Hero Crate Subscription Box Review - October 2014 Box

Hero Crate is a new subscription box in the geek/gamer category. (This seems to be the subscription box category that is exploding this year - and my husband couldn't be happier!)

Hero Crate Subscription Box Review - October 2014 Yoda

Yoda Travel Mug - Value $10? (Couldn't find this online)

Yoda Plush - Value $9

Well, as you can tell - the hero for this month is Yoda! (You can check out the heros for the last two months here).

Hero Crate Subscription Box Review - October 2014 Tee

Little Green Jedi Master Tee - Value $18?

I think I've finally figured out why geek boxes send so many "mash up" tees - I'm guessing they can be considered parody and therefore not subject to copyright law?

Hero Crate Subscription Box Review - October 2014 Sticker

Yoda Patch, Pin and Sticker - Value $4?

Verdict: First off - I hope they start including an info card in future boxes. I'm so used to them now that when a box shows up without one it feels like something is missing! I like the idea of this box a lot - and it's a unique take on the geek/gamer box, which I think is needed if you want to enter the category at this stage in the game. It's definitely a little more of a gamble than your typical geek box though - if you don't like the particular hero for the month, the box is a loss. And of course on the flip side, if you love the hero then jackpot!

By my calculations this box has a value of about $41. They promise a value of $50 or more each box, so I'm guessing some of these products may have higher retail values than what I've found or estimated. It still is a good value for the $30 price point if you like everything.

My husband isn't a big Star Wars fan (but we have a friend who is and loves it when we get Star Wars items in boxes), so hopefully next month's box features a hero he will love. (Pretty much any Marvel character will work!)

What do you think of Hero Crate?

It arrived today. I don’t want to spoil it for anyone. I am going to have one very happy 15 year old son.

Did anyone receive this yet? My box was to arrive on Monday, but finally reached the other post office today. It should be here tomorrow or Thursday. It shipped 11/14 2-day USPS.

I live on the wrong side of the Burgh for mail service. You are always receiving packages before me LOL. I hope my LLB box will show up tomorrow which is also 2-day. Can’t wait to see if it is Zelda or Mario.

I watched the teaser video with my 15 year old son. The music is the sound that the NES makes. The written line at the end of the screen is from the first Zelda game. His vote is Zelda. Of course I had to order it.

I loved the first 3 boxes. I wish there was a way to order those 🙂 I am thinking about this box. I think my hubby would love it! The Nintendo theme seems fun for next month. I guess I better decide soon, only a few days left to order!

Liz do you know how the shirt fits? Does it run true to size?

It seems to be on par with other geek box shirt sizing (like Loot Crate and Nerd Block). Hope that helps!

I’m definitely going to have to grab this one next month. The hero may be Link from Zelda instead of Mario. Either one will be a great gift for my sons.

This is so cute and would be such a great gift for any Star Wars fan. I like that this focuses around ONE character/theme whereas other “geek” boxes tend to be a mismash of items. It makes these boxes great for giving (especially if they provide you with hints and spoilers). I’ll definitely be keeping my eye out for this, there’s some potential Christmas gifts to be had here!

Also just visited the site to see that Hero #1 was BATMAN! Ugh, that would’ve been a great box for ME! So disappointed to have missed that!

I am loving this new geek trend; it’s weird how subscription boxes seem to explode in a certain theme all at once. I mean, it’s not as if it’s easy to just create a business like that, so the fact that many people do the same idea simultaneously? Bizarre. Well, this isn’t the box for me because I also don’t care about Star Wars (though I could probably recite the lines from every original Star TREK episode!) and care even less about heroes, especially superheroes.

However, if someone is reading this and looking for start-up ideas, I’d LOVE a “Villains” box! 🙂

Here’s something interesting, Shanna. If you look at the bottom of Hero Crate’s website, it says “(C) 2014 HEROCRATE… (C) 2014 VILLAINCRATE”.

The great thing about Hero Crate is that it’s not a subscription and they give you hints so if you don’t like the box you don’t have to order it, that’s what I got from their website, and next month is probably Mario so I’am for sure ordering that one.

I wish I would’ve grabbed box 1! This looks like a box I’d enjoy so I may be signing up for the next box, plus the ‘hint’ is that it revolves around a classic video game hero. The photo has a picture of an NES controller, so my guess is Mario?
