Birchbox Review – August 2014 “The Everygirl Box”

Birchbox Review "The Everygirl Box"

Birchbox is one of the original beauty sampling subscription boxes, and I think it will always be one of my favorites. Sometimes the samples are smaller than I would like, but I’ve discovered a ton of my favorite beauty brands thanks to Birchbox, and they have one of the best reward systems. (For every item in your box you review, you get 10 points ($1) to spend in the Birchbox shop).

Birchbox Review - August 2014 "The Everygirl Box" First Look

This month Birchbox let you pick one of your samples or select "The Everygirl" curated affordable luxuries box. I have two subscriptions because I can't get enough Birchbox, so I got one of each. This review is of the The Everygirl box.

Birchbox Review - August 2014 "The Everygirl Box" Info

Each box comes with a card detailing the items included and some tips on how to use them.

Birchbox Review - August 2014 "The Everygirl Box" Benefit

Benefit They're Real Push-Up Liner - .1 g Value $1.80

This eyeliner was the main reason I had to get this box. Whoever does PR from Benefit deserves an award because I have seen this eyeliner promoted everywhere for the past month and I've been dying to try it!

Birchbox Review - August 2014 "The Everygirl Box" Liner

The sample is super tiny, but I guess they just want you to try the applicator and the formula, so this single-use sample is enough. The actual full-size product has a twist base, butwith this little sample you have to squeeze the sides of it to get the formula to come out. After getting over my slight frustration with figuring out how to use this sample, I was able to apply the liner and I'm pretty thrilled with the results. It was super easy to apply a line that hugged my lashes. And so far the formula hasn't budged.

I saw a few reviews of this product mention issues with the formula clumping. That wasn't the case with my sample - and I'm hoping that won't happen with the full-size version either. I'll be spending some Birchbox points on the full-size version of this liner!

Birchbox Review - August 2014 "The Everygirl Box" Scrub

No. 4 Super Comb Prep & Protect - 1 oz Value $4.80

Acure Brightening Facial Scrub - 1 oz Value $3.75

I really like both of these brands (Acure is one of my all-time favorites) so I know I'll use both of these samples. I already have this facial scrub in full size, so I'm saving the mini for my upcoming vacation. (Subscription boxes are so great for travel packing!)

Birchbox Review - August 2014 "The Everygirl Box" Perfume

Harvey Prince Hello Perfume - Sample Value $1

Not Soap, Radio Happiness Inducing Body Wash - 1.5 oz Value $1.75

This Not Soap, Radio brand is the only new-to-me brand in the box, and I was happy to learn that their body washes are paraben, phthalate and sulfate free! The scent wasn't exactly the fresh lemon citrus scent I was expecting, but I like it!

Verdict: I paid $10 for this box and received about $13 worth of products. It's on the lower end of values for Birchbox, but it's a great value for me. I really wanted to try the Benefit eyeliner before committing to a full-size purchase, so that's a win, and the other samples are good sizes I'll use for travel. Plus I'll review this box and get $5 worth of points to go toward my eyeliner purchase!

Did you get the Everygirl Box this month? Or the pick-your-sample box? What did you think of it?

From what I am understanding is the people all get different things in the “Everyday Girl” box? Is just the regular Birchbox the same?

By the time I saw the email, the everygirl box was all out. As bummed as I was, I think I ended up getting the right box. I LOVE that there was dry shampoo in there, as I have been dying to try it. I love the Noir eyeliner I got, seeing as it is a full sized eyeliner. The only thing I wish was different is that the Stainic lip stain actually showed up on my lips. Really wish I could get atleast one nail polish too!

This is our 3rd month with BirchBox. Both my sister and I received emails to select our choices. I went with the EveryGirl box. My sister selected the eye shadow. She received her box last week. I finally received my box today!

I will be using the #4 because my hair is color-treated and the ends do bleach out from the sun. The Acure scrub is perfect for me began it is sulfate and paraben-free, organic etc. I can use it without agitating my rosacea. I like the Not Soap and Harvey Prince scents. I can’t use the eyeliner. This is a great box for my needs.

My sister got an amazing box. She received the Neil George shampoo and conditioner, Nugg Beauty Revitalizing Face Mask, Harvey Prince Ageless Body Creme, and the creme eyeshadow which is what she selected as her choice. She is very happy with her box.

Ugh… I am so so dissapointed with this box. I chose this box specifically for the eyeliner. If it was going to be single use, they could have at least had it be the same pkg. I have been holding back from buying this because the reviews said the twist dispensed too much product and left eyeliner clumpy. How can I make an informed decision with a tiny little, not even the same pkg as the full size, sample? All the other products are things I received in the last month or two. Hello perfume again…. hello? please stop sending this to me. I knew it was coming but I was willing to take the hit for the eyeliner. What a waste of a box.

Can you have more than one Birchbox subscription?
I would love to have two boxes every month.

Yep – I just had to create two different accounts w different email addresses. Hope that helps!

I’m so disappointed that the Benefit liner is single use, it was the reason I ordered this Everyday Girl box….and also that I already received the Number 4 hair product in my July Box. (sigh)

Vanessa

Same here. One use seems kind of chintzy. I knew it would be a small sample but that’s tiny! Oh well. I also got the No. 4 product last month too. I guess like Liz said in her post, its a chance to try the eyeliner before spending the full amount on it. If its as good as everyone says, I am buying it. I have been trying to perfect my cateye for a long time. I can never get it quite right.

I loved my box! I got an anti-wrinkle serum, the prep 4 leave in conditioner, the shaving cream, stainiac and sample if Harvey Prince Ageless which is the most divine scent ever. Also received Stainiac and love that on my cheeks…the serum is expensive and that makes the value worth it for me!

Definitely didn’t get an option to choose boxes, and I’m not a reviewer or anyone “important” but come on, I spend my hard earned money. Definitely disappointed for about 3 months in a row now. I’m over BirchBox.

How is everyone picking their samples or box? This is the second time they have offered to let you choose your samples and I still have yet to receive any email or can find a link on the site that lets you choose. I am about ready to cancel them for the second time.

nicolle

It seems a lot of subscribers haven’t been getting the emails to choose the samples (including me). I was upset when I heard you got to pick for last month, so I actually called in to BB this month when I still didn’t get an email. They let me pick over the phone but couldn’t figure out why I was not getting the emails. I hope they resolve the issue soon b/c I really don’t want to have to call in every month.

Brandy

I wasn’t given option the first month because I never got that email.

The second time I got the email and the every girl box was sold out fast. I was upset.

So for my box this month I received Stainiac, Harvey Prince body creme, Marcelle glowing BB cream and shampoo and conditioner. I forget the brand.

The only good thing about shampoo samples is that they are good for travel. Nonetheless I prefer my own brand. 🙂

This was one of my favorite boxes to date. 🙂

I haven’t tried anything but the body creme. Awesome!! But the others have great reviews (besides the shampoo set).

Hm, for some reason I wasn’t given an option to choose anything about my box and I didn’t get the Every Girl box either. Are you guys VIP members?
Mine has Juliette Has a Gun Not a Perfume, Marcelle BB Cream Golden, ModelCo Bronzer, CAILYN Cosmetics Dizzolv’it Makeup Melt Cleansing Balm and Supergoop!® Forever Young Hand Cream with Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 40.

Reply ButtonReply

Brandy

They have not sent me any popular samples. I have not received super goop, the number 4 line, the other popular hair brand ?) Haven’t received nail polish, only 1 Marcelle product. Never received a face cleanser I have marked on my survey, only 1 face cream, one lotion. I have 3 perfumes, tons of shampoo and conditioner, 3 lip items.

I see people getting great things I wanna try and I never received. I’ve only gotten 3 makeup items minus the bb cream. Ive received body wash I do not want and even shaving cream. I swear my box is never worth $5-10 since 80-
-90 % I won’t use.

Reply ButtonReply

Sneaky Burrito

I got SO MANY hair products from them. Products that were nearly always wrong for my hair. Didn’t matter whether I had them marked on my survey or not. And every single box I got had highly-scented lotions or body butters in it. Again, didn’t matter what my survey said. (I can’t use such items as many of them give me a rash.)

I did get Supergoop eye cream. I liked that it had SPF but it wasn’t very good as eye cream, didn’t get rid of the puffiness at all.

I realized a month or two ago that I wasn’t using a lot of my samples and I didn’t care that much about most of the stuff in the shop (so the points were no draw, plus I can get comparable products during ULTA sales for less money), so I quit. I’m not missing it.

PA Anna

I’m still waiting for my box to arrive. It was born on Friday. This is a good box for me because I will be able to use everything except for the mascara.

I got that body wash too, and it smells disgusting. At first I thought it had broken open in my box because the weird fake lemon smell was so strong without me even opening the bottle.

Bonny Adams

Yes, that helps a lot! Thank you! I don’t blame you..those points are important and makes the box worth it. One more question..lol. Does the points expire? I promise I won’t ask any more questions.

Blessedmommi

Hey Bonnie!

No worries about questions, I always have them myself 🙂

The points expire after a year!

Reply ButtonReply

Bonny Adams

Thank you, Blessedmommi! I will try that now. Is there a limited amount of time to do this?

Reply ButtonReply

Blessedmommi

Hi Bonnie.
The review window is open for a month from the 10-10 I believe. Which sucks if you didn’t get your box till the end of the month then you might forget and miss the window. I have. So now I get in a habit of reviewing my items even if I haven’t tried them or received them yet, to ensure I get my $5 credit.
Hope that helps! 🙂

Bonny Adams

I went with the Every girl box. This is my second box. The value seems low, but I will use everything in the box. I’m not sure how to do the reviews, but I need to figure it out so I can earn the points.
Thank you for explaining the push up liner…I would have never figured it out.

Hi Bonnie,

When you log in you should see a option listed under your account that says “box” click on that and it should show you your items for the month. Then you click on each item, select “write a review” and complete the survey. You are awarded 10 points per completed survey. Hope this helps!

Does the review process work the same with a gifted subscription? This is my first month of a gift subscription and I don’t see anything on my account page that takes me to a specific box. I received my box last week. Maybe because it’s the first box I’ve ever received?

misha

I got the regular box this month because I wanted to try some of the “pick one” samples. I got two boxes because I wanted to try the model co bronzer and stainiac lip stain. I ended up getting both in my first box! I was so surprised by that, but now I have two bronzer’s. Otherwise both of my boxes were great!

Blessedmommi

Hi Liz,

When you went to review this box were all your items listed? I went to review it and only 4 items were listed so I don’t have a full $5 review box :(. I guess I’ll contact BB and see what they say. Just curious to see if I was the only one or not

Leilana

I had this problem last month with the Sumita eyeliner, the review option just never showed up, so I contacted customer service and they resolved the issue for me. They just asked me to give a one or two sentence review in a reply email, and they credited my account.

Reply ButtonReply

Vanessa

Yes, same here. I ordered the Evergirl box and at first only 4 items were listed (the scrub was missing) but I just checked again and now all 5 items are there so it takes a couple days to upload. Bummed about the GC too! I just placed an order on my second account and closed it out. I really don’t need 2 accounts and I wanted to do the GC to combine but it wouldn’t let me… oh well!

Reply ButtonReply

Emily

I had that issue the other day it showed I only had four items but when I got my box I had five and then I checked again and they were all there so maybe check back in a day or so? I got the acure scrub benefit mascara ( which I’ve been dying to try) Catherine Malandrino fragrance sample ( not my favorite) the balm stainiac ( my choice) and key west aloe lotion in mango it smells really good. I think this us my favorite so far I love everything except the fragrance

Jessica

Hi,
I had the same prob and contacted BB about it. They just got back to me and said they are having a tech issue with it but are working on it now. The girl just went ahead and awarded me the 10points for the missing item. Also, when did that change with the gift card? I was just able to do that last month. 🙁 now my extra account isn’t as cool.

Reply ButtonReply

Blessedmommi

Hey Jessica,

They did it Jul 25 from what I understand in readin makeup forums about it. They never alerted anyone of the change. I contacted BB about it because I was trying to buy GC for the first time and they told me their policy has changed. You can’t buy GC with points but you will be awarded points when you buy GC.
It sucks because I have 4 accounts now and no way to combine the points. O well!

Sneaky Burrito

While I am not a current subscriber, I have seen that in the past. I gave it a couple of days and all the products eventually were listed. So just check back periodically and you’ll probably be fine.

Reply ButtonReply

Blessedmommi

Thanks Sneaky Burrito! I will check back and see.

I’m still bummed about the GC and how you can’t use points to buy them now, I was going to do it for the first time and now I can’t. 🙁

I should have bought the GC last month but I wasn’t sure if they expired or not. I guess I’ll keep my extra accounts for another month or so and then cash out my points. Thanks again for your help sneaky burrito!
