Sample Society Review – January 2014

Sample Society Review - January 2014 Box

Sample Society is a monthly beauty and makeup sample subscription box. Their samples tend to be deluxe sized, and they almost always have a skincare product or two, so I recommend this box if you're looking to try out new (and usually expensive) skincare products, in addition to the occasional makeup product.

There are usually 7 variations or so of each month's box. For reference I got the Kit C box.(You can find the Kit letter under your order history).

Sample Society Review - January 2014 Items

The Subscription Box: Sample Society

The Cost: $15 a month

The Products: Deluxe and full-size beauty and makeup samples. (Each month you also get a $15 off $50 to use on any order containing a product from any of the brands in your box).

Check out all of my Sample Society reviews and the Beauty Subscription Box Directory!

Sample Society Review - January 2014 Card

Each box comes with a card detailing the products included and their full-size prices.

Sample Society Review - January 2014 StriVectin

Issey Miyake L'Eau d'Issey - .8ml Value $.80

StriVectin Present Perfect Lotion - .25 oz Value $8.67

What a deceptive box! I'm so used to StriVectin samples being generous enough to last me 2-3 weeks, that I was a little disappointed in this lotion sample size. I do love StriVectin products though, and this lotion is new to me - so it's still a win.

Sample Society Review - January 2014 Lip Gloss

Stila Cosmetics Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in Beso - .03 oz Value $7.33

I'm always happy to see makeup products in my Sample Society boxes, and this is a great sample - I never finish full-size lip glosses anyway!

Orlane Paris Extreme Line Reducing Lip Care - 3 ml Value $15

Sample Society Review - January 2014 Butter London

Butter London Holiday Handbag Cuticle Oil - FULL SIZE! Value $15

Verdict: I paid $15 for this box and got about $45 worth of products. I'll definitely use the cuticle oil, the lipgloss, and the StriVectin lotion, so the value is good for me, but I must admit I'm a little jealous of the subscribers who got two StriVectin products this month!

What did you get in your January Sample Society box?

Canceling my sub w/ Sample Society today. I thought after all the disappointed subscribers in December that Beauty Bar SS would have stepped it up this month. But it was actually worse. For $15 I can’t complain too much. Was excited about the Butter London Oil until I applied it. It does work very well but it smells terrible. Anyway, enough of that. Hopefully they will go back to sending out quality products. If they do I will resubscribe.

I actually love this month’s box. I got Kit D and couldn’t be happier! I got:

Butter London Horse Power Nail Fertilizer (Full Size)
StriVectin Instant Retexturizing Scrub (Deluxe Sample)
StriVectin Eye Concentrate for Wrinkles (Deluxe Sample)
Malin + Goetz Vitamin E Face Moisturizer Deluxe (Deluxe Sample)
Nicole Richie Fragrance Eau de Parfum Sample

The only thing I don’t like in this box is the perfume sample so this box is a win for me!

That’s not a lip gloss (stila),it is a fully opaque bright red liquid lipstick! I have two of that one. I love it, but it’s definitely not a gloss! 🙂

totally agree on the disappointment end–I also called to cancel today after this second lame month (clear nail polish, tiny school-marmy mauve-y lipstick, drugstore brand sample-sized eye cream and throw-away perfume samples….total value a BUST. This was one of the better boxes I subscribe to (maybe 5 or 6 total) but has been steadily deteriorating in novelty and new items…bummer

I was extremely disappointed. You can go to Macy’s and find Nicole Richie parfum on clearance. I received a sample of Fekkai’s Advanced Glossing Shampoo which I also received a week ago in my Birch Box. I am also going to cancel my subscription.

I also got the one with the Butter London Oil, plus:

*StriVectin Present Perfect
*Nicole Richie fragrance sample
*Jane Iredale lip and cheek stain
*Philosophy Hope in a Jar Moisturizer

If I end up liking the nail oil, I’ll be a little happier with it, but the rest of the samples were so tiny. I’m super tired of getting Jane Iredale every month, and so MANY Philosophy samples (I think I have four or five of Hope in a Jar samples at a minimum and it doesn’t work for me as a moisturizer at all, so it’s extra frustrating,) and I would far have preferred your box.

I got this version too. First time I’ve been disappointed in SS. Hopefully they can rebound and get some bigger samples for February.

I, too, am thinking about canceling my subscription. I was very disappointed with this box. I received the 2 Strivectin products- but I have received so many skin care products from them! I’ll have no use for the Nail Fertilizer because I never had any problem growing healthy nails. I’m going to adjust my profile and give them another month. If I get another disappointing box, I will be canceling!

Mine was almost totally different except for the Butter London oil.

*StriVectin Present Perfect
*Nicole Richie fragrance sample
*Jane Iredale lip and cheek stain (super tiny just like the Jane Iredale product I got in another box recently)
*Philosophy Hope in a Jar Moisturizer

I am soon going to have enough face creams and moisturizers to last 10 years!

Wow! Great box! After seeing this months box I’m even more wanting to try this box! It’s from Allure, they know their stuff….that’s what I say anyway. 🙂 but I’ve seen some misses from them too so who knows.

I LOVE the Present Perfect lotion! I’m 27 and it’s just the right product for those of us with younger yet soon-to-be-aging skin. It also works well with my makeup routine.
HOWEVER, I am glad I cancelled my sub this month as the Strivectin, The Issey fragrance AND the Stila lip product were all FREE SAMPLES at Ulta over the holidays. (I know.. I got them!) I’m glad the Butter London was full size and worth the price of the box making the other item like a bonus.
Does anyone else wish companies wouldn’t send items we know we can get for free from Sephora or Ulta? Especially perfume samples.
Sorry- don’t want to be a debbie downer.. just wanted you and other subscribers to know!

Felt exactly the same about this month’s box! I had high hopes for sample society but I cancelled after this one 🙁
