (full size) – $4
ECRU hair BB creme (can you call this full size if they sell it at this size?) – $12
Skyn Galacial Cleansing Cloths – $5

Reply ButtonReply

Starry

The hand cream is $6.50 value, not $2.50. MSA used the wrong product in their calculation.

Also, am I alone in HATING that their current makeup gurus all look exactly the same? Honestly, they could all be clones. And even though their makeup styles range from “nautural” to “drag”, I feel like their styles are just so similar that it seems pretty pointless to have them all around.

Reply ButtonReply

Misha

I have been noticing how kinda creepy they look. I feel super bad thinking this but they do all have a WAY overdone look that makes you not able to tell how they actually look. I would love to see their curators showing off great “natural” makeup looks where you still can tell they are wearing some but they just look pretty, or sun kissed. I don’t know how many of their actual subscribers wear so much makeup they look like drag queens…

Also,

Liz- Ipsy charges tax for us in CA, idk if that would be pertinent info for all subscribers, but the cost for me is actually $10.80. Just an FYI

Valerie

I don’t subscribe but this is one review I always read when you post. I absolutely love the bag with this one. The design and color are gorgeous. Maybe it’s time I finally jump on board and get this one…

I got my bag yesterday and I was extremely happy with it. I received:

CityColor Be Matte Lipstick (I love the shade) $5
ECRU BB Cream for Hair (originally thought it was a face BB) $12
Figs & Rouge Hand Cream (I have one of their lip glosses and LOVE it) $6.56
ModelCo Mascara (I will probably gift as I’ve got a gazillion mascaras)
Skyn Iceland Cleansing Cloths (great for traveling) $15/30… so $5

Total Value: $28.56 plus the cute cosmetics bag

Cindy

Forgot to include the price of the mascara….$20…

Total Value $48.56

I tried changing all my settings about mid sept. Hoping for the eyeliner this month, but I am going to get mascara! I am not super happy with my bag just looking at the glam room.(bb cream for hair, hand cream, nyc mascara, cleanser towels, starlooks lip gloss) I will have to update once the bag is in my hand. I usually like it a little more once I see everything in person. Overall ipsy has been kind of a let down lately. It could also be that I am just getting overloaded with samples and such from my many boxes. My dream ipsy bag would have been….eyeliner, opi, noyah lipstick, Indie Lee, and the highlighter. I just need to figure out my setting to get a bag that is a better fit for me.

This was my third month with Ipsy and I’m actually fairly happy with it this month and there’s only one thing that I will put into my swap pile:

Figs and Rouge in Mango Mandarin..I agree with who said it was “wet”, it felt really watery, but it will go in my bag and get used for sure.

Skyn cleansing cloths. I use cleansing cloths all the time so these will get used up, although I can’t say I’m overly impressed with them. They’re super soapy, I definitely feel like I have to wash my face afterwards so these aren’t ones I’d be able to take camping or something.

City Color lipstick. I don’t wear lipstick (I’m an adult that prefers gloss, shock, horror!) and it’s a color that wouldn’t work for me so into the swap pile it goes.

Doll 10 Highlighter. This is nice and something I didn’t already have in my make up collection already so I’m happy to have it.

Hair BB Cream. I like all hair things so I’m happy to have gotten this too, although I feel like I used it today and had a terrible hair day. 🙁

I LOVED the bag this month, although I agree that it didn’t really feel “October-ish”. I think the theme COULD have worked, but it didn’t seem to… maybe if it seemed more Halloween-wish? Overall, I’d say this is my favorite bag I’ve gotten so far. From what I see their November and December bags have a history of being great so I’m going to hold out until the end of the year then decide if I want to cancel or not.

I am so glad that I was not the only person that thought that. I wont trade that. It was just felt icky going on. I already tossed it. But for the most part I am happy with this bag. The wipes I don’t use but I love their eye cream so I will give them a try.

I cancelled Ipsy a couple months ago bc they mostly send out products that are from unknown brands or just drugstore brands. I still don’t miss Ipsy, but this is the best looking bag from them that I’ve seen. Love it!
