Mantry Food Subscription Box Review - June

Mantry is a subscription box that describes itself as “the modern man’s pantry.” Each month they ship your gourmet food in their signature wooden crate.

Mantry kindly sent me this box to review.

The Subscription Box: Mantry

The Cost: $75

The Products: The Modern Man’s Pantry: a Food of the Month Club that helps you discover American artisan food.

Check out all of my Mantry reviews and the Food Subscription Box Directory!

This month the box features products inspired by the sea! (AKA sea salt, fish etc).

Mantry Food Subscription Box Review - June 2014 Info

Each box comes with a fold out card detailing each of the producers behind the food included and where they come from.

Mantry Food Subscription Box Review - June 2014 Half Pops

HalfPops Butter & Pure Ocean Sea Salt - Value $4.29

White Whale Cocktails The Filthy Liar - Value $10

Both these items will be a hit with my husband. He loves HalfPops, and The Filthy Liar is a cocktail mix for gin - his liquor of choice. (I will have to try this cocktail mix too - I like that it's made with natural and organic ingredients!)

Mantry Food Subscription Box Review - June 2014 Fudge

Coop's MicroCreamery Hot Fudge - Value $11

Liddabit Sweets Sea Salt Caramels - Value $8

OK - this is officially the most delicious packaging I've ever seen. I couldn't help myself and had to smell the melted wax on this jar of fudge, and it turns out my instincts were right - the wax is even chocolate scented! I can't eat it unfortunately because it's made with dairy (or fortunately because I'm sure I would eat the entire thing), but I discovered that they also make a vegan version!

Mantry Food Subscription Box Review - June 2014 Chowder

Island Trollers Wild Pacific Albacore - Value $8

Bar Harbor New England Style Clam Chowder - Value $4

I received a different brand of Clam Chowder in another Mantry from a while ago I believe and gave it to my brother since he's a big Clam Chowder fan - looks like he's getting more this month!

Verdict: This box has a value of about $46 - I think it's the lowest value I've seen for an Mantry box. (It's typically always less than the $75 price point, but not by that much). I think it's OK for the value to not be really high for this box since it's more about the curation and presentation, but I would have liked it to be a little higher. As always, I do really like the curation - they do find the best brands of every food category!

What do you think of the June Mantry box?

I love all these products, but am so glad, I skipped purchasing it. By my estimate all of these items can be purchased for $45 at my neighborhood(albeit, snooty, upscale)grocery store. I politely disagree, that boxes are mostly, about curation. Considering, that these items have already been purchased in bulk at a discount. Losing $30 bucks on a retail value of a box is enough for me to cancel a subscription. There simply has to be a breaking even or a savings value. Mantry, has really been failing in the value department and I think it should be addressed. Anyone, else feel the same way?

ABSOLUTELY! This box was on my wish list, but not anymore! Value HAS to be there, as it is very rare that every item in a subscription box is a hit….with so many misses, I need to be getting a lot more than my dollar’s worth to be trying products I’m not thrilled about! For $75 I could take myself and a friend out for a great dinner, plus dessert!
