New Beauty Test Tube Subscription Box Review - July

New Beauty Test Tube is a bi-monthly beauty and makeup subscription box. Every other month they send you a tube full of deluxe and full size beauty samples and you also get a subscription to New Beauty Magazine. It’s a little pricier than other beauty subscriptions, but in general the value is usually incredible. (FYI – this is a different subscription from the QVC New Beauty Test Tube which ships every quarter).

New Beauty Test Tube Subscription Box Review - July 2014 Info

Each New Beauty Test Tube comes with a booklet thoroughly detailing each product included.

New Beauty Test Tube Subscription Box Review - July 2014 Magazine

The subscription includes a subscription to New Beauty magazine, but it ships separately from the box. (I really like this magazine, and it adds to the value of the box for me).

New Beauty Test Tube Subscription Box Review - July 2014 Philosophy

Philosophy Hope in a Jar for Body – 4 oz Value $12.50

Yon-Ka Vital Defense – FULL SIZE! Value $72

(FYI – in the booklet this Hope in a Jar for Body is listed as full size with a retail value of $65, but it looks like they accidentally used the regular Hope in a Jar moisturizer for the price, not the body version). Some reviewers on Sephora mentioned that they don’t like the scent of this lotion, but I really like it. (Something about it reminds me a little of suntan lotion?) and it’s a nice lightweight moisturizer. Plus it seems like in the last year or so Philosophy has removed all parabens, phthalates, etc. from their product ingredients!

The Yon-Ka brand is new to me, and I’m excited to try it. (I love when boxes send full-size versions of skincare products so you actually can use it for enough time to see if it works for you!)

New Beauty Test Tube Subscription Box Review - July 2014 Lumene

Lumene Firming Night Creme – .5 oz Value $6

Laura Geller Waterproof Eye Spackle in Light/Fair – FULL SIZE! Value $23

My mom really likes Lumene skincare products, so this little night creme is going right to her! (FYI – My booklet listed a full-size Lumene CC Cream instead of these night cream). And while I’m a little bored with getting Laura Geller eye spackle in so many of these Test Tube boxes over the years – it is a great eye lid primer so I shouldn’t complain too much!

New Beauty Test Tube Subscription Box Review - July 2014 Biosilk

Grande Face Lift – Foil Packet Sample

Biosilk Color Therapy Leave-In Treatment – FULL SIZE! Value $12.50

This month they didn’t include the bonus sample pack, but my Test Tube had this one Face Lift sample in the box. (I hope they get back to doing the bonus sample packs soon!)

I tried out the Biosilk leave in treatment, and I don’t notice any difference in the texture of my hair before or after applying it, but I guess it’s more about protecting your hair from UV rays.

New Beauty Test Tube Subscription Box Review - July 2014 Dove

Dove Advanced Hair Series Oxygen Moisture Shampoo & Conditioner – 2 oz total Value $1

Bliss Blood Orange + White Pepper Soapy Suds Body Wash + Bubbling Bath – 2 oz Value $2.50

I was not crazy about seeing Dove shampoo and conditioner in this box (I have color-treated hair, so I avoid hair products with sulfates, and most drugstore brands use sulfates in their shampoos). I am always happy to see Bliss Blood Orange + White Pepper body wash though – I love the scent!

Verdict: I paid $39 for this box and received about $130 worth of beauty products (not counting the $10 price of the New Beauty magazine). I think the value is great (even though over half of that is from the Yun-Ka moisturizer), but as someone who has subscribed to New Beauty Test Tube for years now, I really wish they would introduce more new brands and products in each box! I’m just not as excited about this box as I used to be. What did you think of the New Beauty Test Tube this month?

  1. Have you heard of any spoilers for the sept/oct tube? I ordered in Aug and they said I’d be getting mine in Sept

  2. I ordered this on July 19 and received it today despite living in the same state of shipping. It’s not what I expected. At the time of ordering I thought I would receive something similar to what was listed in the blog. I received the same items as Lynn. I’m cancelling because most of the items are useless to me.

  3. Dear Liz or anyone who can help me. If I order this in August will I receive this box since it ships 6xa year?

    Much thanks!!

    • Dear Liz,

I haven’t heard any opinion and waiting to hear back from New Beauty.

ThIs ships every other month and I NEED to know if I order this is Aug will I recieve the July box or have to wait and receive the Sep box. Please let me know if possible one way or another, even if you have no clue. Thank you kindly! 🙂

      • I ordered mine on July 19 and received it today despite living in the same state that its shipping from.

  4. I wasn’t sure if it was just me that was not impressed with Test Tube until I read these comments. This is only my second one and I’ll give it one last chance. I had to call 4 times after the first tube just to get my magazine. I liked it better when they cam together in the same package.

  5. I love Yonka products – they smell so fantastic with all the essential oils. My favourite is the Pamplemousse which has citrus tones. It is more expensive over here though – I have not seen any of their products for less than $90 AUD.

Thanks for fixing that partial feed thing, it is back and working and I am so glad to still be able to live vicariously through your posts as many of these boxes are not available in Australia. 🙂

  6. I received the last two of these Test Tubes. The first was wonderful, the second was a big disappointment. I looking forward to seeing what was in the next TT to see if I made a mistake.

Nope, I am glad I canceled.

  7. Do you tend to like your new beauty test tubes or your blush mystery box/bag better? The blush mystery seems to be a better value…

    • I like the
blush mystery bag much better! Very good value.

    • I have gotten 2 Blush bags and really enjoyed them! Beauty Test Tube was a fail for me, personally! I wanted to love it, but when I saw mine was different from what others received it made me angry. I know it is a gamble, but when you sign up for something, if they are sending different products, I think they should at least have you do a beauty profile of some type. Also, in the past everyone has pretty much gotten the same tube with just slight variation, so I wasn’t expecting completely different product. Just my opinion.

    • I like Blush MysTery box a lot. Every month I’m wowed by the items and value. Most are extremely Highly rated and the box is nearly $200 each month. No one can top it and mostly full sized items. Boxycharm is my second favorite at a great value. This tube from what I’ve heard is a win lose varies by month. The value is not as high either. I have yet to find an item that I don’t love or can’t use. Plus they often send a very nice freebie every few months and they include samples each month. Customer service is easy to reach and the best. Plus my order is shipped super fast and recieved in 2 days. Talking about awesome! ! 🙂

      • Please give Blush Beauty a shot and followed by boxycharm. Both great value and nice items. Blush is my #1 favorite and then boxycharm is my second Followed by ipsy.

The only three services I wont give up and neither will you. All three cost $61 a month and I recieve about $350-400 in value a month. Next in line Would be Glossy box that I really wanna try and lip factOry.

  8. I got a similar one to this but for me they included the IT powder brush outside of the tube. Thats the only thing that made it worth it to me.

    • I also got the strivectin brightening serum instead of the yon-ka

  9. I agree. Their products are getting very repetitive. My testtube was also very different. I received a full size Mally lip gloss which is the only thing I really liked. Everything else was items they have included before. It seems they send out that Lumene product constantly.

I might quit this subscription if it doesn’t improve soon! It used to be great.

  10. I was really sad to cancel after this month but I have noticed such a downward trend in quality products. I received a similar tube to but less products. This was my first sampling box from years and years ago. They started and then stopped for awhile. All I got from them when I cancelled after being a long time subscriber was, sad to see you go, one liner email. Would have thought they would ask for reasons etc.

  11. This is my 3rd Test Tube and I really like the concept but so many of my items were different from yours– I did not get the Philosophy, Bliss, Yon-Ka or Lumene. I received mine about 3 weeks ago, but I do like these “later” items better…

  12. I really feel like they’ve dropped the ball in this last year. The only time I’ve regretted unsubscribing was when they sent out the full size tarte blush earlier this year. They continue to send out pretty much the same items with a slight variation. They’ve sent out Dove haircare samples already, did it really need to be included in this one, too? I really hope they step it up soon : /

  13. Well this is the tube I thought was going to receive, but did not! I just got mine yesterday and it was some sort of “welcome test tube”. I paid full price and was under the impression that these are the products I would receive, but it isn’t even close. The products are all tiny sample size drugstore brands and the total value of the tube is way less than that of this one! The only two products that are the same are the Dove and the Biosilk. I have sent an email to new beauty, but have heard nothing back yet. This whole bait and switch situation is no way to keep new customers! Hopefully they will remedy the situation.

    • I didn’t know they were sending out “welcome” boxes. 🙁 Hopefully they apologize and fix the situation – keep us posted!

      • Well, I got the email back from New Beauty…they said 4 different tubes were sent out depending upon when you actually subscribed. They all are said to have similar value, but different contents. This is something new that they are trying. They basically said, “you get what you get” this is a sampling program, you don’t get to pick your tube. That being said, I highly doubt I will go forward with this tube. I was super excited about it because of all the great reviews. I was looking forward to the Philosophy sample, the Laura Geller, Yon-ka and even the Lumene night cream. Instead I received:
        Jergens BB Body 1oz ($2.99?)
Dove Samples (I have gotten 2 previous samples of this free from Walmart)
Revlon Age Defying wrinkle line filler (full size) ($12.50/on amazon for $6.95)
        La Roche-Posay Mela-D (.5oz) ($4.99?)
        StriVectin-EV Brightening Serum (1oz) ($52?)
Biosilk Lock & Protect (Full size) ($12.50)
        It Powder Brush ($48 value)
Amorepacific cushion compact tan .14oz ($9?)

The main value of my tube was a make up brush and the StriVectin. Most of the items are not regular sizes and I couldn’t find values for them, so I tried to do the math. I notice the Amorepacific is a free with purchase size many retailers are giving away. It isn’t horrible, but I wouldn’t have signed up knowing nearly half the value was going to come from a make up brush which I don’t need!

        • I signed up a couple days ago after seeing this review, but I actually really hope I get the makeup brush! The brightening serum sounds interesting too, but I don’t know too much about the StriVectin brand (and whether it performs well or not). Thanks for sharing about what you received (but sorry it wasn’t what you were hoping to get)

      • For some reason, if the may/June or this one was your first new beauty TT you got a completely different tube!! The only good thing we got was the IT cosmetics brush. Everything else was awful. 2 of the things I have gotten for FREE from pinch me!! Also, every higher value (ie not a sample) was for wrinkles and anti-aging which I do not need or can use. Totally dissapointed. It seems writing to them does NOTHING.

        • I wrote them back a second time and they said they would not switch out my tube, although I know there are other people who complained that were able to get the better tube. This was my first month, so I didn’t have the “I have been a subscriber in the past argument” at my disposal! If they continue to send out different tubes to different subscribers, shouldn’t they do some type of beauty profile? How are they making the determination as to who gets which products? Not sure I will go with this one again. The brush is nice, but I wouldn’t have paid the hefty price tag for this subscription just for the brush, and really a $48 value?!

    • I hope that doesn’t happen to me. I haven’t received a tracking number yet and ordered it on 7/19. Also when you click on Liz’s link it says 19.95. When you google the page it is 29.95. Anyone know why?
