Beauty Box 5 Subscription Box Review - May 2014 Card

Each box comes with a card detailing the items included for that month.

Beauty Box 5 Subscription Box Review - May 2014 Mask

Maskeraide Weather Warrior Hydrating Facial Sheet Mask – Value $6

I got to try one of these Maskeraide masks a few months ago from another box and I love the brand – their formulas are natural, paraben-free and also free of any synthetic fragrance. Also I think they work pretty well too!

Beauty Box 5 Subscription Box Review - May 2014 Eye Liner

Harvey Prince Hello Perfume – 2 ml Value $2

Cattiva Retractable Waterproof Eye Liner – FULL SIZE! Value $20

While I don’t get too excited about black eyeliners, this one goes on SO smoothly – I’m a fan!

Beauty Box 5 Subscription Box Review - May 2014 Refresh

Ban Total Refresh Cooling Body Cloths (3) Value $1

H20+ Aqualibrium Marine Cleansing Gel – 8 ml Value $1.20

It seems like every once in a while Beauty Box 5 gets stuck on one brand and sends them out for several months. I think they need to break their H20+ habit!

Verdict: I paid $8.25 for this box (annual subscription) and received about $30 worth of items. I’m happy with this box – and most excited about the full size items – so that’s good!

What did you get in your Beauty Box 5 this month?

  1. This month BB5 sent me the mask, the perfume sample, the eyeliner, the H2O sample, and the cooling cloths. Over all I am not pleased. The eyeliner did not perform well and the other samples were really small or a single-use item. Hopefully June is better.

  2. I would have been excited to get the eyeliner. Nothing in the box was worth keeping or trying. The eyeliner might have made it worthwhile.

  3. I’m on the fence with BB5 first I don’t understand how they bill for a 3 month subscription. They billed me 3/31 and 5/1 makes no sense.

I got the same box as Liz and do not like anything EXCEPT the eyeliner is amazing. yes, black eyeliners are in all the boxes, but none have been working for me, this one is a win. Applies super smooth, will see how it wears today. So that alone was worth the price. The ban wipes I’ll be passing on as I can’t do powerdy scents, the perfume is awful for me, and I won’t use the mask, am on a strict skin care program right now.

  4. I got my first box today and I love it! I definitely got a great value for the $8.25 price. I got a generous 1 oz bottle of the Shea Terra Rose Hips Black Soap Deep Pore Facial Cleanser (I had gotten this before from a Birchbox and I thought it was ok); a deluxe 1 oz sample of Coolway Shampoo and Conditioner (in squeeze bottles not foil packs!); a full size lipstick from Nicka K New York Hydro Lipstick in this gorgeous shimmery garnet color called “Begonia”, and three La Fresh Travel Lite Antiperspirant wipes (I don’t need antiperspirant – so this isn’t very useful for me, but its definitely convenient). I love the lipstick and can’t wait to try the shampoos. So this is an all around pretty good box for the price – I think I definitely got my values worth.

  5. This was my first BB5 box and I was completely underwhelmed. I didn’t get the mask–Instead got a sample bottle of Aveeno lotion, which I could get for free, as well as the ban body cloths, which I did get as free samples. Cancelled my subscription–will stick with Pop Sugar and Saffron Rouge. I know they cost more but at least I am not paying for free samples.

    • I am extremely disappointed with BB5. I want to cancel I said I would give it a couple months. It still is a huge disappointment.

  6. I just got my first box this month, and it sucked! The only possible good things to me were the Secret Clinical Strength and the H2O Body wash in sea lotus. Also got a very glittery nail polish, and I’m not a fan of glitter (maybe for my daughter!). Some self-tanner, which is not a product I use. And that glittery toe separator, which I could have gotten at a dollar store. You’d think they’d try to impress me with my first box, but apparently not! Though I did get a 3-month subscription, so maybe they figure they’ll send me a good one as my 3rd box?

Still happy with Birchbox, both for the contents (we’ll see this month) and their point system. They were late mailing out my box this month so they gave me 100 points, which is $10!

And I get my first Saffron Rouge Inner Circle box in a few days, so we’ll see…

  7. I gave up on BB5 two months ago and haven’t regretted it at all. I was a loyal subscriber for over a year. When they changed their prices, they failed to let me know. Then I would consistently receive brands that were duplicated month after month after month …. After I canceled, they sent an email. It wasn’t “You’re a great customer. We want you back” or “We apologize for the price increase confusion. How about a month on us?”. It was just “Why”? I simply stated that Ipsy had them beat by a mile.

  8. This is my first month with Beauty Box Five. I was rather disappointed with it. I won’t use most of the items. Just the eye liner.. I may give it another month..

  9. I got the same exact box you did, plus a Bellapierre shimmer pot that I got for using a code when signing up for my subscription. I’m super happy the items, because I’ll actually use all of them. And even though I’m pretty loyal to my Benefit Bad Gal liner, I use black eyeliner every single day—so the full-size black liner in this box is a huge treat!

Definitely happy with my first BB5!

  10. I also was disappointed in his box. I recieved only small samples, nothing full size, and all the samples were worthless. I’ve thrown it all away and cancelled my subscription. Very disappointed!

  11. I decided to try them this month and got a terrible box. Some antiperspirant wipes, neutral nicka k lipstick, shampoo, conditioner and shea terra black soap.
The only thing I used was the black soap and it smells HORRID. Really hard to get out of the bottle too.
I promptly sent them an e-mail to cancel. So not impressed. I might have actually liked this box that you received!

    • I got this one too, as well as my friend

  12. Once again, Liz gets a box in the same month worth twice mine, no full size items either:-(
This is not a personalized service so why such a spread in box values in the same month?

    • I received this same box. I like the mask and the perfume is ok, but I received free Ban wipes directly from Ban, so I’m not happy that they were in this box. I also don’t need another black liner (I just got one from Ipsy and one from Sample Society). I don’t think I’ll be renewing after my sub is up next month.

  13. Beauty box 5 is usually good it’s way better then birchbox, but this month beauty box 5 was a complete mess!, but I will still keep my scription because they are one of the best out there.

  14. I love receiving masks but I never seem to use them! This box seems like a great deal and a fun one for a low budget. Thanks for sharing!

  15. I saw a while back they ran a $20 discount on an annual subscription. Do they do that often? I got the first one free (got two somehow, both different), but I’d like to sign up for an annual.

  16. My box was a bit different! Yet for my 1st box, my first impression was “WOW! I want another monthly box of beautybox5 supscription”. Good price, packaged nicely, and practical and fitting for the season, and at least 75% of the items I’m going to use. The H20 shower gel is good, I’m used to philosophy so it will take a bit of time to get used, it is a good change. I got the secret clinical strength deooderant in my box, which is the same brand I use on my busier days, great to see that because I was running out of it. I got nail polish that is good quality ( yet is to glittery for me ) so i’m swapping it, and glitter toe spacers ( cute ) yet I feel to old for glitter ……. I’m starting to think I got an April box? Does everyone get the same box or are there different ones? —-

    • They seem to like sending out that Secret Clinical Strength deodorant. I saw one in a review on this site a few months back, I got it in my limited edition box, and now they’re still sending it? It’s a high-value item but it gives me a rash! (Am not 100% recovered after three weeks of being off the stuff.)

I like H2O+ but I just made a $60+ order with them (sample box and gift set + free samples so I have like 12 H2O+ products right now!).

This one is always so tempting because of the price, and I’m certainly not above using drugstore brands, but I’ll probably hold off until there’s a good coupon code.

      • I have a lot of allergies too, I’m trying to go organic when it comes to deoderants and other beauty products, yet none of the organic deorderants I’ve tried so far seem to be okay with polyester blends and longer summer days. If you ever get the secret deorderant again, I don’t swapping for it, I get about 6 different boxes subscriptions right now.

      • Agreed! I think I am going to wait for a promo code as well before I sign up. Liz, do you know of any out there like that one they were offering a while back?
