Each box comes with a card detailing the items included for the month. This month’s theme is Surf’s Up Pups! (BarkBox is totally impressing me with themes lately – last month’s box was Paris!)

Think! Louisiana Crab Jerky Natural Treats for Dogs – Value $7

PetSafe Indigo Triple Chews – Value $10

I’m always impressed with the treats BarkBox includes – these are both made in the USA with natural ingredients. Plus our pup is pretty picky when it comes to treats, but he likes both of these! (Or to be more specific, he ate the crab jerky and is currently guarding – but not eating – the indigo chew).

Loopies Corduroy Whale Toy – Value $10

P.L.A.Y. Clam Toy – Value $10

Our dog Buckles loves little stuffed animal toys, so this whale was an instant hit!

Cool Treats Smoothies For Dogs – Value $2

We’ve tried this before and Buckles rejected it since it wasn’t made of meat. We’ll have to share this with a less picky dog!

Verdict:  We paid $17 for this box (6 month subscription) and received about $39 worth of items. It’s a great value at the discounted subscription rate, and even good for the monthly box ($29 a month). I’m always happy with the quality of items BarkBox includes, and our dog absolutely loves opening the box with us – it’s one of our favorite monthly boxes for that reason!

What did you think of the July BarkBox?

  1. I always appreciate someone posting a warning like this…..thank you Chels! We have had BB for large dog for awhile now and haven’t had this issue. We received something one month that was questionable and never gave it to her. For Sept and Aug it was heavy on the toys and lighter on the food which I wasn’t happy about. Our pup has a kazillion toys. Here is what we received for Sept. I will say she loves the sweet potatoes, however, how can I delicately put this, hmmm…..well when she does her business it is very evident that she has eaten the sweet potato chips.

    Safemade Pet Pawxford Pennant $7
Petsafe Indigo Smokehouse Strips – Bacon $7
Barkworthies Sweet Potato steak Fries $8
Etta Says Duck Chew – $4 this is one of those sticks that I don’t like to see, I am always afraid of choking and not sure if she will get this
    Fabdog Pom Poms $10

    • How big is your dog (since you have the large box)? And do you find the items size-appropriate? I’ve looked at reviews on other blogs for the large box and I sort of wish they did an extra-large dog box (my dog weighs 95 pounds).

      • She is a small lab female, but her weight just puts her over the edge to a large dog. I started her off with the medium box but my husband said to switch to large and that seems to fit her better. I agree with you, I have had a “large” dog in the past.

        • Probably the stuff in the box is too small for my dog, then. The largest sizes of dog toys are so expensive, they’d have to charge more for — or include fewer items in — an “extra large” box, and it’s not going to be worth it to them to offer something that there won’t be a big market for because of the cost difference.

  2. Indigo chews had to be thrown out… My dog wound up swallowing a piece that was too big… Thankfully he threw it up himself but the awkward size of the bottom part of that chew wasn’t ideal!

    • I wondered about that when I read the review. I remember awhile back (heck, it might’ve been 10 years or more at this point) when people’s dogs were swallowing Greenies whole and having to have intestinal surgery to remove the pieces. I can’t give my dog anything like that; she is the mistress of swallowing foreign objects and I don’t want to tempt fate.

Sadly, there are very few toys I can trust my dog with. I guess I will have to satisfy myself with cat subs only (which are pretty fun, of course).

  3. I am on my fourth box from a groupon deal. So far I’m mostly happy with everything we’ve gotten. I can’t remember the names of everything, but here are some standouts.

    Good Standouts
    * Barkworthies Beef bladder chew from May box. My pup LOVED this. It lasted longer than any other chew we’ve had. I’ve had a hard time finding this exact chew though.
*Freeze dried beef from June box. These quickly turned into his bedtime treat. I found a similar treat at a pet store to tide us over until I can order these again.
*Corduroy Whale from July box. This is one of his absolute favorites now.
*Green super squeaky ball from May box. Sadly lost it’s squeak after about a month
*Banana chips were also a huge hit.

    Bad Standouts
*SQUEAKERS! Quite a few squeakers have completely stopped working. I have a 10lb cavalier. He can’t do that much damage. The clam from July box wasn’t working out of the box.
*Crab treats from July box. He loves them, but they make me gag every time I open them up. Their smell is so very strong.
*Apple cobbler treats from May box were pretty much ignore.

I have been really happy overall. The value is definitely worth it. I spent well over the cost of the box on one trip to the pet store.

  4. Just want everyone to know that those Indogo tiple chew dog bones gave my little puppy a bowel obstruction!!! Just cost me $150 at the vet for x-rays and an enema to help him pass it all! It literally looked like blue paste when he threw some of it up. He was one sick little puppy! DO NOT feed your dog those bones!

    • omg…….that is terrible. Thank you so much for taking the time to let people know.

    • Glad to hear he is OK. That sounds like what happened with Greenies a few years ago (OK, maybe more than a few years) ago.

Sadly, my dog swallows all kinds of foreign objects. They’ve all passed (though once I did pay for X-rays, just in case), but I have to be VERY careful about what I let her play with. So, no sub boxes for her.

  5. Just a heads up, if you sub to the large box and got the benebone nylon chew, make sure you watch your dog very carefully! My 40 lb. husky had the end of this demolished in less than 5 min. and when I looked, the surface was SUPER sharp where she had left a bunch of teeth marks. Fortunately I watch her closely with new toys and chews but I can see that if she had another 10 min with that chew she would have taken the end off and swallowed it. I threw it away

  6. I get the large size although I consider my dog medium at about 50-60 pounds, but husband said to get the large and it’s been great. I can’t seem to get any better deal than $19/month for 6 months because i’m already subscribed when coupon comes out. When this runs out I will try and catch it and get the year since we don’t plan on ever stopping. I don’t have any repeats but some I wish we did. The only thing the same in my box is the pina colada smoothie and to my surprise Lucy wouldn’t eat it. She licked it for awhile then took it out of her bowl (we froze it) and just left it.
Here is what we received in our large dog box and I think anything here would be fine for a medium dog.

Loopies Fish Bones….a beautiful long blue fish. $15
Bixbi Daily Essentials Chicken Breast Jerky Treats $10
Healthy Dogma Coconut Flavor Barkers $8
    Etta Says Duck Chew $4
Mr. Barksmith’s Pina Colada Smoothie (we did have this in a previous box in another flavor but lost it) $2

I would never subscribe to this if I had to pay the full 29.

  7. My pup’s first box arrived. I got the April box. 🙁
The summer theme looked so fun.

    • I received the March box as my first box last month. I was disappointed because I loved the theme from June. The furbabies weren’t disappointed. Then this month I received the July box. This is through the Groupon deal. Is yours a Groupon deal or a regular subscription?

      • Yes, it was through the Groupon deal. The pups were ok with it, but I thought it would be better if they were going to do a repeat, to keep it in the same season. I, too, loved the June box. I have poodles! 🙂

  8. What is up with that Indigo treat?! My dog is doing the same thing. She is uber picky with treats but went buck wild when we gave her the Indigo treat. But she’s not eating it…she is just guarding it with her life! I went to take a picture and she grabbed it and ran away from me like a bat out of hell. So crazy!

  9. I subscribe to the medium BarkBox, I have a 50lb dog. This was our 2nd box through the groupon deal and I’m pretty happy about it.
    1. We got a crab stuffed toy which my dog loves stuffed toys so that was a big hit. 2. We also got the Bixbi daily essentials chicken breast jerky treats. 3. The Indigo triple chews. 4. And the Healthy Dogma Blissful banana crisps which was only made with bananas and coconut oil which was pretty cool. I was a little nervous that our dog wouldn’t like the banana chips but so far so good.

    • Lol, my dog won’t touch those banana treats, but my husband loves them!

  10. I have subscribed for around 6 months and typically love it… The past 3 months have included practically the same items just slightly different flavors so I’m a bit bummed about that. Last month we even got an exact duplicate 🙁

  11. This is box 2 of the Groupon deal. This is a medium-size dog box that is shared by a 15 lb dog, a 45 lb dog, and a couple of cats. They were circling the box as it was being opened. Last night the cats were playing in the box.

    1. Harry Parker Play Shark Large Toy – My small dog decided it was hers. It is the size of her body! My big dog will take it back later. This is a sturdy toy.
    2. A Pizzle stick which is being saved for later.
    3. Indigo Triple Chews medium size – Both dogs enjoyed them.
    4. Cool Treats Pina Colada. My small dog ran off with it.
    5. Bixbi Daily Essentials Chicken Breast Jerky Treat. This must be what the cats were smelling. Both the cats and dogs had a treat.
